24.01.2022 HOLIDAY BLESSINGS For the Jewish woman, candle lighting represents a unique opportunity to usher in the upcoming holiday with joy and blessing. The blessing recited when lighting the Rosh Hashanah candles is individual to the holiday, so please take the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the appropriate blessings. The first night, Friday night, combines the blessings of Rosh Hashanah with Shabbat:... ' , . Bah-rookh ah-tah ah-doh-noi eh-loh-hay-noo meh-lekh hah-oh-lahm ah-sher ki-deh-shah-noo beh-mitz-voh-tahv veh-tzee-vah-noo leh-hahd-lik nehr shehl shah-baht vih-shehl yohm hah-zi-kah-rohn. Blessed are You, L-rd, our Gd, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and has commanded us to light the candle of Shabbat and of the Day of Remembrance. ' . Bah-rookh ah-tah ah-doh-noi eh-loh-hay-noo meh-lekh hah-oh-lahm sheh-heh-kheh-yah-noo veh-kee-mah-noo ve-hih-gee-ah-noo liz-mahn hah-zeh Blessed are You, Lord our Gd, King of the universe, who has granted us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this occasion. The prohibitions of the holiday are still in effect when we light candles on the second night, so care should be taken to use a pre-existing flame, as creating a new flame by striking a match is forbidden. The candles must be lit AFTER the time printed, NOT BEFORE. On the second night of Rosh Hashanah we say the following: ' , . Bah-rookh ah-tah ah-doh-noi eh-loh-hay-noo meh-lekh hah-oh-lahm ah-sher ki-deh-shah-noo beh-mitz-voh-tahv veh-tzee-vah-noo leh-hahd-lik nehr shel yohm hah-zi-kah-rohn Blessed are You, L-rd, our Gd, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and has commanded us to light the candle of the Day of Remembrance. 20.01.2022 YOM KIPPUR IS LIKE PURIM?!? In the Torah Yom Kippur is called Yom Hakipurim, which makes it sound like it is a day like Purim. How can that be? The Talmud does tell us that there is no day more joyous than Yom Kippur and we know what a happy day Purim is, so maybe we could figure out what it all means. At the end of Yom Kippur the Shofar is sounded, one long celebratory blast of victory. We have fasted, we have prayed, we have put our past behind us and we have been libera...ted to move on with a clean slate to a bright and happy future. We have connected to our true essence, to our pure souls, a moment like this is one to celebrate. Gut Yom Tov, we exclaim to each other with renewed strength and joy. On Purim, we actually go a step further and that is why Yom Kippur is like Purim, reaching the level of Purim. On Purim, when we take the physical gifts, food and drink and we party, we are actually elevating the mundane to the holy, embracing our physical selves and lifting them up into the realm of spirituality! The holy Yom Kippur focus on the spiritual sets us up towards our goal and our purpose in life of elevating the world around us . a real good preparation for Purim! May the final blast of the Shofar at the conclusion of Yom Kippur indeed herald in Vehayah bayom hahu yitaka beshofar gadol And it shall be on that day that a great shofar will be sounded (Isaiah 27:13) Shabbat Shalom Well over the fast Erev Shabbat Parshat Ha’azinu Shabbat Shuva 7 Tishrei - September 25 Candle Lighting times in Australia: MELBOURNE - 6.01pm SYDNEY - 5.36pm Yom Kippur 9 Tishrei - September 27 Candle Lighting times in Australia: MELBOURNE - 6.03pm SYDNEY - 5.37pm

16.01.2022 ENDLESS BOUNDLESS LOVE Rosh Hashanah is a time of awe. Yom Ha-din, the outline is drawn for a New Year. What will it be? We tremble. We celebrate. Which is it: fear or joy? Women, so close to tears and prayer, come to remind us: we are in a relationship, we are in a profound relationship of unconditional love with the Master of the Universe, who cares about each one of us, like a child. It is hard to remember this; it is hard to think it on a daily basis; it is hard to ima...gine. The Master of the universe is interested in little ol' me? How could it be? The family structure teaches us about love. You are born, you are loved - a mother's love flows like water flows in a river. It is part of nature. It is a constant. It is simply there, like nature. So it is with Hashem. Hashem has an endless, boundless love for us. it is part of the natural world. On Rosh Hashanah we can gather our courage to count our blessings, reinforce our relationships that sustain us, dream of ways to improve everything, and take the time to look around and notice and trust all our relationships, especially the biggest and most important relationship of all, our personal relationship with G-d. - by Elissa Blaser, co-founder and vice-president of the Rosh Chodesh Women’s Circle Inc See more

07.01.2022 This week, ‘Connecting through Candle Lighting’ is honoured to join with ‘Unite with Light’, set on bringing as much light to the world as we can with the power of the Shabbat and holiday candles. Jewish tradition highlights Sukkot as the festival of joy. Ancient Israel had beautiful festivities, so that according to the Mishna, ‘Anyone who has not seen Simchas Bais Hashoeva (the rejoicing on Sukkot) has never seen real joy...’. As we, the Jewish women, light candles to usher... in the holy day, let’s feel the joy in the air and be totally embraced by the Divine Light of the moment, using it to propel us ever forward.
