25.01.2022 An interesting counterpoint to one of the central objectives of a communications and public relations campaign was the recent matter involving the former Australia Post chief executive. A major communications effort was mounted which voiced her concerns at the way she had been compelled to resign her position. It was very successful in terms of enormous coverage around Australia with many lead stories on page one of major dailies. Yet, the objective of the campaign, that of s...ecuring an apology and, so we gather, reappointment to the previous position has not occurred. So, despite the success of the communications program in terms of drawing attention to the issue and getting the message out, the fundamental objective of apology and reinstatement, at the time of writing, appears not to have been achieved. Although, we believe that the matter is still very much in play.

18.01.2022 Public relations and communications has been revolutionised by the ascendancy of social media over the past ten years in particular. Individuals can now establish a profile for themselves and indeed make themselves, in many cases, international celebrities. There is, however, always a need for third-party, dispassionate, strategic advice, which is the role of the external consultant. ... At the dawn of a new year, reputation and perception management will continue to a central focus of the PR and communications mix.

12.01.2022 At the risk of focusing again on the British Royal family’s ongoing PR war with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, it is hard to avoid in terms of its prominence in media here and around the world. Meghan and Harry have by all accounts retained a very substantial communications team and they are working overtime to put the best foot forward for their eminent clients. At the same time the royal family’s PR And Communications team has certainly been proactive in responding to the issues before them in what seems to be a never ending battle.

09.01.2022 There is nothing quite like the thrill of corporate communications and financial public relations work. Some consultants would perhaps prefer to be working on a champagne account, which needless to say we would not repudiate, but we especially love a good finance or related client. Being history enthusiasts, as well, we are particularly intrigued by past events involving the stock market. ... Who could forget, for example, Poseidon during the late 1960s nickel boom in Australia. This saw the company’s share price go from around $1.10 in early 1969 to over $280 within a year. And any mention of the stock market being a casino is to be eschewed. We prefer the words of famed American financier J P Morgan who, when asked what the stock market was going to do, replied, It will fluctuate. Image, courtesy of the ABC, of nickel mining.

09.01.2022 Oratory is one of the great human skills and needless to say is a pivotal part of the communications mix. History has numerous examples of those who were persuasive and engaging in there speeches. The great orators of the past include Lincoln, who freed the slaves, Demosthenes who overcame a stutter, Nelson Mandela, and of course the great Barack Obama. Obama's appealing style, charisma and mesmeric oratory continue to resonate, some years after the end of his eight year term in the White House.
