24.01.2022 We have an expectation that we will be able to start meeting again on July 25th. We will need to maintain physical distancing and will be asking that everybody bring correct change and work with as we find our way through this.

24.01.2022 Quick trim for my Lillypilly.

23.01.2022 A reminder of tomorrows meeting. Don't forget the opportunity to bring a tree for the display table.

23.01.2022 We are very close to maximum capacity for tomorrows meeting (with the social distancing rules in place). Members have been polled via email regarding attendance and our mailing list. If anybody is intending to attend and has not been part of that can you let us know so we can confirm that we can fit you in. As per a previous notice we are not going ahead with the Learners group this month as trying to achieve that with the social distancing rules for the venue was not lookin...g viable. Please be patient with us as we try and navigate our way through getting in person activities happening again without putting members at risk (and along with not putting our access to the facilities at risk). There was a post put up last week with some detail on measures being taken to let us operate which is worth a read/reread before attending (bringing correct change, a pen, any food you may want to eat etc).

22.01.2022 I was going to repot this Chinese Elm at the last meeting that we had to cancel. I couldn’t wait much longer so did it on the Sunday. Two weeks later and it’s getting all it’s new leaves. Love spring

21.01.2022 How cute is this little Tokonoma. I want one.

20.01.2022 The fruit on my Ficus Benjamina 'Baby Ben' have ripened further to a nice bright red. This is about as good as its going to get. I'd be short ods to win people's choice in a show with this one right now.

18.01.2022 Very nice Shohin display

17.01.2022 We had our first meeting in a few months today and the first with social distancing measures in place. I think we had a full house in terms of the number of people allowed in the venue. Geoff St lead off with a discussion of his bonsai interests and photos of the journey some of his trees have taken. Our president Karen followed on with her experiences as someone who has been doing bonsai for a shorter period than some and some ideas of making a start without spending too... much (particularly useful for those learning to keep trees alive). Ross took over after a break for a cuppa with a talk covering some things most of us probably didn't know on the way plants function, fertilisation etc. Steve closed the afternoon out with a discussion on his magnificent Baby Ben Ficus which is currently covered in dark red fruit and critiques of a few trees (lots on display today). Thanks to everybody for your cooperation as we navigated our first in person meeting with social distancing. That all seemed to go well. I expect those measures will need to stay in place for some time. It was great to meet some new members and visitors.

17.01.2022 The AGM and a multi-demonstrator demonstration by Geoff Sm, Geoff St and Steve

10.01.2022 A couple of upcoming events from outside our club which I'd like to share for those they may be of interest to. The Australian Plants as Bonsai Symposium is on in Canberra on the Weekend 29th February-1March. Details at http://www.cbs.org.au/index.php ... This is as far as I'm aware the premier annual event in Australia for Australian Plants as bonsai. A topic which our club is deeply committed to and put a lot of focus on. A little closer to home Bonsai Horizons III is on at Calamvale on the weekend 21st-22nd March (a little less travel than Canberra). The flyer does not copy and paste well sorry. The Bonsai Society of Queensland invites you to BONSAI HORIZONS III Sharing bonsai knowledge and friendship 21st 22nd March, 2020 Where: Top floor of the Calamvale Hotel 678 Compton Rd, Calamvale Full weekend registration: $125 early bird payment before or on 31st January $140 after 31st January. Single day registration: $75 anytime up to 11th March 2020. Prices include lunch & morning tea. Registration closes on 11th March 2020. Demonstrations and workshops by bonsai artists Sam Thompson and Shane Boyce, with a range of other artists providing tutorials throughout the weekend. The weekend will give you an opportunity to relax, listen and interact with a range of bonsai artists. You will have plenty of time to work on your own trees, either by yourself or with the help of an expert tutor. There will be dinners on the Friday and Saturday nights so that you can socialise and share some stories. Accommodation is available at the venue, so you can have a bonsai getaway weekend. Call the Calamvale Hotel on 3273 4777 or book through your favourite accommodation website. Go to www.bonsaisocietyqld.asn.au for more details.

09.01.2022 I've created a new Facebook group for members of the society. https://www.facebook.com/groups/453315998661950/ If you follow the link and you are a current member of the society then click the ask to join button. If the admin's don't know you by your Facebook name we may need to ask who you are. It's a private group as the intent is to help communication within the society, we will use this page for our public profile.... A great place to ask questions, post pictures of a tree (or trees) that you have been doing some work on, show off a tree that's looking especially good right now or link material from elsewhere which you think might be useful to others. We are going to try to keep it focused on bonsai and especially bonsai things that are relevant to society members (based on other groups I'm in that may mean some removal of posts if things stray too far). All the usual bit's about community, try to keep posts and comments respectful and civil. Keep them on topic.

08.01.2022 I was going to repot this Chinese Elm at the last meeting that we had to cancel. I couldnt wait much longer so did it on the Sunday. Two weeks later and its getting all its new leaves. Love spring

08.01.2022 Hi Members, Venue change for our Jan 23rd meeting. Now at Thornside Community Hall. 200 Mooroondu Rd, Thornside. Sorry for the inconvenience

08.01.2022 We have decided to cancel the March meeting due to current Covid-19(Corona Virus) situation. We are at this stage going to take the longer term decisions as a month by month call. Our apologies for any disappointment that causes. Members should have received an email already. Members are reminded of the Society members Only Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/453315998661950 (and if you are not currently a financial member it's not very expensive to become one). ... We would love to see what you are getting up to with your trees, we should have some weeks left of good growing weather and some of us may be finding ourselves with some more "at home time" as public events and gatherings take a break.

08.01.2022 Unfortunately due to a fresh Covid outbreak in Queensland and new group size restrictions introduced today we are cancelling today's meeting. Sorry about the late notice but we only just found out about the restrictions. We will address future meeting options as more is known.

07.01.2022 We've decided this month to change the club logo. Our old logo like 95% of the worldwide bonsai community depicted a Black Pine. With an ever growing interest ...in Australia native trees it was time for our club to adopt a symbol of our identity which says more about what most of us are interested in. The tree in the logo is clearly a broadleaf tree rather than conifer and is a good stylistic match with any number of our smaller leafed natives. It is very like many of the local Melaleucas we see in the natural world around us, which we use for bonsai in our club. See more

07.01.2022 This isn't one of our activities but it may be of interest to those wanting to learn about bonsai. https://fb.me/e/3u4o7xCt3 I'm a great fan of clubs and in person workshops so don't treat this as an alternative, rather an extra.

07.01.2022 Check out these gorgeous trees from Spain. The Ginkgo Biloba in the video is a rare female tree. The females dont have a split in their leaves.

05.01.2022 What a great effort. Go Rockhampton group.

05.01.2022 A great opportunity to get a little supported quality time with a couple of trees needing a little work.

03.01.2022 SEPTEMBER 26th MEETING We are going to temporarily move our next meeting to the Wynnum Municipal Hall on the corner of Bay Terrace and Cedar Street. Please be there to be seated by 12.45 for a 1pm start for Keith Stanley's presentation. Parking in carpark at rear or on the street. We'll also be asking everyone to bring the correct change for admission and raffle tickets. $2 admission and $2 for a raffle ticket. Otherwise 3 raffle tickets for $5. No change will be given. We w...ill have hand sanitiser available on the front desk, please use it on entry, and before leaving, as well as a couple of times during the afternoon. Please bring your own pen to sign yourself in, and also to fill out the register with name, email address and phone number. It's important to maintain social/physical distancing during the entire afternoon, and please, stay home if you have any symptoms, or if you've been in contact with anyone who has. Masks can be worn by anyone who feels they may be at risk. Chairs will be placed at the correct distance from each other, and make sure to keep the same chair for the entire meeting. Afternoon tea will be served in disposable cups and there'll be prepacked biscuits for snacks. Two of our committee members will pour the drinks and prepare the snacks. No one else to enter the kitchen area please. Please bring a display tree or two to show us what you've been working on. If you can write a small tag to identify the species of the tree that would be a great help to our beginners. See more

03.01.2022 My Camelia is flowering. I know I should have cut all the buds off to push the energy back into the tree, but hey the heart wants what the heart wants.

03.01.2022 Our first meeting for 2021 was a great success with the learners group before a demo by Albert Garcia from Bimer. Great turnout and enjoyable afternoon.

02.01.2022 For our September meeting we were at the Wynnum Municipal Hall. Keith Stanley provided a great coverage of aspects of the display of trees and the thought processes which should go into that.

01.01.2022 I often suggest that if you want to grow a smaller bonsai why not start with one with naturally small leaves. This is certainly true of the Ficus species and va...rieties where there are plenty to choose from. This is a sample from my bonsai garden this morning. Given the plasticity of naming and identification I'd be happy to be corrected on my classification. Top row from the left; microcarpa, obliqua, natalensis. Second row: microcarpa retusa (called retusa but most likely a microcarpa variant?), microcarpa 'Tiger Bark', microcarpa 'Green Island', microcarpa var crassifolia. Third row; benjamina, benjamina 'Baby Ben', rubiginosa 'Little Ruby' and neriifolia. These are just 'un-reduced' regular leaves. So much more is certainly possible with intensive cultivation on all of these but starting with small leaves makes for an easier experience and more convincing illusion. See more

01.01.2022 Ha ha. Been there done that.

01.01.2022 We have added a presence on Instagram. Initially that's going to be some of the same content which is already shared on this page with the intent of reaching a different audience. If you are on Instagram search for redlandsbonsai and hit that follow button. For a look using your web browser (although it appears that you need an instagram account to get there) ... https://www.instagram.com/redlandsbonsai/ See more
