25.01.2022 Special congratulations to Rev John Jegasothy for receiving the Highly Commended Award for Human Rights at the Premier's Harmony Dinner last night. "Since arriving in Australia, he has worked tirelessly to promote the welfare of people seeking asylum and refugees, especially those from the Tamil ethnic group fleeing the violence of war. He is also deeply involved in promoting cross cultural relationships and multiculturalism in Australia. Rev Dr Jegasothy has been a lifetime advocate for human rights. He says his greatest achievement is seeing the people he has been working with settling down." Congratulations to all recipients of the Premier's Harmony awards, who are listed here: https://multicultural.nsw.gov.au//premiers_m/2019-winners/

18.01.2022 Last week, RTRP had the absolute pleasure to attend the 20th Australasian Conference on Traumatic Stress (ACOTS), hearing the amazing research being conducted on traumatic stress across the globe, as well as presenting the work that we have been doing with individuals from refugee backgrounds. There were many great talks encapsulating the conference's theme: how there may be different pathways to recovery from trauma, and that one can grow as an individual from their experiences. A special congratulations to RTRP members, Joel Hoffman and Philippa Specker, for receiving first and second prizes in the Australasian Society for Traumatic Stress Studies - ASTSS Research Awards, respectively. The award recognises academic excellence and innovation in traumatic stress research!

A large percentage of these populations suffer from severe traumatizations due to their horrifying experiences. Hear from Professor Frank Neuner about how Narrative Exposure Therapy, the treatment he developed, can contribute to the treatment and integration of displaced persons. Register to attend the event for free.

12.01.2022 On Wednesday, in collaboration with the UNSW Grand Challenges, we had the pleasure of having Professor Frank Neuner shed light on the importance of understanding and addressing mental health issues in refugees. His treatment approach, Narrative Exposure Therapy, has become a gold standard treatment intervention for survivors of war, torture and natural disasters, and uses storytelling to help survivors process the challenges they have faced. As raised during the talk: We need to give the traumatic event a time and place in their [the individual’s] autobiography...to give the individual a voice.
