29.04.2022 Having a clear vision is the first step towards achieving a Good Life. For many of us, our vision is made of typical things that are expected and assumed. But a person with disability is usually offered non-typical, and limited life experiences.... A positive vision that is not disability-focused is important for a person with disability and their family because it; - Provides clear direction - Reminds us of the big picture - Helps with decision making - Can be shared with others (to support the journey) As one of the parents we work with said: If you/your family member don’t have a vision, then someone else will make up their own for you What is your vision? #PositiveVision #Inclusion #LivingTheGoodLife

14.03.2022 More than five years have passed since Adam moved out of his family home and into his shared house. The move and the model have been a great success. Adam loves his home and having independence from his family, and wouldn’t have it any other way. He has grown in leaps and bounds and improved his social skill development, communication, and ability to do household chores. Adam is a recognised and valued member of the Bondi Junction community known and loved by neighbours, b...aristas, waiters, bank tellers, checkout personnel, store staff and market stall holders. There have been many parties, dinners, gatherings and celebrations at the house, which Adam has proudly hosted and joyously taken part in. (From the blog Adam moves out) Moving into a home of your own, like Adam did, is a typical aspiration for everyone. If you want to move into a home of your own, or are a family member or friend who wants to support someone with disability to make the move, then our "My Home, My Way" online workshop is for you. 22.02.2022 When Karim was young, his mum Sylvana spent a lot of time worrying about his future. Once she started focusing on Karim's strengths, and nurturing them, he started to achieve amazing things. Karim is now 28 and passionate about his micro-business, which raises awareness of disability in the community through a show called Karim's Mojo Disco. 12.02.2022 This week we feature step 6 from "Seven Steps to Self-Direction", our guide for working in self-directed support arrangements. Step 6: Solve problems quickly, locally and creatively Life is messy and, despite the best efforts of everyone, problems arise. Acting quickly, creatively and locally can avoid problems escalating or reoccurring.... Some problems for people with disability are complex and difficult. A good question to ask is; what will it take to? The answer will identify the next positive step that can be taken within this complexity. Problem solving is a skill that improves over time. Support networks who have learnt to support the person well and have built a relationship of trust use their discernment, confront difficult matters thoughtfully and seek opportunities to continue their learning. 24.12.2021 We are thrilled to see that a person with disability was named Australian of the Year 2022. Congratulations Dylan Alcott! Among the many matters he covered in his acceptance speech, was this valuable advice: Always have high expectations of people with disability. "My advice is to you, non-disabled people. It's time for you to challenge your unconscious biases, leave your negative perceptions at the door and lift your expectation of what you think people with disability can ...do. Because it's always more than you think. You can view/read his powerful speech here: https://www.abc.net.au//dylan-alcott-australian-/100783308

21.12.2021 It’s quite common for people with disability to find themselves in a situation that is 'sort of' like real life, but not quite. For instance, a disability specific football or sports club. Or kicking a goal in the backyard. In some cases, the possibility of the person participating in community sports is ruled out altogether. A great antidote for this kind of "default" thinking is to think typically. Asking questions like 'how would anyone else get something done? Or ‘how wo...uld anyone else approach this experience? Thinking like this, rather than focusing on the disability, can create a path for people with disability to have a life just like anyone else's. For example, if someone has a passion to play football then typically they would find a local football club, attend trainings, participate in matches, and be involved in the wider activities of the club such as social events/volunteering. This is just what Alex, featured in this video, did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYFr2T1qAHc Learn more about thinking typically and achieving the good life for your family member with disability in our Creating an Inclusive Life workshop on 10 and 17 February, 9.30-11.30am.
