23.01.2022 Proudly Aussie Built! We have WINDOWS in the 1961 Kombi Snail Camper! Apart from nailing the slide out kitchen the frame work is complete and widows have all had a successful trial fitting. One step closer!

22.01.2022 The slide out Kitchen now slides! Next job is to make it fully automatic using REDARC Electronics. Like our page to follow the progress! - 1961 Kombi Snail Motorhome - Ej25 subaru engine - Subarugears 5spd gear box - JustKampers Australia parts

21.01.2022 we’v had a few comments like this (see first pic) so we thought we’d put the naysayers comments to bed Here’s a few answers to the questions: Hi, thanks for your comment. All of our builds are certified by an Australian automotive engineer. In order for that to happen we need to jump through many hoops! First off, we must all brake parts must be replaced with BRAND NEW parts. This includes new brake pads and shoes, brake booster, brake master cylinder, rear wheel cylin...ders and then a Plateronic brake test must be carried out to make sure the front to rear brake balance % is correct. This takes care of your concern of the vehicle ‘stopping well’. Then in terms of ‘handling’ we upgrade the front sway bar from a 13mm bar to a custom made 26mm sway bar (yes we double it!), and then we add a rear sway bar too. In addition to this we upgrade all 4 shock absorbers to ‘heavy duty’ and we replace the following steering items with BRAND NEW parts: Drag link, Centre swivel pin, all 4 ball joints, steering damper, track rods, front and rear wheel bearings, fully rebuilt steering box, and a new rubber steering coupling! so that takes care of the ‘handling’ side of things. Then, we remove the old under powered VW engine and replace it with a late model fuel injected, fuel economic, over head cam Subaru Forester engine. Then finally, to top it all off we remove the old kombi gearbox and rebuild our own reverse drive Subaru 5 speed gearboxes in house and each franchisee has the option of having a Subaru gearbox! So to answer your question, this is how each of our RV’s are ‘RETRO’ which handle well, stop perfectly and have more than enough power to beat the average little buzz box off the line oh- and we don’t ‘throw old caravans on the back’, we build custom made aluminum frames fully welded to the engineers specs then clad and insulate the frame Swipe to see pics of the aluminum frames we build and a pic of us building the gearbox in house and an underneath shot of the Subaru engine and gearbox #RetroRV FRANCHISES AVAILABLE Our franchisees hire their Retro RV out and earn$$$. 18.01.2022 So..... We have had MANY concerned Kombi lovers message us and comment on our pics saying similar things to the comment pictured.. See below for our response to these statements. And swipe to see the kombis we are buying and using! I’m 100% certain you’ll be stoked with the transformation! Thanks for your comment Brad, but I ASSURE you as Kombi lovers ourselves we are ONLY taking the kombis that no one else will touch! So in light of this, we are actually putting Ko...mbi’s back on the road that otherwise would have sat in paddocks and rusted away to nothing. Literally. So as a Kombi lover myself, (and I’m prob a bit biased) I think we’re doing a great job putting kombis back on the road that no one else will touch. We buy Kombi’s that are available to everyone to purchase but no one else buys them as they are way too big of a job for the average person. So we buy them and give them a second life! So I would have thought other ‘Kombi lovers’ would have been happy that a beautiful old (rusty) Kombi that was destined to rust into the ground is making its way back onto the road.? And... ALL of our work is done to engineers specs so they can be registered. So that means all rust cut out and repaired properly and new panels welded in etc ans ALL new brake and suspension parts... the list goes on. Anyway, each to their own I guess. #RetroRv. 18.01.2022 The Swing out BBQ door on the Kombi RV is pretty much nailed and we have a loose plan on how it’s going to auto open/close. Another step closer to being on the road!

17.01.2022 The rolled, sheet metal nose fit like a glove!

16.01.2022 Which colour would you choose?

15.01.2022 The old girl has come a long way from being rescued from a dump site! Today we cladded the slide out kitchen and hooked up the 12v actuator on the 1961 Splitty Snail Motorhome so the kitchen is fully automated / motorized. Thanks REDARC Electronics

09.01.2022 Cladding! Today we started the cladding process on the 1961 Kombi ‘Snail’ Motorhome! The red strips on the aluminum is 3M VHB (very high bond) double sided tape. This sticks the 3mm aluminum composite panel to the frame and then we sikaflex every upright and cross member from the back side as well. This is to stop any rattles and also adds strength. The next part of the procedure is to trim the panels down. This is done with a trimming router and leaves the alu-panel perfec...tly shaped to the frame. Once the roof goes on we will then seal and ‘J mould’ the corners where the roof and walls meet! Next post will show the cladding of the slide out kitchen and hooking up the 12v actuator so the kitchen is automatic / motorized by REDARC Electronics!! 08.01.2022 We need your help! Another RETRO RV is ready to go to the paint shop.... What colour should we paint it? See 2nd pic for the 6 paint options... the 3rd pic is us being bailed up at the service station by a few people telling us how much they love the kombi! They thought ‘Lemon Sorbet’ was the colour to paint it.. What’s your thoughts? Thanks in advance

07.01.2022 It’s not finished or ‘gapped’ but the pull out custom engine lid for the snail Motorhome is almost done. We tried to keep the engine lid looking as ‘kombi’ as possible so we used the original engine lid & cut it down and custom fab’d the rest. One step closer to getting this old girl on the road!

04.01.2022 STOKED IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT! The 1961 Split Screen Kombi RV is back from the paint shop. Follow RETRO RV to watch the final stages of the build!

03.01.2022 While we’d much prefer building New RV’s out of Kombi’s we took on a major repair late last year. This was a 1975 Jurgens Autovilla witch extensive rust in the front end and rotten timber frames. As you will see, all rust was cut out and the timber frames replaced. While we had her we converted the engine to an EJ25 Subaru Forester engine. We were pretty happy with how she turned out!
