24.01.2022 During my earlier days in the gym i believed that increasing my weights every session was the only way to progress This is obviously flawed logic as eventually you can no longer continue to go heavier and i was in no place to be lifting some of the weights i was using. My form was sloppy and resulted in carrying many injuries over the years.... These days i train far differently. Quality plays a large part in my progression as well as remaining relatively injury free. Although progressive overload is something you want to strive for, it’s not always just adding more weight (higher intensity). Other ways you can look to progress are: The quality of your movements - Improvements in technique and form result in exercises becoming more comfortable. Higher volume - Increasing your sets and reps. Learning more advanced movements - Incorporating free weights into your training program when you’ve only ever been using the machines. Level of intensity becomes easier - Rate of perceived exertion (RPE) decreases. Lets say you bench press 100kg one week and it feels really heavy (RPE 9), then you bench the same weight the following week but its feels easier (RPE 8). Consistency - Stronger adherence to your workout schedule or nutrition program. Mindset - Exercising and eating healthier foods becomes less of a chore and part of your lifestyle. The above mainly addresses progress in the gym but the principle also applies to the results you might be overlooking. You think that because you don’t have a huge transformation photo that you haven’t progressed but you’re now able to fit into old clothes and you naturally make healthier food choices day to day. Although you always want to aim for progression, remember that progression comes in many forms. See more

22.01.2022 Who else licks the peanut butter off the spoon (or the knife ) when they’re cooking This might seem innocent enough (maybe not the licking the knife part) but those extra calories do count and they do add up. A tablespoon of peanut butter is around 90 calories. You might not eat an entire tablespoon of peanut butter in one hit but after you’ve finished cooking and licked the spoon 5 times, picked at some of the food you have been preparing you can see how quickly ...it can add up. Not only is licking the spoon hindering your results but also not counting all of those little extras during the day. Eating a ginger biscuit (55 cals) with your morning cup of tea, that you added two teaspoons of sugar (32 cals) to. Eating a small fun sized snicker bar (80 cals) after dinner then not tracking it because it’s fun sized and there can’t be that many calories in it, surely. All of these things are fine. You can eat your chocolate and biscuits and add sugar to your tea, but you have to remember that they all contribute to extra energy consumption and need to be counted when tracking your intake. If you are looking for ways to reduce your calories then this is one of the first places you can look to make some changes. Avoid licking knives and not only will you cut down your calories but also save yourself a trip to the hospital See more

18.01.2022 Don’t care about losing weight? Perfect There are plenty of reasons to eat healthy and exercise that don’t revolve around losing body fat or fitting into old clothes. When you’ve been on a diet for a while and reached your target weight the motivation starts to dip and you can begin to fall back into old habits.... This is where it’s time to focus on your next mission! Personally i think working on getting stronger is always a good goal but its whatever lights your fire. Start learning new skills or facing new challenges by learning a new sport. Meet some new people that share similar interests Smash out some heavy sessions after a stressful week at work and release some of your pent-up energy. Or just keep your body and mind happy by staying on path with your healthy lifestyle. With this many other reasons to stay healthy there’s no excuse to fall back into those old habits!

18.01.2022 Macronutrients are found in the foods that we eat and play important roles within the body. There are technically 4 macros but only 3 make up a healthy diet. Protein... Carbs Fats Alcohol These come at a caloric cost: 1g Protein = 4 calories 1g Carbs = 4 calories 1g Fat = 9 calories 1g alcohol = 7 calories This is important to understand as when you’re structuring your diet you need to know how many calories you are consuming. 15.01.2022 Fresh or dried bananas, which is better for fat loss? Bananas are a great source of lasting energy and one of our go to foods for a pre-workout snack. When it comes to fat loss we know that the driving force is calories in vs calories out. There are many factors at play when it comes to the absorption and utilisation of these calories but we can control what we put in our mouth.... If fat loss is your goal then you want to choose foods that are less calorie dense so you can eat as much as possible while still being in a caloric deficit. In this case, choosing a fresh banana over banana chips is going to be the better option. Mixed in with our other low calorie snack ideas you can create the perfect meal. 15.01.2022 The point of a lifting belt is to provide support for your lower back when going for maximal or near maximal load attempts on compound exercises. They create more intra-abdominal pressure which then helps to stabilise and reduce the amount of stress that is put on the spine. Think of it as extra protection of the spine when performing heavy lifts A lifting belt is not necessary when you are doing day to day training using sub maximal loads. ... We wouldn’t suggest wearing a belt unless required as it can become a crutch and stop you from using proper bracing techniques. It’s important that you build up a strong core (the bodies natural lifting belt) so that you can remain stable when lifting. There is another time you should wear a lifting belt other than when doing max lifts. Check out our blog to find out more. https://www.regencoaching.com.au/should-you-wear-a-lifting/ See more

15.01.2022 Goal setting is an integral part of success. . The problem is we tend to forget that once we have a goal in mind it’s the process that gets us there. . 12.01.2022 A goal without a plan is just a dream Without goals we never would have accomplished half the things we have. Having focus and direction is what stops us drifting through life with no real purpose. If you want to do things properly then write your goals down. ... 12.01.2022 I remember the first time i ever walked into the gym. I’d decided that it was time to start getting bigger (i was a really skinny kid growing up). There were tons of machines i didn’t know how to use, every single guy there was bigger than me and the whole experience was weird. Luckily i went with a mate of mine that knew how to use the machines and what exercises to do. We pretty much avoided the free weights and stuck to the machines. Doing the old 3 sets of 10 reps o...n each exercise. We eventually moved onto the cables and there was a rope hanging down. My mate must have walked away because when i was attempting to do some tricep pushdowns, a lovely middle aged lady came over and offered to show me how to do it properly (i was struggling with the weight). She grabbed the rope, told me some cues and moved the weight i was struggling with easily. I stood there feeling pretty embarrassed that i had just been out lifted by this older lady. There was no malice on what she did, in fact, the complete opposite. She wanted to ensure i didn’t hurt myself. The truth is, that moment of embarrassment was nothing compared to the massive body/mind transformation that followed over the next decade. Plus i now knew how to correctly perform a new exercise. You might feel as though everyone is looking at you, making fun of you or annoyed that you’re in the way but everyone is there for the same reason and had their day 1 in the gym. Take the first step and one day you’ll be able to look back and laugh at your embarrassing gym moment. See more

11.01.2022 If you follow fitness pages on Instagram or Facebook then chances are you’ve come across some of the bullshit ones that exist. The guru’s selling their secret formula to fat loss that only works if you buy their overpriced snake oil or the insta celebrities pushing detox formulas to flush out the toxins. This is the gross side of the industry. ... Using peoples vulnerability and ignorance to make quick money. I unfollowed 90% of the fitness pages I used to follow as they really brought no value to my life at all. Losing fat isn’t some secret formula that need’s to be unlocked. If you follow a coach and they’re saying you need to buy their supplements to lose fat then they’re just out to take your money. Instead of throwing your money away, try this instead: Watch your portion sizes - Your overall calories are the number one factor in losing weight. Eat protein with each meal - Protein will help repair the muscle tissue from your workouts and keep you feeling fuller longer which equals less snacking and yep, less overall calories. Limit processed foods - Many processed foods are more calorie dense which contribute to you overall calories. Do some strength training - Focus on getting a little bit stronger each week and as time passes you will grow muscle and your body will change. It also burns calories. Go walking - Get those steps in and increase your energy expenditure Burn those calories. Drink heaps of water - To function properly we need to be hydrated. Don’t really need to say much more. Sleep well - Get enough quality sleep to help your body/mind recharge and recover from life’s stressors. PUT IN THE WORK. It might be simple but its not always easy. If you’re really set on buying supplements then check out our blog post on which supplements actually do work and aren’t just a marketing gimmick. https://www.regencoaching.com.au/supplements/ See more

11.01.2022 Nutrition is the key to fat loss Unfortunately you can’t out-train a bad diet. It’s far easier to control your calorie intake through portion control and better food choices than it is to burn those calories after they’ve been consumed. The idea that you can just work harder in the gym to counteract the extra energy consumption sounds fantastic but in reality, will have you spinning your wheels and becoming frustrated as you don’t see the results you want.... There is nothing wrong with enjoying calorie dense foods as long as they are accounted for and worked into your macro/calorie targets. We like to use an 80/20 rule. 80% of the time you are consuming whole foods which can be lower in calories yet higher in micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) and 20% of the time you consume food that makes you happy yet contains less nutritional value and higher calories. This creates a balanced and sustainable approach to fat loss. As long as you are sticking to your calorie targets and those targets are geared towards fat loss, the 80/20 rule will help you adhere to your diet and see results without the need for unnecessary amounts of training. Your time in the gym shouldn’t burn you out playing catch up with the excess calories you’ve consumed. It should be a tool that helps you get stronger, fitter and healthier while also aiding with your fat loss. See more

09.01.2022 It’s great to see the stigma around mental health is changing. Many of us have suffered or know someone that is suffering with depression, anxiety or similar issues. Fortunately just like our physical health there are fundamental things we can be doing to improve our mental health.... Regular Exercise - We all know exercise is good for us so lets just say healthy body, healthy mind. Quality Sleep - Sleep helps us recharge and deal with our daily stressors. Positive Community - Humans are social creatures and we require a supportive community to thrive. A strong community also offers us a chance to share our problems with people we trust. Personal Time - Alone time is healthy way for us to connect with ourselves without outside influence, work on things we enjoy without distraction and enjoy some peace and quiet. Proper Nutrition - As we mentioned before, healthy body, healthy mind. Our body requires nutrients to perform optimally and the same goes for our mind. We need to fuel ourselves with foods that make us feel good. Set Goals - Achieving goals is a way for us to feel accomplished. We build our self worth by solving problems and growing as individuals. Big or small, goal setting is in integral part of feeling competent. If you’re struggling these tips are no substitute for professional help. Give Lifeline a call on 13 11 14 (Australia) to speak to someone right now. What are some other tips we could add to this list? See more

09.01.2022 Does this look familiar? You work hard all week then everything goes out the window when the weekend hits. Or you spend months doing all the right things, lose lot's of weight only to "fall off the wagon" and end up back at square one?... You’re not alone. This is a common cycle and bi product of our quick fix mentality. Restriction is part of losing fat but it's how we get there and what we’ve learnt along the way that matters. By taking a more sustainable approach to your fat loss you’re less likely to fall back into your old habits when you reach your goal. Try some of these tips to create a more sustainable approach: Move away from cheat days - This creates a binge mentality for some people and can have them feeling as though they’ve failed if they eat naughty food on their non cheat days. Allow yourself foods you enjoy - Incorporate foods you love throughout your weekly meals to stay on top of cravings and create a balanced approach to your diet. Track your macros - If you’re tracking what you’re eating then you can easily have foods you enjoy without the worry of eating too many calories. Be realistic with your goals - Don’t rush the process, allow yourself a realistic timeframe to achieve your goals. You didn’t get to your current state over night and it will take time to achieve results. Take your time, enjoy the process and find a way that works for you and your lifestyle. What other tips would you add to this list? See more

07.01.2022 My reasons for healthy living have changed multiple times over the years. As you get older priorities change, goals change and you develop an appreciation for your health. Healthy living isn’t always just about losing weight. It’s about looking after yourself so you can get the most out of life.... When Christine and i visited the Philippines we journeyed to a place called Kawasan Falls. At Kawasan falls they do tours and take you canyoneering (cliff jumping). 07.01.2022 Unless you have a specific goal that requires you to be very strict with your diet, you should be able to socialise and enjoy yourself. For the average person trying to lose some extra weight, having a social life is extremely important. I know what it’s like to get anxious about an event because the temptations are high and you don’t know how it’s going to end. ... 05.01.2022 Are you looking to lose weight or gain weight? Use the ReGen Coaching Macro Calculator to work out how much you should be eating! When dieting or wanting to lose fat your body requires you to be in a caloric deficit so that it uses stored energy (fat) for fuel. This causes your body to break down your fat tissue and use that energy resulting in a loss of fat.... When you’re looking to build muscle the opposite is true, it requires you to eat in a caloric surplus so that your body has the nutrients it requires to repair the damaged tissue from training and build muscle. Unfortunately, taking an extreme approach to either of these goals has its down sides. If you’re looking to lose fat and you dump your calories extremely low, there is a high chance that you won’t be able to adhere to your diet and you’ll binge. The cravings will become strong as your body is desperate for energy and you won’t be able to stay in the deficit. Eating more doesn’t mean you will build more muscle either. Generally, if everything is going well (training hard, eating enough protein, recovering properly) you will be looking to gain just under 1kg of lean tissue a month. As your body adapts to your training stimulus and you become more proficient in the gym this will slow down. There are always exceptions to this rule, new lifters and enhanced lifters will build more muscle faster but their gains will begin to slow down at some point. This means that if your surplus is too high you will be storing that extra energy as fat. The goal is to grow as much lean tissue (muscle) as you can while minimising your fat storage. Otherwise, after your gaining phase you will have to do a really long dieting phase to lose the extra fat, which isn’t fun. Once you have calculated your maintenance calories (Basal Metabolic Rate + Physical Activity Level) you will know how many calories your body needs just to maintain the muscle & fat you already have and not lose or gain any weight. This means you need to adjust your calories to suit your goals (fat loss or muscle gain). We like to start either way with a conservative number, around 250-300 cals (depending on the individual) and adjust each week as necessary. This gives you a chance to see any changes in the body without gaining too much fat or losing any muscle in the process. If you would like to calculate your macros and maintenance levels head to www.regencoaching.com.au to download our FREE macros calculator or flick me us msg and we’ll send you a link! See more

04.01.2022 Not seeing any results with your training? You might be making a few of these mistakes and holding yourself back from making gainnsssss Sloppy form: Not only is this a quick way to hurt yourself and end up on the sidelines but it’s also an inefficient way of training. With sloppy form you aren't able to stimulate the targeted muscles optimally, meaning you’re missing out on potential strength or muscle growth.... No structure: Rocking up to the gym without a plan and jumping around randomly to each machine isn't going to get you far. You need to have a plan that ensures you're progressing over time as the body adjusts to your training stimulus. Lack of intensity: If you give a half assed effort, expect half assed results. Simple as that. Don't enjoy types of training: There is more than one way to achieve results. If you're doing a style of training that you hate you'll only grind it out so long before you call it quits. Choose a training style that you enjoy and mix it up. Making Excuses: We give energy to the things that are important to us. If you continue to make excuses as to why you are constantly missing your training then you need to re-evaluate why training is important to you. Excuses will never get you anywhere. Not asking questions: Development of knowledge is one of ReGen Coaching's core values. This value applies to everything in life. If you want to get better at something then you need to continue learning. Let yourself be intrigued and who knows what you might learn! Is there anything else that you would add to this list?
