28.04.2022 A colleague from Melbourne University is running a survey on regional migration - for people who have moved to regional Victoria in the past 5 years. it would be good to have a better understanding what has happened during COVID, so please fill it out if you fit the criteria or share with those who do. https://futureofwork.unimelb.edu.au/regional-migration-sur/

25.01.2022 A 2007 New Yorker article on long distance commuting, There and Back Again, worth a read on the train home http://www.newyorker.com/magaz//04/16/there-and-back-again

25.01.2022 Some interesting preliminary data from the survey: Around 60% of people start commuting when they move to regional Victoria, mostly for lifestyle and amenity reasons. Real estate prices are also an important factor Of the 40% who began commuting when they took a job in Melbourne, for most it was because their work is not available locally.... The survey is still open - it would be great to get some tradespeople, transport workers or warehouse workers that commute to Melbourne

25.01.2022 Not sure about neoliberalism, but this article raises some issues about how country towns are changing as city dwellers (commuters) move in.

24.01.2022 This article is about increasing house prices as a result of train line improvements to Mernda, on the northern fringe of Melbourne. The recent rise in prices in commutable towns like Kyneton indicate that this is something to take into account when advocating improved regional services. https://www.domain.com.au//new-mernda-rail-line-causes-la/

24.01.2022 The survey will close next Sunday, 28th of August, so this week is the last chance to fill it in. Thanks to all who have responded and commented on the page so far.

21.01.2022 Do you live in regional Victoria and commute to Melbourne for work? Regional Commuting Research wants to hear from you.

21.01.2022 For those of you out of town, this discussion will be live streamed on the RMIT Centre for Urban Research Facebook page

18.01.2022 The link is to a conference paper from the commuting research, which can be downloaded. It looks at commuting data from the 2016 census and what it may mean for regional communities http://apo.org.au/node/178811

18.01.2022 CLARA is an interesting project, using land value increases to fund a fast rail link between Sydney and Melbourne and providing regional people better access to city work.

14.01.2022 The Andrews Government has announced regional transport funding in the election year budget: * $50 million for Geelong-Melbourne fast train planning * Upgrades on the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines at a cost of $572 million * Regional rail services to receive $704 million boost... * $313 million upgrade and new VLocity trains on Shepparton line Meanwhile, the Victorian Liberals are also promoting regional development through rail, "The Liberal Nationals have a strategy to decentralise Victoria’s population to ease the squeeze on Melbourne’s growth ... A modern regional rail service is a central part of our plan. Nationals Leader Peter Walsh said: We will turbo charge the development of country Victoria, starting with brand new trains Does this suggest that the major parties have learnt the lessons of Kennett's defeat in 1999?

13.01.2022 Interesting article in the Herald Sun today about long distance commuters. http://www.heraldsun.com.au//baf8ec9953e736b46117137501c08

12.01.2022 Thanks for all your responses and engagement with page. The survey is going well, about 1/3rd of the way there. I'm hoping to hear from some people who have started regional businesses after commuting - home offices, new shops, other ventures?

11.01.2022 From this morning's Age...

08.01.2022 2016 census data indicates a 46% increase in people commuting to Melbourne over the past decade. Growth has occurred in most areas surrounding Melbourne, and particularly Geelong.

05.01.2022 Do you know someone who commutes from Gippsland to Melbourne for work? More here: http://www.abc.net.au//big-jump-in-commuters-bendi/9397208

04.01.2022 Where are all the drivers? So far, the response from train travellers has been fantastic but I'm short on people who drive into Melbourne for work. Please share the link with anyone you know who drives.
