21.01.2022 The Caledonian society in Victoria was reconstituted as the Caledonian Society of Melbourne in 1884, and its membership grew quickly. The society assisted the widows, unemployed, and the destitute among newly arrived Scots, and it held social and sporting events throughout the year. Between 1902 and 1910, thirty-one new organisations were formed in Victoria alone, and many of them were in the Western District, where new waves of Scots were arriving, or where older Scots were ...passing on and the new generation sought to preserve their cultural identities. The popular ideal of Scots promoted by these associations was that they were staunch supporters of Britain’s empire. This kind of imperial sentiment was widespread, and was reflected beyond the clubs and associations in which it was harbored. At home, Scotland thought of itself as an equal, if not superior, partner in the Empire. It makes sense that this idea traveled in the baggage of Scottish migrants to their new homes. Scottishness even incorporated some Antipodean symbols and themes the Indigenous Australian alongside a Highlander on a Commun na Fiene valuable service medal is an example of this. (Benjamin Wilkie)

17.01.2022 It's 1860 Scots have been keeping it strong right from the early days in Victoria Medal - Buninyong Highland Society, First Prize Strathspeys & Reels, Australia, 1860 Medal awarded to Archibald Lamond, first prize for 'strathspeys and reels' Scottish dancing, by the Buninyong Highland Society in 1860. Buninyong, is located just south of Ballarat in Victoria along the Midland Highway. First settled in 1838, the town lays claim to being one of Victoria's first inland township...s, and gold was discovered there just before Ballarat in 1851. Many Scottish Highlanders migrated to Australia from the 1830s, often assisted by organisations such as the Highland and Island Emigration Society, and many settled in Victoria's western district. Highlanders were instrumental in establishing various expressions of Scottish cultural identity in Australia, through societies, and sporting clubs such as the Comunn Na Feinne, Highland, and Caledonian societies in Melbourne and country Victoria. Part of Scottish country dancing the 'strathspey' is named after the Strathspey region of Scotland, and refers both to the type of tune, and the type of dance. A Scottish country dance will typically consist of equal numbers of strathspeys, jigs and reels. The strathspey step (like a hornpipe) is a slower and more stately version of the skip-change step used for jigs and reels. Both 'Auld Lang Syne' and 'Coming Through the Rye' are based on old strathspey tunes Sir Alexander Don's Strathspey and the Miller's daughter respectively. The 'reel' is a lively dance of Scottish Highlanders; marked by circular moves and gliding steps. A true 'reel' consists of steps danced on the spot with a travelling figure - the setting steps can be as varied as the dancers please, while the travelling figure is usually the same throughout the dance. A reel (a Scotch Reel or Highland Reel) is noted for its rhythmic changes as it starts off with a strathspey and is followed by a reel.

07.01.2022 Who was Neil Black ? A Gaelic speaking, Scotsman whom came to Victoria,He decided to settle in Port Phillip because he felt it was more of a Scotch settlement In reference to the high amount of Scottish people in Victoria.was a successful Australian colonial pastoralist and one of Australia’s early politicians, a member of the Victorian Legislative Council,Black was born at Kilbridemore, Cowal, Argyleshire, Scotland, the son of Archibald Black (died 1808), a farmer, and his... wife Janet, née Macchananaich (Buchanan).]His native language is Gaelic but he was also fluent in English. Black sailed to Australia on board the Ariadne and docked in Port Adelaide in 1839. He had the idea of investing in Australian pastoral properties with his partner Mr Alexander Struthers Finlay, of Castle Toward, Argyleshire, Mr Thomas Steuart Gladstone, of Capenock, Dumfriesshire and Mr William Steuart of Glenormiston, Peeblesshire, Scotland. He realised the land was too expensive in Adelaide and visited Melbourne and Sydney. 07.01.2022 It's 1917 in the Victorian countryside and a young lady named Lorna McDonald Dances the Highland Fling Have we kept physical Scottish-local history in Victoria ?.....well thanks to individual people, yes.....here is an thistle brooch which is part of a traditional Scottish Highland's Dance uniform worn by Lorna McDonald for dance performances in Nullawil and Wycheproof in northern Victoria around 1917. This included a World War I fundraising event in Wycheproof in 1917.The costume, which comprises ten parts, is almost identical to one worn by her twin sister Mavis . The sisters' grandparents migrated from Scotland in the 1850s and were the daughters of Neil and Annie May McDonald. #ringwoodhighlandgames #highlanddancemelbourne
