This creates a vicious cycle as altered breathing patterns contribute to neck pain. In a 2014 study, 36 people with chronic neck pain were given three 30-minute sessions of breathing re-education. After the treatment, pain intensity and muscle activity were significantly less, and the range of movement in the neck and expansion of the chest and lower rib cage were much greater. The trial concluded that breathing re-education can change breathing patterns and improve neck pain symptoms.
