21.01.2022 Life gave me lemons! (My neighbour Gavin gave me lemons) He asked me how many Id use, and I said as many as I was given...and he gave me two buckets worth.... Big buckets. And these are no ordinary lemons... They are supersized lemons! (Swipe to see the third pic for size compared to my hand ) I do use a lot of lemons just in my everyday cooking, but clearly this needs some extra effort. So Ive made two big jars of preserved lemons (well they are not preserved *yet* but they are on their way... Its basically lemons, salt, extra lemon juice snd time. Ill post the recipe once theyre done and I can show you the finished product). Next Im making a big batch of lemon peel chutney (recipe from a friend so no idea what its like, yet). The zested lemons are sitting in the fridge whilst I think about using them up to make lemon curd (or lemon butter as they call it in Australia). Havent made that in years. I might also juice sone and freeze in my icecube tray, I find it useful to have a few cubes of lemon juice in the freezer And then I saw another recipe for a lemon pickle that looks great, but Im all outta whole lemons! So Ive actually put in a request for a few more... See more

19.01.2022 Kitchen 'sponges'. I use old cotton face towels, cut up into quarters. I don't even sew them. They will fray at first and then I cut the frayed bits off. To dis...infect and keep them looking fresh, I dye them once in a while by soaking in hot water with turmeric and bicarb soda. After an hour, I add a few tablespoons of vinegar and they bubble up. I soak again for half an hour then rinse with soap. They last for years and when it's time to replace one, I'll chuck it in the compost bin. Good for your pocket, good for the environment See more

19.01.2022 Shared by Michael Shawn Fletcher: "Indigenous Plant Use" by Barkandji woman Zena Cumpston from the School of Ecosystem and Forest Sciences. It is for families, ...schools, community groups. Download it and get out in your garden today! Such a powerful statement about the depth of knowledge in the Kulin Nations. Indigenous plant use In 2019, the University of Melbourne was transformed by the breathtaking influx of 40,000 Kulin Nation plants as part of the Indigenous-led event, The Living Pavilion. These plants were accompanied by signs, carefully researched and curated by Barkandji woman Zena Cumpston, which articulated the plants from an Aboriginal perspective and explored their cultural, nutritional, technological and medicinal use. The plant research was so popular that many participants contacted Zena wanting to access the information. The new Indigenous plant use booklet was created so people could continue learning. In the booklet, youll find information on more than 50 indigenous plant species displayed on labels that you can print and use in your own garden. https://nespurban.edu.au//2020/08/Indigenous-plant-use.pdf

16.01.2022 Happy Earth Day! Today I’d like to share 5 of my top tips for living more sustainably. Plus a little peek into life at my newly created urban homestead! 1. Grow... some of your own food! Growing our own food is a revolutionary act in today’s society. Food can be growing freely and abundantly all around us. Start small. This pumpkin grew out of my compost. I didn’t even plant it! 2. Ride a bicycle, walk and use public transport! This is my new bicycle, built out of almost all second hand materials. Life is good on a bike! 3. Compost! By composting we can turn food scraps, leaves, paper and other items into nutritious soil, rather than trash. The problem is the solution! Here at my homestead I compost for 15+ people in my neighborhood too. 4. Buy unpackaged and whole foods! Find a store near you where you can purchase unpackaged foods. Strive to ditch the processed foods and eat healthy, whole foods. This is the dry goods shelf in my kitchen. Almost everything here came without a packaging and created no trash. 5. Strive to be Low Waste! It’s unlikely any of us will achieve Zero Waste, but we can all do more. One simple way is to ditch the disposable paper towels and napkins and use reusable towels instead. Check what is in your garbage can and find reusable alternatives! See the comments where I've posted photos for tips 2-5! Start with one change at a time until you become the change you wish to see in the world! Love, Rob

13.01.2022 Last month we reported to you the concerning development that many food and drink outlets were refusing to accept their customers BYO cups. Cafes mistakenly th...ought BYO cups were less safe, taking their advice from the Restaurant & Catering Associations Guide (under COVID restrictions) to refuse Keep Cups. The Association has over 45,000 restaurant and cafe members in Australia. We got quite a reaction to our email from Boomerang Alliance supporters annoyed that this was happening and giving us their stories and experiences. We have been working hard to turn the situation around. Today we have good news! After our lobbying, the Restaurant and Catering Association are changing their guide to allow BYO cups, as long as they are clean (cafes cant wash them) and they follow the contactless pour procedures, we have been advocating Plastic Free July #plasticfree Australian Marine Conservation Society BeachPatrol3934 Clean Up Australia Cooks River Alliance Environment Victoria Good For The Hood Take 3 Tangaroa Blue

10.01.2022 This is my sons school pants. Ripped in the knee 3 times. Now imagine if I threw these away and bought 3 more new pairs just because of one hole. My son is hard on his pants because he plays hard. I dont think hes owned a pair of pants he hasnt ripped in the knees. I cant imagine buying new pairs every time he gets a hole. ... Visible mending is his best friend and thankfully we generally have a needle, thread and old jeans lying around to use as a patch. So next time you have a rip have a think if its worth repairing or maybe upcycling. But please think before buying a new pair or consider 2nd hand #VisibleMending #Sashiko #Refuse #Reduce #Reuse #NoPlanetB #RethinkYourActions

05.01.2022 18.47hrs Sunday evening - only me and my daughter home as my darling has headed north to work away for a week. Nothing really special planned for dinner and the... young un is in her cave studying for a driving theory test in the morning. She just let me know she was keen to have some salad so - it doesnt get any fresher than this on a Sunday night close to 7pm (and I managed to catch one of those pesky varmints who have been nibbling the leaves in the light of my phone as I was harvesting...) This was all I needed, no waste, no packaging, no trip to shops and distancing... The plants will re-grow pretty quickly so Ill get further harvest from them too. 04.01.2022 PLEASE SHARE THIS POST Who would have thought a wet wipe could endanger a birds life! This male Australasian darter has had his beak caught up with a wet wipe... for several weeks. The poor bird was spending all his time trying to rub the annoying material off his beak. By today he was unable to open his beak at all it was a few mm open and he could drink a little but had no chance of catching food. Various WASR volunteers have tried all this time to find the bird and rescue him. Today the magic happened and with the help of one of our net launchers (thanks to everyone who has donated money to these lifesavers) volunteers Brett and Halina managed to catch the bird. We removed the wipe but decided to take him into care for a few days as starving birds can get very sick with gut stasis, so our volunteer Karen is going to rehydrate him and make sure he is in good condition for release. A huge thanks to the City of Cockburn staff who have been looking out for this bird and telling us every time they saw him. Thanks also to Michelle who lives nearby and has been looking out for the fella, she was delighted to watch the successful rescue and take some photos for us. #darters #anhinga #birdrescue #waterbirdrescue #netgun

02.01.2022 How much plastic is there in a pair of stretch jeans? This much! I have been using my composting systems to experiment with some of the things that we ultimate...ly contribute to the waste stream. This pair of stretch jeans would usually have been repurposed but I sacrificed them to the compost bin just to see how much of the fabric was cotton and how much was plastic. We now know that most plastics do not break down. Our disposal options are to burn them and release toxic fumes or to not burn them and have them persist in our environment, possibly forever, as micro plastic particles. These micro plastics are now turning up in the bodies of animals, including us. Their long term consequences are unknown. Our best option is to take good care of the clothing we already have and to refuse to add anything to our wardrobe until we actually need to replace something.
