Guys were a...lways trying me and wishing they hadn't. I used to knock out a guy every weekend. There was always somebody to challenge you. I had streaks. Once I went forty straight weekends knocking out one badass or another.- Larry Holmes See more

The immoral bullying of Muhammad Ali towards Joe Frazier through the television and press, a mutual massacre that lasted 14 rounds..., and an unusual mistake in timing that drenched the victor in glory and condemned his victim to hate him until the last day of his life... This is how the most stark and dark rivalry in the history of boxing was carried out and put to rest: Muhammad Ali vs. Joe 'Smokin' Frazier. See more

14.01.2022 Mexico’s WBC lightweight king José Luis Castillo and his WBO counterpart, Diego Corrales traded brutal punches throughout their unification brawl until, at the ...start of the 10th round, The Mexican knocked down Corrales twice at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Corrales spit his mouthpiece out after each knockdown, causing controversy because of the extra recovery time he received as his corner rinsed out the mouthpiece. ‘Chico' looked beaten, but he somehow managed to return to his feet and produce one of the greatest comebacks ever seen in the sport #OnThisDay in 2005. For many it’s the greatest fight of all-time.

09.01.2022 Former world featherweight champion Sandy Saddler, best known for his four savage fights with Willie Pep, was born Joseph Saddler in Boston #OnThisDay in 1926..... Although Saddler had 162 fights, his career was defined by his wars with Pep, whom he first met in 1948 and knocked out to win the featherweight title. Pep won in a rematch, but Saddler, who had fearsome knockout power, captured their last two fights. It took Saddler 93 fights to get a title shot. He was so feared that he was forced to fight virtually every place but New York, where he was raised. He met opponents in South and Central America, Cuba and Hawaii. Fighters at his weight rarely possessed his punching ability. Saddler became a trainer after he retired. Early in his career as a trainer, he worked with boxers in New York City. He trained servicemen aboard the SS United States and later became the physical director at the National Maritime Union Gym.

06.01.2022 James "Quick" Tillis survived a knockdown to become the first person to take Mike Tyson the distance in a professional fight #OnThisDay in 1986 - Tyson won a 10-round unanimous decision victory at the Civic Center in Glens Falls, New York.

05.01.2022 Former lightweight king #RobertoDuran sensationally dethroned #SugarRayLeonard #OnThisDay in 1980 and became the WBC welterweight champion in front of over 46,0...00 fans at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal. It was even better than expected, a fight not only of superb skill, but also of courage and determination. And when it was over, decided by a unanimous verdict, there was Duran, the former brawler from the slums of Panama, the winner and still the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. "He is the best I have fought. He hit me hard a couple of times, but I was never in bad shape. He was pretty good, but he had to be because he was fighting me," said Duran.

03.01.2022 London Calling: LightHeavyweight King Archie Moore gives a royal handshake to Yolande Pompey of Trinidad and Tobago ahead of his only fight in the United Kingdo...m. An effortless Archie gave the curious UK fans some rounds and a show, cruising through the early goings with little urgency and allowed Pompey to give a gutsy effort of his own and earn a lot of pride keeping busy as Moore was happy to let him pepper away whilst occassionally reminding him who was boss with an occassional classy salvo with his big guns. Archie seemed to have an almost encouraging teacher-student fondness for Yolande but the difference in class was truly evident in the way Archie finished the lesson in the 10th round mercifully stepping it up when a tiring Yalonde's vision was starting to be obscured by blood streaming from a bad cut over his left eye and dropping him three times while limiting his punishment to hasten a stoppage from the referee. Yolande had some very good wins in his, largely UK-based career, stopping the great Dave Sands in 1951, dropping Yvon Durrelle twice for a stoppage in 1955, and later shocking Randy Turpin by rising from a first round knockdown to lay out Turpin in the 2nd round in 1958, but he was simply out of his depth against Archie Moore who, though in no rush, likely could have got him out of there far earlier had he been a little more spiteful with the kid. #archiemoore #theolmongoose

02.01.2022 Mexico's Marco Antonio Barrera produced a disciplined performance to diffuse the explosive boxing of Sheffield star Prince Naseem Hamed at the MGM Grand #OnThis...Day in 2001. Barrera exploited the previously unbeaten Hamed and pounded out a unanimous 12-round decision in a non-title featherweight bout. ''My people prepared me well,'' Barrera said. ''We didn't want to charge him and get careless. I was never hurt. He didn't hit as hard as people have said.'' There were no knockdowns. Barrera, moved up from super-bantamweight to the 126 pounds of the featherweight division, won by scores of 115-112 on two judges' cards and 116-111 on the other, despite having a point taken away in the last round. ''He was the pure winner of this fight,'' Hamed said. ''The guy fought better than I did, and that's it plain and simple. But I'll be back. I hope I'm going to get a rematch.''

01.01.2022 Sam McVea was born Samuel E. MacVea in Waelder, Texas #OnThisDay in 1884. As one of the best heavyweights of his generation, McVea was denied a shot at the worl...d title due to the colour bar, which ironically was maintained by Jack Johnson when he became the first black fighter to win the world heavyweight title. McVey ranked alongside Jack Johnson, Joe Jeanette, Sam Langford, and Harry Wills as the top black heavyweights of their generation. He fought Langford 15 times, Battling Jim Johnson 7 times, Wills 5 times and Johnson 3 times. Johnson called McVea "the toughest man I ever fought."
