15.01.2022 I love this article by Zen priest Edward Espe Brown. It reminds me that the best meditation practice is not governed by strict rules, shoulds and should nots. Our meditation practice is about finding what is comfortable and doable for each of us that we can integrate easily in our daily lives. That it is ok to sit cross legged on your meditation cushion focused on the breath bringing your awareness into the present moment with your freshly brewed cup of coffee in front of y...ou. I too find it difficult to meditate in the early hours of the morning prior to showering and having coffee. I often feel guilty about drinking coffee before morning mediation or yoga; thinking that I am depreciating the true essence of the practice, somehow polluting or diluting my practice with caffeine. This leads to all kinds of negative self-talk about not doing my practice justice, my guilty little secret about gulping down a cup of rich strong coffee before heading off to a yoga class worrying that everyone will notice the smell of coffee on my breath and judge me. Hating myself for rushing what I love to savour. If I dont have coffee I dont go to yoga; and thats just ridiculous! Edward Espe Brown describes the delightful ritual of incorporating the full essence of the experience of coffee into his morning meditation practice. Honouring the preparation, smell, taste and giving thanks for the awakening of body and spirit to the true taste of the dharma. While I may not go as far as bringing my coffee cup to a yoga class; Browns story has reframed my relationship with coffee and meditation from one of self-loathing to one of honouring and gratitude for something that brings great pleasure to my day. These harmful comments a...re grounded in a misunderstanding of depression, confusing it with things like sadness. This video details what depression is REALLY like so we can finally stop the stigma and get sufferers the support they need. Much love, The Depression Project

02.01.2022 Living sober might seem impossible especially in a culture like ours where alcohol consumption is so closely associated with good times and being social. Yet dig a little deeper and you will find many people who lead fulfilling social lives without drinking. If alcohol is keeping you from optimal functioning at work or impacting on your personal relationships - if you are experiencing an inner conflict about drinking and always struggling with clarity and focus - then perhaps sobriety is a serious option to consider. In this enlightening article Seizan Egyo discusses the experience of relief from making the choice to live sober.

01.01.2022 There are times when it is difficult to integrate conscious social action with the principles of meditation. To straddle the path of political activism and mind...fulness has often been a conundrum for me. Jack Kornfield writes here with such simplicity and clarity about the fundamental teachings of the Dharma which invites us to not only walk the path of inner peace but also to actively embrace the relational aspects of the Dharma in the expression of Right Intention and Right Action. "It is a misunderstanding to think that meditation and contemplation are the fulfillment of the Buddhist Path. Inner peace, freedom and joy develop only when paired with the outer teachings of virtue, respect and mutual care. The foundation of Dharma is relational, built on generosity, virtue and loving-kindness..." I hope you enjoy this short piece of insight as much as I did. See more
