02.05.2022 If you see a turtle doing this, she is laying her eggs for this year. She can excavate down to 20 cm and may dig multiple pits until she finds the correct temperature and moisture. She can lay up to a dozen eggs, which will take the best part of a year to incubate. She will plug the nest and never return. She is Chelodina expansa. If you do see one nesting in the next few weeks, message us a screen grab of the location on the map.

20.04.2022 Turtles are their shells. Please drive safely.

01.04.2022 A Griffin resident called RRQ about this female Chelodina (Chelydera) expansa, commonly known as a broad-shelled river turtle or a broad-shelled snake-necked turtle, which was bleeding from her mouth. Bright red, frothy blood like this can indicate serious internal injuries, especially involving the lungs. Our volunteer collected and transported her to the Brisbane Veterinary Specialist Centre at Albany Creek. Fortunately, the vets were able to confirm the injury was only sup...erficial, and she was released back to the wild. The x-ray showed her to be gravid (carrying eggs), which is always a happy news. During the next month or two, Chelodina expansa will begin laying their eggs, which can take as long as twelve months to hatch. They are known to travel considerable distances from water courses to dig nests, hoping to reduce the chances of predation. So, if you see a turtle like this digging a hole with its hind legs, she's getting ready to lay her eggs. Click the 'Send Message' to let us know of any sightings. See more

24.03.2022 Anticoagulant rat baits also kill reptiles.

14.03.2022 While turtles can easily shred prey items with their claws, they are opportunistic feeders. Watch the team at Brisbane Bird and Exotics Veterinary Services in action.

07.03.2022 The next generation: children of one of our volunteers release 11 Eastern Long Necked turtles in a water source near their mother's nest.

24.01.2022 It takes a eucalyptus tree more than a hundred years to develop hollows suitable to shelter Aussie animals, and just moments to cut it down. This illustration is brilliant

23.01.2022 Australia is home to about 10% of all known reptile species the largest number of any country in the world. But many of our reptiles are at risk of the same fate as the Christmas Island forest skink: extinction.

22.01.2022 Sadly due to COVID restrictions we need to cancel the Intro workshop. For new members, we will hold a series of inductions and plan to make training available online as soon as we can.

20.01.2022 A happy ending for a Friday afternoon...

19.01.2022 I think Steve would be amazed that we’ve treated our 100,000th patient. You have to keep in mind, when the hospital opened in 2004, in year number one, we only treated 64 animals. Now, we are seeing more than 64 animals in a single day. - Terri Irwin

18.01.2022 We will miss seeing all the regulars at the Expo this year but get your garden fix with this live event. Creat habitat friendly gardens folks and the critters will move right in. Be sure to include safe spaces for our native fauna to get away from pet dogs. Responsible cat owners keep their cats inside or in an outdoor enclosure

18.01.2022 Ten years ago, today, Jesse Wickman was swept away while his family was being rescued from the Lockyer Valley flood. Jesse loved the wild turtles living near his home, and would rescue any he found on the road. His legacy continues to this very day.

17.01.2022 Reptiles love rain and warm roads. That 'toad' you think you can see on the road might be a rock, a frog or even an adult male Eastern Water Dragon. When driving in the rain, please be reptile aware.

16.01.2022 An important message from Bats Qld. Netting is also a threat to our reptiles. Please only use wildlife friendly netting and dispose of old netting responsibly.

15.01.2022 Learn how to identify this charismatic bird, identify feed trees, recognise signs of feeding and to record bird behaviour.

15.01.2022 Welcome to the Spring edition of Protected, wishing you all safety and good health in these uncertain times. An update from the National Parks Association of Queensland

15.01.2022 This campaign will also benefit our reptiles so please share it widely. Unwelcome visits from rats or mice can make people reach straight for the rodent bait. While they ensure baits are put out of reach of children, pets and other animals, they rarely think about where rodents go after they have eaten baits. In fact, they probably try and think about it as little as possible.

09.01.2022 This is important information about reptiles' increased activity during the warmer weather. If you find an injured reptile in south east Queensland, please call our RescueLine on 1300 878 903.

09.01.2022 Please sign to further protect a unique area for flora and fauna.

08.01.2022 Familiarise yourself with the new animal licensing framework. Commercial and recreational animal keeping licences will change from 22 August 2020. If you have or intend to keep, breed or trade a protected animal in Queensland you need to make sure you understand the new requirements. https://www.qld.gov.au//wi/regulations/licensing-framework

03.01.2022 "More than half of the animals are found in Queensland and many are not protected under Federal or state legislation."

03.01.2022 Please be aware that these precious native animals are active during rainy weather and are preparing to nest. They are crossing roads and need our help. Slow down, pay attention to shapes on the road and assist if safe.
