25.01.2022 It is vital to uncover and resolve the root cause of weight gain. If weight gain was purely the result of eating too much, then weight loss would be as easy as eating less calories and moving more, however, this strategy rarely works for the women I see in clinic. In fact, by the time many women come to see me they are severely under-eating and still struggling to lose weight.... My preferred approach when working with women to release unwanted weight is a holistic one. We need to take all mental, emotional and physical symptoms into account and work on resolving those first. As this begins to happen, the weight drops away as a lovely bonus! 21.01.2022 This is my favourite pumpkin soup recipe! 4 cups diced pumpkin 4 cups diced cauliflower 1 brown onion... 2 garlic cloves 1 tbsp olive oil salt, pepper, herbs & spices 4 tbsp cream or Greek yoghurt Boil pumpkin and cauliflower in a soup pot until softened, drain and set aside (keep 1 cup of the drained water) Add 1 tbsp of olive oil to the pot and add the diced onion, fry until brown Add the pumpkin and cauliflower back to the pot with the onion and season to your liking (salt, pepper, curry powder, herbs, etc) Puree the vegetables with the drained water, keep adding water until you have reached your desired consistency. 19.01.2022 It is time to STOP glorifying rapid weight loss In my 9 years of clinical experience, I’ve seen slow & steady trump rapid results thousands of times Rapid weight loss is a sign of HIGH STRESS (or worse) & is not something to aspire to ... When stress is high or constant, the metabolism can become suppressed which leads to a gradual decrease in the amount of calories being used in a day Eventually the high stress beings to cause fat gain rather than fat loss We being to feel fatigued, foggy & unmotivated. We fall off the "wagon" then eventually begin the vicious cycle of over restriction again In order to achieve rapid weight loss we need to do something extreme. These extreme changes lead to STRESS This high stress state can feel quite good.. (I’ve been there myself) in fact it can feel SO GOOD that we get tricked into thinking we have actually made a healthy change The problem with this is the body can’t continue living in a high stress state and eventually we hit the wall For some people this takes months, even years to reach, for others it can take days or weeks What I’ve noticed is chronic dieters ability to stay in this high stress state shortens over time. They find themselves starting a diet every Monday & falling off every Wednesday or Friday at best The body just cant cope with the restriction any more & will force you to eat. This typically leads to unwarranted feelings of failure & guilt If this sounds like you, the solution is NOT another diet. It’s time to make a sustainable change. 18.01.2022 No matter what type of acne you are struggling with, uncovering and resolving the root cause is key. Towards the end of March 2020 I started developing cystic breakouts. At first the occasional spot was popping up and clearing within a few weeks, I also started to get painful lumps under the skin but I didn’t think anything of it (because for the most part, I usually have healthy skin and I simply blamed it on being stressed) By the end of April I was having 2 major breakout...s each month (around ovulation and at the start of my period). I realised I needed to change something ASAP to prevent the issue from getting worse and to avoid developing permanent scarring. As a naturopath, I often feel a self-imposed pressure to be the perfect image of health so going to work with swollen lumps all over my face felt awful! But luckily, I knew what to do to resolve the problem. As hard as it was to be honest with myself, I did a proper evaluation on my diet and lifestyle and it was clear to me what needed to change. I made diet changes, focused on balancing estrogen and progesterone, supported my liver to clear toxins which had accumulated, improved my gut health and started taking specific vitamins and minerals to support skin healing and scar reduction. Within 3 weeks I stopped having breakouts, and now, 6 or so weeks later my skin looks completely different and so much more healthy! This before photo does not do the problem justice as I only thought to take this when the breakouts started to calm down. Also, if you have every experienced cystic acne you would know that what lurks under the surface is incredibly painful and although you may not be able to see it, those tender lumps still affect your self-esteem and day to day life. When it comes to skin issues, the sooner you start to address the problem, the easier it is to treat. My improvement was rapid because I started addressing the issue within a couple of months of it developing. I did change my skin care routine but I certainly did not spend $100's on skincare products, I healed the issue from the inside out. Now that the breakouts have stopped, I must continue with the changes I have made to ensure my skin stays as healthy as possible. 16.01.2022 Will power seems to be the thing that people think they need more of when it comes to weight loss But the thing is, most of the time, a lack of willpower is not actually the issue When I talk to patients about the style of eating they are trying to follow it is clear to see that the amount of food they are trying to eat & the rules they have around what is "allowed" is far too strict & often not right for their body.... Our bodies need a balance of carbs, healthy fats, protein & nutrients to thrive. This balance of nutrients will vary from person to person depending on their hormone health & metabolic health If you are struggling to stick to a weight loss plan then it is likely that the particular weight loss plan you are following is not for you. 09.01.2022 Keto is NOT for everyone A lot of the keto info found online is based on a one-size-fits-all approach. For many people (women especially) this info does not take into consideration hormone health, digestive health, carb tolerance & more. When this advice is followed blindly, many find that results are short lived or it can feel impossible to stick with a ridged plan. I work with clients who have tried keto & struggled to succeed & I've noticed a few reasons why this occurs.... Impaired Protein & Fat Digestion It's easy for our body to use carbs for energy. Many people find they feel tired, hungry & miserable on a keto plan. This can be due to low stomach acid & a lack of digestive enzymes that allows us to breakdown & absorb protein & fat for energy. When working with clients I coach them on how to improve digestive health so they can receive adequate fuel from the food they are eating. Cutting too Many Carbs Carbs are not evil. Yes eating too many carbs can be problematic for some, but less is not always better. If a plateau has been reached, cutting more carbs is not the answer & can lead to fatigue, hunger, cravings and more. When working with clients I ensure they're eating an appropriate amount of carbs for their metabolic type. It's important to include a wide variety of veg to support gut health, hormones & energy. If a plateau occurs (which is rare when following a keto plan appropriately) I work with my clients to help them support the underlying issues that may have caused the plateau. We do NOT cut more calories or carbs as this only leads to a temporary solution & another plateau is sure to occur. My goal when working with clients is to teach you how to eat intuitively so it becomes easy to maintain a healthy weight long term.
