23.01.2022 Important Annoucement regarding the Four Corners Program on Supplements and Vitamins from ATMS (Australian Traditional Medicine Society). If you found the program a concern rest assured it applies to the US market only, not Australia. " In its own promotion for this program, the ABC clearly states it follows a joint investigation by the New York Times and the PBS Frontline program and is in relation to the market in the USA. The USA and Australia treat supplements quite di...fferently. In the USA, the USA regulator, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), treats supplements as foods and supplements are regulated in the same way as foods. In Australia the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) oversees a two-step process for the regulation of supplements similar to that of pharmaceuticals standards. In Australia there is an ingredient listing on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG), and a finished product listing or registration on the ARTG. Both steps involve a higher level of scrutiny aimed at ensuring that responsible, evidence-based and high quality products are available to consumers. ATMS strongly believes that the practitioner is central to good natural medicine, and quality control is best effected through practitioner only product (POP). Further, safe natural medicine practice is best delivered following a quality consultation with an accredited practitioner. It is this consultation process that provides effective prescribing of natural remedies."

17.01.2022 Menopause doesn’t have to be a train wreck! The normal age for menopause is between 45 and 55 yrs with the average being 50yrs. While this can be a smooth transition for many women, for many others it can cause uncharacteristic mood swings, heavy and irregular bleeding, hot flushing, emotional highs and lows, insomnia and low libido to cap it off! Before turning to the wine and chocolate (which gives short term relief, for long term pain!) there are effective and wonderful herbal medicines and nutrients to make this transition so much smoother. While we are smoothing the transition through menopause we can set you up for a healthier future post-menopause so you can enjoy your fifties and sixties and beyond. For many women, they are often much freer to be creative or travel or enjoy their grandchildren.

16.01.2022 Are you Detoxifying Oestrogen Safely? Oestrogen, in excess, is carcinogenic (cancer causing). The process of oestrogen detoxification in the body involves the production of dangerous intermediate molecules which damage cells in the body. Many women struggle not to make these when removing excess oestrogen from the body. Where does excess oestrogen come from? Some metabolic and hormonal conditions promote extra oestrogen production such as: obesity, polycystic ovary syndr...ome, endometriosis and high insulin or blood sugar levels. Foreign or ‘xeno-oestrogens’ are also in our environment coming from things such as plastics, fragrances, pesticides and beauty products. If there is a family history of breast cancer or previous history of abnormal mammograms it is important to look at extra insurance to ensure you are detoxifying oestrogen correctly. A thorough case history as well as blood testing, hormonal testing and testing of oestrogen metabolites such as 2 hydroxy oestrogen , 4 and 16 hydroxy oestrogen can help understand the risk of oestrogen dependant cancers. This can help point women in the right direction to reduce their risk of breast cancer with specific dietary and lifestyle moderation. See more

14.01.2022 Is taking mega doses of vitamin D dangerous? The short answer it could be. It’s all about balance..... As well as testing for blood levels of Vitamin D, Vitamin D supplementation requires careful consideration of other nutrient excesses of deficiencies in the body. ... It is reasonably common knowledge that low vitamin D is hazardous to our health. However taking Vitamin D at doses higher than 2000 IU / day without a proper assessment could have potentially devastating consequences for your health. The most concerning of these is that vitamin D in the absence or presence of other vitamins could lead to calcification of the soft tissues of the body and increase the risk of stroke. One of the best examples of this is taking vitamin D in the presence of calcium and in the absence of vitamin K2 or with a vitamin K2 deficiency. Next time you are getting a check up, ask your doctor for a blood test for vitamin D, especially if you have low immunity, chronic inflammation or an auto-immune disease. And no, living in the tropics sadly does not guarantee adequate vitamin D levels. Once you know your vitamin D levels, if necessary, talk to your naturopath about how much to take in conjunction with the correct diet and nutrients to make sure you aren’t doing any harm.

14.01.2022 My Lunchbox Salad Heaven For Vegetarians (and Carnivores) remember the humbe Egg. They are a great source of protein and other vital nutrients. When making this salad I had to hold myself back from eating those delicious egg yolks! Salad: Lettuce etc plus: 2 boiled eggs, left over roast pumpkin and roast beetroot with lots of red onion and dressed with mayonnaise. If only I had some feta in the fridge! Was still amazing.

12.01.2022 The Under-rated Medicine....Sleep In our busy, super connected, modern lives sleep seems to have slipped down most people’s priority list. Getting enough quality sleep is not negotiable for good health. Enough good quality sleep is like medicine for our bodies and minds. ... In order to be healthy we need to re-instate the importance of sleep in our lives and treat it like the medicine it is. If you are not getting enough sleep you can’t be healthy. It is that simple. What is happening when we sleep? Our brain is detoxifying as well as processing and cementing memories. This lack of this ‘detoxification’ and processing due to lack of sleep may contribute to dementia. The body makes more growth hormone for tissue repair and healing. Children who suffer sleep apnoea tend to be shorter. There is evidence that people who sleep less can eat up to 25% more calories than their sleeping peers. It’s much harder to lose weight if you are hungry all the time. According to research on what constitutes adequate healthy sleep is a minimum of 7.5hrs / night. And by the way, the research also suggests that women physically require on average 1 hour more per night..yes beauty sleep is real! So in the words of Michael Leunig in ‘The Curly Pajama Letters’: "What is worth doing and what is worth having?" asks Vasco Pajama of his friend Mr. Curly. "It is worth doing nothing and it is worth having a rest", advises the sagacious Mr. Curly. "In spite of all the difficulty it may cause, you MUST rest Vasco - otherwise you will become RESTLESS!"

07.01.2022 I love the story War of the Worlds. Mainly because of the twist in the end. Beware: if you haven’t seen the movie, spoilers are ahead. It really sums up our relationship to our microscopic friends. We have evolved to live with millions upon millions of bacteria inside and all over our bodies. ... Research has found each part of our body also has its own unique and diverse flora including the mouth, lungs, bladder, stomach, small intestine and colon. Looking after our microbiome is as important as looking after our liver, kidneys and other vital organs. If it is sick and unhealthy we will be too. What does this have to do with War of the Worlds? When all seem lost it was the bacteria that came to our aid. The aliens were doomed the moment they arrived, ate, drank and breathed. Man has earned his place, by a billion lives and deaths, to exist as part of the planets own micro biome. We diminish our micro biome at our peril. If you use or take strong mouthwashes, stomach acid inhibitors, the oral contraceptive pill, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs and even certain natural remedies you then need to support your healthy flora.

03.01.2022 Fever: When Should I Worry? After reading a recent article written by a mother about her child having a fever for 10 days and rather than getting medical help, trusting her family and friends for advice and relying on her inner wisdom to guide her I was a little concerned. I was concerned that a lot of people who don’t like to give their child antibiotics or over the counter medication may read this article and let their child ride out a fever beyond what is considered safe... and this could potentially result in severe disability or death. So when should you worry about a fever in children? Firstly, any child under 3 months of age with any fever at all needs immediate assessment by a medical doctor. Fever in older children is for the vast majority of children is not serious but does require some care and management, especially bed rest and fluids. Many illnesses can be managed with natural remedies but it’s important to know when to get medical help. So when should you? If your child’s fever is particularly high (over 40oC) and/or lasting longer than 5 days and/or your child seems particularly unwell and/or there is no obvious location of the infection (it could be urinary tract, sepsis from a cut) then it is important to seek help from a medical doctor and get a thorough assessment. As a parent we all want to do the best for our children. Giving them a great foundation with good diet and healthy habits goes a long way towards getting them through illness. Illness can be frightening and it’s ok to get advice from other mothers, but don’t be afraid to go to a doctor and get that safety net for your child. See more
