25.01.2022 An American dentist, Walter Palmer has killed a beloved wild lion in Africa. http://ow.ly/QcVT5 The outrage is worldwide and almost universal. Putting aside the morality of hunting for fun for a moment, it is useful for business owners to see what has happened here. Palmer owns a business called River Bluff Dental. His website and facebook pages have been taken down. His Google+ and Yelp listings are still live. He is being hammered by negative "reviews", really people vent...ing their disgust at his actions. Google+ http://ow.ly/QcWcm Yelp http://ow.ly/QcWdP In the pre-internet world he could have experienced a vandalized shopfront and maybe a scratched up car. But it would have been local and relatively contained. Today the retribution is massive and global. It is conceivable that hackers took down his website. Outraged individuals have been bombarding his listings with negative comments. This is an extreme example, but important to keep in mind as business owners with a diverse online presence. You have many "shopfronts" to maintain. Oh, and illegally hunting lions in Africa is probably not a great idea.

19.01.2022 Had a big win this week getting Google to take down a defamatory review left for a client of ours. The review appeared on the clients Google+ page and was potentially very damaging. Google were very reluctant to take down the offending review but after a long process we had it deleted. Online Reputation Management is becoming very important for all businesses.

If someone on FB asks for a business recommendation - for example "can anyone recommend a good local plumber" - FB will automatically add a local map to your post. Then commenters can copy and paste the FB address of a local plumber and their business will appear on the map. Think of it as a human-powered search engine. To take advantage of this feature you need to make sure you:... 1. Have a FB business page 2. Have correct address, phone and business category information on your page 3. 12.01.2022 Google has launched a new Ad format and its a game changer for Trades and Home Services businesses. Check out this screenshot from Google. I searched for a plumber in California and Googles new "Home Services" ads appear at the top of the page. These ads show local plumbers to the searcher. But Google have taken things a step further and are only showing ads from "Google Guaranteed" plumbers. This is a game changer.... Google is going through a process of vetting plumbers they allow to advertise. Shonky trades will miss out. They check licences, insurance, review history, litigation history and criminal checks. This is a great opportunity for well run businesses with a good reputation. The fly-by-night competitors will gradually be weeded out (hopefully). The businesses being affected right now are plumbers, locksmiths, electricians, handymen, painters and house cleaners. It is highly likely to be rolled out to all Trades and Home Services and even Health and other Professionals. Note, this is only appearing in the US at the moment and has not yet rolled out to Australia. We dont know when it will arrive but you should be getting ready for it now. That means making sure all licences and insurances are up to date. It also means actively managing your business reputation. We can help you get more positive customer reviews on Google.
