22.01.2022 Scam AlertRenters Beware As an Agency we will never ask a prospective tenant to pay money to secure a property before we have given an official approval email. Nor would any best practice agency. A 2 week holding deposit is normal practice, but only after an official application approval email and after an in person viewing of the property with one of our representatives.... Please be wary when dealing with people directly through private mediums like Facebook Marketplace. Before handing over any money, if you are unsure ask more questions. An agency or a real landlord wont mind you asking. Warning story here: We had a couple of prospective tenants contact our office about a rental that we have advertised. Some other person was fraudulently advertising the same property on Facebook Marketplace and trying to scam these people into handing over 4 weeks rent as Bond in order to secure the property. They had a story about how they were interstate so could they inspect the property from outside and look through the windows, and if they are happy just pay the money and they will be approved. Thank God our sign was there so the renters called us to check. The scammer even had a fairly official looking email where they have obviously copied an agencys application questions. They seem to be targeting students and recent immigrants who are less likely to know how the proper system works. What a terrible thing to be trying to do to people at a time like this. We were really hoping it wouldnt come to this, but we need to follow the advice of the Health Authorities regarding gatherings of over 500 people. Health comes first and we all need to do our part to limit the spread of COVID19. Rest assured we will be back again next year though for more Easter Fun.
