22.01.2022 Hi Rektango folk, just a quick note to let you know what’s going on. We’re aiming to start up again as soon as we can. When we open back up we’ll have a limit of 100 people, everybody has to be seated and there’s no dancing allowed, which will be a bit strange, but at least we’ll be a bunch of people gathered together to listen to some great live music - something quite rare and precious at the moment.... We’ll still be at the mercy of rain etc. Spring weather has foiled our restart plans already a couple of times, and we will still have to cancel if the forecast is not good. Our set up is considerably more involved now. We may need to put some sort of booking system in place and we will need to take contact details from those in the audience. We’ll try to keep a stream of the performances going too. We hope to restart very soon, but there may be a few more missed weeks toward the end of the year due to further renovations in the courtyard. We will try and keep you posted as best we can. All the best, Rektango.

22.01.2022 5 mins to go folks. See you soon ! If you wanna pay these great musos use the link paypal.me/Rektango. Gabe and the Dagrezios coming at you in five !

21.01.2022 Just letting you all know renovations to the courtyard will be continuing into the second week of December, so no Rektango for the moment. We may get 1 or 2 in just before Christmas, but we’ll post it on Facebook when we do. Looking forward to it.

20.01.2022 Hey folks, just setting up out of the rain. It’s a slightly different Crtyrd perspective this week.

20.01.2022 Helloooo, five minutes to go. Tune in, turn on and get down as they say. We’ve put out a nice warm brassiere for the fellas, although it’s lit at about 1.5 metres away, so I’m not sure how much heat they’ll be getting. Don’t forget, if you’d like to pay ‘em, use the link:... Paypal.me/Rektango See more

18.01.2022 A massive thank you to Teri Young and co for a wonderful leafy arcade stream this eve. If you’re listening post-stream, I’m afraid the first part of the gig didn’t have great sound, but from 33.44mins onward it comes good ! Thank God we got to hear ‘Crusie Ship’ in all it’s glory.... Unfortunately I apparently still can’t drive the software, or had a loose connection somewhere. Apologies for that. Go to her website teriyoungmusic.com !

16.01.2022 Good evening Rektangled stream viewers and aspiring post-lockdown attendees. Just a quick update on our plans for the Courtyard. Due to a foreboding weather forecast for this Friday, we won’t be opening for an audience until next week. We WILL, however, still be doing a stream. Staging a livestream we can take shelter in an arcade, but obviously not with an audience I’m afraid. This Friday we have the fabulous Gabe and the Dagrezios braving the elements!... When we do open, audience numbers will be limited and everybody must be seated, like any venue where alcohol is served. Unfortunately dancing is a no-no as well. (An episode of the Goodies comes to mind) To facilitate all this we’re trying to source chairs, tables and extra heating to make it as pleasant as we can. We hope some of you will still come along. Our audience limit will depend on how much seating we can organise, but will probably be somewhere between 70-100 people. Of course the good old social distancing rules still apply. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we have more details. In the meantime, if it really is below 10 degrees with ‘possible hail’ this Friday, you could stay in the warm, tune in and listen to Gabe and band play their wonderful music for you.

13.01.2022 Here's a few from last night.

11.01.2022 Hi Rektanglophiles, it’s STATS time ! I know right ? We all love a bit of statistical data, especially in these viral times. Unfortunately I don’t have the IT skills to produce a colourful column graph, so bear with me. On the upside, they’re positive stats. So while most people had their cultural input limited to the virtual world, I was lucky enough to have a wonderful series of private concerts by some fabulous folk who braved an autumn/winter Rektango courtyard.... By coincidence, we’ve had 4 months of concerts, by about 40 musicians and you’ve paid them about $4000. There’s one for the numerologically minded of you out there ! Thank you to Craig Opie who gave his time to help with some of the streams and share his wonderful photography with us. Thank you to Dean Stevenson and Randal Muir who were also there at various times to share the load and make things generally more fun and professional. Thanks to the Salamanca Arts Centre who let us use the courtyard space over these last months, and for their ongoing support of Rektango. (Ha, it’s beginning to sound like an Oscars acceptance speech - I promise it won’t go on that long). Thanks to everybody who paid the musicians. I haven’t named anyone because I want to respect your privacy, but all of you, and there were many who gave repeatedly, some every week ! Also thanks to the Jay Jerome Band and the Foley Artists who despite the situation actually gave back some of that money they earned. And the biggest thanks go to all the musicians who performed for us all. Most of them are all self-deprecating, salt of the earth, head down and just do it types, but the fact is that what they do touches us and enriches all our lives. SO before I run out of word count, here’s a list of the bands - support them in any way you can. (And of course all the other musicians putting their all into producing great music for us): The Parlour Band The Jay Jerome Band Mia Palencia, In Good Company The Black Swans of Trespass Dean Stevenson/Kelly Ottaway Les Femmes Rouges Katy Raucher and the Spectrums Teri Young Band Josh Dunn/Tim Jones/ Danny Healey/Tom Robb Quartet (they need a name) The Foley Artists Gabe and the Dagrezios Listen back to the videos if you’ve a spare moment, it’s just a small but wonderful sample of the talent here in Hobart.

11.01.2022 Well, it’s going to be a brisk one this evening, sub 10 degrees I believe. But if the tuba player’s lips don’t freeze to his mouthpiece, if the hands of the guitar player work, if the icy breath can pass through the clarinet and the frosty skins don’t snap beneath the sticks of the drummer, you’re in for an absolute treat. Tom Robb - drums, Danny Healy - clarinet etc, Tim Jones - tuba and Josh Dunn - guitar. All thrown together in a mish mash of awesomeness for our auditory p...leasure. What are they going to be playing ? I’ve no idea, I’m not sure they do yet either, but I’m very much looking forward to listening to it ! Tune in at 6pm to enjoy. If you’d like to pay these fabulous musicians, use the link paypal.me/Rektango.

11.01.2022 Well that’s all very well, but when are you opening up again I hear you ask. The courtyard is a bit of a construction site at the moment. Salamanca Arts Centre has started some renovations to improve the space this week and it’s not really practical to use. When completed, it’ll be prettier, there’ll be more places to sit and hang out and it will lend itself to more widespread use. Something to look forward to come spring/summer.... For that reason we’re having a break from Rektango for a few weeks while the major work is being done (our beloved tree from beneath which we stream is surrounded by rubble at the moment). As soon as practicable, we’ll be back and while things may be a little different even by then, we’ll be keeping it as relaxed and fun as we can. We’ll also aim to start streaming again when we have an audience. We shall keep you all informed as we know more.

10.01.2022 Oh, and just to answer the few questions about re-opening. As of 3pm this arvo, we could allow 40 people in the courtyard, but we’re just keeping the stream for the moment. Why? Well, we have to figure out a few things first - how to decide who gets to attend, how to ensure people maintain distancing, how many people we’ll need to run the half-open event, and quite a few other things too.... All this in the context of wanting it to remain an open community event and finding a way to pay any people who help out. So far you guys have been great and the musicians have been paid through the link for the stream gigs, but all that money goes to the musos themselves. Some people have also contributed money to try and improve our streaming quality, and for that we’re extremely grateful. (I know we still have a long way to go) If we open to an audience, we’ll need more people to help (at the moment sometimes there’s only one of us), and selling a few drinks just won’t cover it. We are working on it and we’ll be back online (offline ? On both lines ? Either side of the line ??) as soon as we sort it out. Just trying to give you all an idea of our situation. Thanks for your support.

07.01.2022 Terri and co just getting refreshed and we’ll be with you in 5 !

07.01.2022 It’s wet, grey and according to the Bureau of Meteorology it ‘feels like 5.5 degrees outside. PERFECT weather for Rektango ! This evening, tune in to Terri Young and her intrepid troupe of talented troubadours tearing up the terrace below the tree with some terrific tunes.... And if that’s not enough alliteration for you, I’m sure there’ll be some more tonight. See you at 6pm from undercover somewhere ! If you’d like to reward these brave artistic souls, please use the link to pay em a wage. Paypal.me/Rektango

04.01.2022 Good Friday to everyone ! This evening the fabulous Foley Artists are performing for our live stream. Truly wonderful performers, songwriters and multi-talented icons of the Tassie music scene. Hannah, Hugh and Declan will be strategically placing themselves beneath our tree and broadcasting some sonic joy into your lives from 6pm. So tune in then from the warmth of wherever you may be.... While still ironing out details, we may be opening up to a limited capacity next week. We’ll try to keep streaming the gigs to reach as many people as possible. In the meantime, if you’d like to pay these wonderful musicians for their time, talent and years of work at their craft, use the link paypal.me/Rektango. See you at 6pm !

02.01.2022 Just a quick update for you Rektanglophiles out there. We have actually been trying to start the Courtyard up for the last 2 months or so, but have been thwarted each week by the weather. (Or at least the forecast in a couple of instances) We appreciate your patience. We do need to be more cautious and plan in advance a little more than we used to - both for safety and to sustain the event. We have no safety net, and aren’t receiving any grants or funding etc, we just rely on... you all to keep going. There are still some renovations to be completed in the courtyard so it will be a bit on again/off again until Christmas. Hopefully, we will get one or two Rektangos in before then. When we are pushing ahead we’ll post to let you all know. Fingers crossed La Niña gives us a dry window one Friday soon.

01.01.2022 Don’t forget, this evening the amazing Gabe and the Dagrezios live streaming from beneath our tree in the Courtyard ! It’ll be a nippy one, but with just a token fire lit and perhaps a couple of beers, these brave souls will be bringing you some sonic warmth amidst the winter chill. Tune in at 6pm !... If you’d like to pay the guys for their work and artistry, use the link - paypal.me/Rektango.

01.01.2022 Well, the fire is lit, the fairy lights are on and it’s 8 degrees. Snuggle up in the warm wherever you are (lucky b**st**ds) and see you soon. 6pm, and don’t forget if you’d like to compensate these fabulous Foley Artists for frostbite, use the link. Paypal.me/Rektango
