21.01.2022 Hi! I'm Alex! When we started to design the ROF Journey a few years ago, we realised that each ROF member started their sustainability journey for different reasons. Here is mine. ... I started my Journey from a waste perspective. Food waste in particular. When I was living in Shanghai, China, I was confronted by the amount of food waste that was thrown away daily at the household level as well as at the restaurant level. I just couldn't get over it and couldn't get over the fact there was no composting taking place either. I knew there had to be a solution for it. I started joining social enterprise meetings and networking with like-minded people. Soon I was put in contact with a manufacturer of home composting devices, who suggested I pilot their latest model. This is how my sustainability journey began and the rest is history =) Today I live a zero-waste lifestyle (almost! nobody is perfect and run ROF to support individuals, reduce waste and live a more sustainable lifestyle. 21.01.2022 Are you ready for STEP 1? As an Explorer in the ROF Journey, you might have come across the 5Rs of zero-waste: Refuse - Reduce - Reuse - Recycle - Rot! ... There are a few versions of it but the idea is the same! Start with REFUSING! Before going to get all your sustainable biodegradable goodies, refusing single-use items. Single-use is everywhere: takeaway cups, water bottles, plastic bags, cleaning wipes, make-up pads, Tampax (yeah, sexy I know), tea bags, snacks, chewing gums, kleenex, travel sizes products, Christmas and birthday decorations. Its convenient: Use it. Discard it. But single-use it just trash, really. Every minute, there are 1 million plastic bags that are used and wasted in the world. In average, we get a new plastic bag every 3 days, use it for 12 minutes and throw it away. And it takes up to 10.0000 years to be disintegrated. Another big one to consider is plastic bottles. In Australia alone, plastic bottles count for 118,000 tonnes of plastic/year. Thats 2.36 million kangaroos in weight. Did you know that worldwide, we manufacture half a trillion trash cups per year? This means there are 70 disposable cups for every person on the planet. That means every single person on the planet can use 1 new cup every 5 days. BUT PLASTIC DOESNT GO AWAY Since the 60s, 8.3 billion metric tons have been produced Only 9% of this has been recycled: 6.3 billion metric tons have become plastic waste. Cant even figure out these numbers. Just remember that of all the plastic generated only 9% is recycled. Of the trashed plastic, 7 million tons end up in the sea each year. 270,000 tonnes float on the surface. Getting dizzy with the numbers? Us too. The solution to single-use it easy. JUST BRING YOUR OWN. Here some homework. For the next month, try to SYSTEMATICALLY 1. Refuse plastic bag 2. Refuse trash cup 3. Refuse plastic straw 4. Refuse plastic bottle 5. Refuse plastic toothbrush Simple yet effective. Starting with refusing single-use items will make you plastic everywhere. And find alternatives to it! See more
20.01.2022 Hi! I am Sandesh Rajana As a kid who grew up in India for almost twenty-two years of his life, I witnessed one major problem that still isnt shown enough concern till date: PLASTIC WASTE! According to the Central Pollution Control Board of India, between 2010-12, India generated an estimated 9.3 million tonnes of plastic annually. In a recent study by Down to Earth organisation, India generated an estimate of 16.5 million tonnes, about 1.6 million truck fulls, of plas...tic annually in 2017-18 alone. Phew, let that sink in! I thought that zero usage of plastic was a long shot but now, I think I have made some progress. My shopping habits have changed. I guess I have become more conscious of how my consumerism is going to affect not just the community I live in, but also the planet. (We all got to start somewhere)! One thing that pushes me to live a sustainable lifestyle is that I havent felt more confident about my choices and values in life before. I feel like Im more in control of my choices and behaviour. I understand the importance of protecting our ecosystem because I am experiencing the changes first-hand. I am no scholar at sustainable lifestyle but I am learning and trying to make a difference. To succeed in your mission, you must have single-minded devotion to your goal. - APJ Abdul Kalam (The 11th President of India). See more
19.01.2022 Hi! I'm Ruth Here is my sustainability journey. Ive always been very aware of the impact we have on our planet and was taught about it at school. I started to be concerned about it and wanted to do more for Earth. ... My passion towards sustainability grew even more when I became vegetarian and then vegan. It all started with the realization of the huge impact meat and dairy industry has on our planet. I started to also change my shopping habits such as buying more bulk food and trying to make my own plant milks and nut butters. It wasnt easy, and nowadays I am still improving, step by step. But the one thing that really pushes me to continue having a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle is that Ive never felt such a strong alignment with my values and my actions. This is what truly makes me happy, thinking that I am doing my best to reduce my footprint. I then became more interested in minimalism and started to really think about what I wanted to buy, if I really needed it or not or if I was fulfilled with it or not. But there is always room for improvement! I am very glad to be able to help, inspire people to have a more sustainable lifestyle and collaborating with ROF allows its team and I to do so See more

16.01.2022 Hi! I'm Fran, Here is my sustainability journey. First, I lived minimalistic out of necessity.... My mum is that kind of Berlin post-war generation that cuts the mould off the bread and serves it for dinner. I don't feel I missed out on anything and was well set up for low-budget times in my life. It is heart-breaking to learn that 1 in 5 shopping bags of food (and money) end up in landfill where it produces a gas with more than 20 times the global warming capacity of carbon dioxide, not to mention the waste of resources (e.g. 2000l for 1kg of avocado). I don't eat mouldy bread anymore, but I give it to my chickens or worms. I share left-over recipes with friends and organise my fridge by best-before-dates. Stepping into the cycle of life like that (food > chicken > compost > veggie patch > food) taught me much about ever-changing nature. It gives me tranquillity in these speedy times. See more

13.01.2022 Has anybody else almost missed the date today? We are already in July! Today is the 1st day of the 10th #PlasticFreeJuly Challenge! If you havent heard of it yet, the idea is to cut on (all) plastic waste for a month. This is a personal challenge and, for all of us interested in sustainability, a chance to do a little bin audit and realise how much plastic waste we produce...... and avoid it by: - Refusing single-use (just BYO) - Reducing packaging (by buying bulk), - Switching everyday plastic items to sustainable alternatives (like toothbrushes, sponges, earbuds)... There are many ways to cut on plastic and stop ditching trash to the oceans. In our first two steps of the ROF Journey, we take you through different alternatives, keeping in mind our motto "Minimum effort for maximum impact". To take the challenge and stay motivated throughout the month, follow @plasticfreejuly. We also decided to take the challenge ourselves! See more

09.01.2022 Be safe, wear a condom mask From 11.59 pm on Wednesday, masks become mandatory in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire for anyone aged over 12 years. Thats the law. And for the planet? ... Please consider getting a reusable mask instead of disposables. Here some Australian accounts to get yours! karmicwitch, Mihotchstitch, Suki McMaster to name a few. How to use your cloth mask? - Wash your hands before putting on your face covering - Put it over your nose and mouth and secure it under your chin - Carefully take it off when youre home - Handle only by the ear loops or ties - Fold outside corners together and place the mask in the washing machine See more
09.01.2022 Step 5 of the ROF Journey is the last step of The Zero-Waster. Before we move on to Level 3, The Conscious Consumer, well talk about low-waste parenting. On the online class, youll find tons of resource to buy second-hand proms, furniture and clothes as well as addresses to join toy libraries, and ideas to replace food pouches or create low-waste activities for your kids. But, if you were to change only ONE thing in your parenting, REFUSE DISPOSABLE NAPPIES AND WIPES...! It would yield the biggest positive environmental impact! Did you know that 2 billion disposable nappies go into landfill every year in Australia? It takes approx. 500 years for one nappy to break down. 500 years, thats basically forever... Disposable nappies represent almost 10% of Australias total disposable waste that piles up in landfill. And while it stays there, it releases methane gas that is 21 times more harmful than carbon dioxide. Instead of 3,800 disposable nappies/year/baby, invest in 24 cloth nappies and save up to $4,000 over 2,5 years! Not sure where to start with cloth nappies? Two simple suggestions to get started: 1. Contact a local cloth nappy library to try whats best for you and your baby: Precious Little Me, Cloth Nappy Hire Australia Nappy Lane - Modern Cloth Nappies 2. Use a specific cleaning service like Botanic Baby Nappy Wash Service, Lavenderia NappyCare and Laundry Service See more
