11.01.2022 Reclink Community Hustle - The Launch I’ve never played formalised Basketball before says Chyla Pfeiffer, the Glenora District High School Point Guard with smooth handles and a hunger to drive into the lane, create contact, and put the ball in the hole. This is what the Reclink Community Hustle in conjunction with Basketball Tasmania - sets out to achieve. A 3 on 3 basketball tournament for schools in the northern suburbs who are faced with a wealth of challenges and bar...riers to the pathways of sport. For Chyla and the Glenora High School, it is the geographical challenge of being a regional hub of farmland and good folk. And whilst there are sporting clubs based out of New Norfolk, they sadly don’t have the funding to run coaching clinics, with an eye towards talent identification, to ensure naturally talented kids like Chyla aren’t restricted to pick-up/social games in the school yard. This tournament aims to identify talent like Chyla’s and provide a vehicle to the strong social environments of sporting clubs. Sure, pathways to elite level sport is important; who doesn’t want to play pro-sports!? But the pathway to strong social standards/behaviours, role-models, mentors, and the depth of industry involvement that a group of adults/leaders bring for employment opportunities is often life changing when it comes to disengaged and regional students. I have always loved sport. I surprised myself today. I’ve only played against the boys in the school yard so it was cool to have the ball in my hands. If the chance came to pursue Basketball at club level, I would definitely want to be involved Congratulations Chyla Pfeiffer on being the Reclink Community Hustle’s inaugural Player of the Week.
10.01.2022 Reclink Community Hustle - Story of the week: Zak Maynard Zak describes that he feels like he had been in trouble at school since Year 1. He had had a difficult time finding himself when he moved from Primary School to High School. Two years ago, it seemed like an almost daily occurrence, in the memory of Cosgrove High School Assistant Principal, David Bryant, that he would walk an angry Zak back to his office to support him to meet the school’s expectations; The Cosgrove ...Way a system that has worked magic on the behavioural standards of many current students, and Zak. This year the Reclink Community Hustle - in conjunction with Basketball Tasmania - has seen first-hand Zak’s improvement in his approach towards working with others. If you saw Zak take the court in the current 3v3 Reclink Community Hustle, there is no way you’d recognise him from years gone past. This is a similar story for many other young people involved in the program. Basketball, sportsmanship and remaining humble is the priority now. There are a multitude of reasons for this dramatic and positive transformation. Young people develop at different speeds. But anyone involved in the development of Zak Maynard, the person, knows that this kind and humble iteration of the man is formed by the involvement of a sporting club. Zak, and the leaders of the school, are adamant that without the involvement of the Glenorchy District Football Club 'RSEA Magpies', and the guidance of its senior leaders as mentors, Zak would not have found himself as a footballer, and in turn, the balance to be a calm student who supports his school through his leadership. Zak is also surrounded by a very supportive family who are also very proud of his achievements. What Zak has done is incredible. Engagement with sport as a genuine pathway to increase responsibility and improve life outcomes? Perfect. Congratulations Zak on being the Reclink Community Hustle Player of the Week!!

08.01.2022 Reclink Community Hustle - in conjunction with Basketball Tasmania 12 seconds left on the clock. Game tied. The Cosgrove High School no.1 team had held a strong lead, but a late flurry of points from Glenora District High School using a frenetic offensive scheme called Mess- had them surging for 6 straight points.... Having grabbed the defensive rebound, Glenora Guard, Kane Lovell, immediately exited his defensive half. Now eyeing his offensive basket, with 6 seconds on the clock, he pulled a hesitation dribble sending his defender hard right, allowing him access to the left corner. He took the open space, pushed hard to the left and dribbled his way into what would have felt to be an open mid-range jump shot for the win. The defender, having found his footing, was closing hard into the mid-range space. Lovell, with the awareness and poise of a 15 year NBA veteran, identified the hard closing defender and stepped back to the three point arc to drain a high arcing buzzer beater. 15 12.. Glenora WIN!! If it wasn’t for my team-mates telling me to take the last shot, I don’t think I would have had the confidence to do it said Kane, continuing on with his 15 year veteran act. 15-year-old kids aren’t meant to respond like this when asked about a made buzzer beater that had the entire stadium celebrating yes even the opposition. They’re meant to bash their chest, talk smack, tell the world via Facebook how good they are. Tik Tok, Snapchat, Insta. It’s all about the likes. The attention. Not Kane Lovell. Not Chyla Pfeiffer either. These Glenora kids are from different stock. They’re grounded. Humble. And whilst Kane is already a member of a sports club, playing the all-rounder role for the Glenorchy Cricket CTPL U/17’s, he hasn’t given away hope of one day playing for the local basketball club. Having spent time with the Glenorchy Cricket Club, and experiencing the positive social environment on offer, I would definitely welcome the opportunity to broaden my social network and experiences to the Basketball scene too. Congratulations to Kane Lovell for being the Reclink Community Hustle Player of the Week. *Kane is pictured here with the game ball and Female Player of the Week - Danni Cordwell from Cosgrove High School.
