18.01.2022 In Australia, 1 in 2 adults report feeling lonely at least once a week, with older Australians especially vulnerable. Research has shown that being lonely can i...ncrease your risk of early death by as much as 26%. One meta-analysis which looked at almost 150 studies found that individuals experiences within social relationships significantly predict mortality, and the overall effect corresponds with a 50% increase in odds of survival as a function of social relationships. This means that the risk of premature death associated with social isolation and loneliness is similar to that associated with well-known risk factors such as obesity and smoking. So, what's exercise got to do with it? Its well known that being active, especially in a group environment, is a great way to improve mood and mental health. Research is also starting to acknowledge the power of physical activity as a means to reduce individual and community isolation. Movement brings people together and can help to reduce feelings of loneliness. As part of the Exercise Right for Active Ageing program, we're offering discounted group exercise classes to Australians aged over 65. These classes are a great way for people to connect with others and get active at the same time. To learn more about the program, head to our website. #ExerciseRight

06.01.2022 Most people throughout the world are currently nervous about the potential impact of COVID-19, however, its now more important than ever to remind everyone tha...t we should still consider physical activity for two key reasons. Firstly, research does show that exercise can support our immune system, and secondly, exercise is proven to support our mental health. Some contemporary evidence shows that leading a physically active lifestyle reduces the incidence of communicable (e.g., bacterial and viral infections) and non-communicable diseases (e.g., cancer), implying that immune competency is enhanced by regular exercise bouts. Other recent research supported this fact by establishing that those who undertake strenuous exercise such as marathon runners tended to report less annual sick days. #COVID19 #ExerciseRight #staysafe
05.01.2022 Today is World Osteoporosis Day! A day dedicated to raising awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. #WorldOsteoporosisDay Did you... know that exercise can increase the strength of your bones? Exercise that is bone building (osteogenic), is very important from early childhood to early adulthood to lay down a solid foundation for bone health. As we age, we naturally lose bone due to the ageing process. Osteoporosis is most common in older women, affecting 1 in 4 women aged over 75. Thankfully, exercise has been scientifically proven to help in the treatment and management of Osteoporosis by slowing the decline or increasing bone strength. The bone remodelling process takes approximately 9-12 months to occur, which means in order to see improvements in bone strength, exercise should be maintained. Get expert advice individualised to you from your local Accredited Exercise Physiologist - find one near you: essa.org.au/find-aep Read more about exercise and osteoporosis on our blog: https://exerciseright.com.au/increasing-bone-strength-exer/ #ExerciseRight

01.01.2022 Ever find that listening to music makes your workout easier? Well, there's science to back that up! A new meta-analysis has found that listening to music can be...nefit your workout in more ways than one... 1. Music puts you in a better mood as part of a dissociative strategy. It helps to distract you from the task at hand and make you feel more positive about your workout. 2. Music boosts your performance (yes, really!). Music has an ergogenic effect that increases output during repetitive, rhythmic aerobic exercise by synchronizing body movements to the tempo of an upbeat song. 3. Music helps with your motivation and can actually make that HIIT session feel a bit less challenging! 4. Music improves your efficiency during exercise by increasing blood flow and reducing the amount of oxygen intake required to perform at the same intensity without music. Thinking of heading out for a workout? Don't forget to take your favourite playlist with you! #ExerciseRight
01.01.2022 Being active is one of the best things you can do for your mental health. In fact, just one hour of exercise per week has been shown to have a protective effect against depression. #ExerciseRight
