22.01.2022 Why would you complete a Mental Health First Aid course?

20.01.2022 Hey you! Do you and some friends want to host a Youth Mental Health First Aid course for FREE? You could be a group of friends, family, work colleagues, sporting club members etc. The more diverse the group, the better! If you’re interested in learning more about mental health please read on I'm looking for a group of adults (18+) that are interested in hosting a Youth Mental Health First Aid at their house.... The ask... 1. Provide the venue (open plan lounge room with a TV that can connect to a laptop) 2. Find 6-10 friends that are interested in attending 3. Live in or close to Camperdown/Warrnambool Victoria 4. Purchase your own text books In return, you and your friends get to attend the course for FREE (course is valued at $300+ per person) I am trialing a new way of delivering YMHFA in homes and also need to get some courses in to keep my accreditation valid. The course can be run over 2 days or 4 shorter sessions. These sessions would need to be weekends or evenings. Due to the current climate, it is now, more than ever, important that we know how to recognise signs and symptoms of mental illness and feel confident in being able to have tough conversations - this is what you will learn in a YMHFA course! If you’re interested, please send me a message to discuss further. Course will be held December-March. Obviously dependent on Covid-19 restrictions. For more info on the course please visit https://mhfa.com.au/cms/youth-course-information See more

12.01.2022 2020 - a year we will never forget. This page has been very quiet this year - we have taken some well needed time out and welcomed our 2nd baby boy, Van Lucas, in February During this uncertain time with Covid-19 - we have all learnt many things - and I believe, one of the most fundamental things we need to continue to prioritise is our mental health.... I am on maternity leave until September 2020, from then we will return with our Youth Mental Health First Aid courses, including some exciting news of in-home sessions (more to come on that soon). We will also be running a refresher course for those needing to update their qualification before the end of the year. More soon - Stay safe everyone See more

06.01.2022 Today is R U OK Day , a national day of action that continues to be an important and influential way to raise awareness around mental health. This year’s campai...gn focusses on encouraging people to Trust the Signs that someone could be struggling with life. It’s about empowering people to feel confident enough to start a conversation. Understanding how to talk about mental health is an important skill. Many people feel uncomfortable and unprepared and this can mean the conversation never starts at all. Mental Health First Aid courses teach people the skills to feel confident about what to do next if someone says No-I’m not okay. At an MHFA course, you will learn how to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems or a crisis such as thoughts of suicide. You’ll gain the confidence to give the most effective support you can and when and how to access professional help. You’ll also learn about the sorts of treatments which have been shown by research to be the most effective, and how to access these. We agree that a conversation could change a life and we think that learning the right skills can make the difference. If you’d like to learn the skills to have that conversation on R U OK? day or any other day, visit https://mhfa.com.au/ #ruok #ruokday #trustthesigns #RUOK2019 #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness

01.01.2022 What a fantastic initiative So great to see someone addressing health literacy and ensuring rural men understand the key messages around mental health Likening mental health to bogged farm machinery - so good!

01.01.2022 And this, this is why I am so passionate about teaching MHFA to our community! I am currently in the process of organising some FREE training my way of giving back to our wonderful community. If you’d love to attend please get in touch! If you have the time, click on the link to find out a bit about Mental Health First Aid. If your colleague falls over and breaks their arm, they probably won't feel weird about asking you to help them. But if they're feeling depressed or... suicidal, they might not feel able to ask for assistance. The course teaches you to be the one who starts the conversation with someone you think might be a risk to themselves, so they don't have to be the one who reaches out.... ...What happens when they're not OK The idea of asking someone if they're feeling depressed or anxious or suicidal is intimidating. Sure, we all know from RUOK Day that we should ask people if they're OK, but what if they say no? What then? Or what if they say they are OK and you're pretty sure they're not really. The course can't teach you to spot a lie or make someone talk to you who doesn't want to, but it gives you insight into what to look for, ways around a difficult conversation, and provides you with enough knowledge to be able to tell someone what they might be able to access services in your state, how to ask about mental health with a GP, for example.
