14.01.2022 How do you feel about working in an insecure job? Does it give you a sense of freedom, or make you stressed? The latest research shows insecure work can affect our emotional stability, and make us less conscientious. The good news is that we can do something about it - by becoming more self-aware, actively managing our career and building a supportive network, we can reduce the impact on our long-term wellbeing. #postgradlife #employability #wellbeingatwork

11.01.2022 This article argues persuasively that the Government's recent push to keep older Australians working misses the mark. As it explains, Australians often retire because they're dissatisfied with their job or working conditions, and because they feel tired. My perspective is that if those who feel ready to retire were encouraged to do so, it would free up jobs in the labour market for recent graduates, who often struggle to find ongoing, full-time employment. This would allow younger workers to carry the tax burden, and allow older people to enjoy their retirement. What do you think? https://theconversation.com/theres-a-yawning-gap-in-the-pla

06.01.2022 These are the charts I've been waiting for. I suspected those in higher-skilled occupations would be less affected by the economic impacts of Covid-19. The Grattan Institute predicts that the unemployment rate will rise substantially in Australia, but that workers in the professional industries will be least affected (see chart 2). In addition, those in higher income occupations are less likely to lose their jobs (see chart 3). So whilst this is a very challenging time for many of us, this might provide some reassurance to those lucky enough to be in high-skilled, high-paid work. https://theconversation.com/the-charts-that-show-coronaviru

03.01.2022 Good news! The Victorian Government has passed 'wage theft' laws, which means that employers can no longer withhold wages, superannuation or other entitlements from their employees. A national law will likely follow. This will protect international students in particular, who tend to be at higher risk of wage theft. https://www.sbs.com.au//landmark-victorian-legislation-mak
