22.01.2022 CBCA Book Week 2020 will be postponed until Term 4, 2020, at a date to be announced very soon. We have made this decision taking into account our members includ...ing schools and libraries, the creator community and the publishing and bookselling industries. The CBCA is committed to remaining relevant and dynamic in a very challenging business, arts and community environment. We will embrace every opportunity to continue our work celebrating Australian children's literature and supporting our stakeholders to do this. #cbca2020 #cbcabookweek2020 #gwynperkins #curiouscreatureswildminds See more

22.01.2022 I was delighted by the response to yesterday's posting of Shakespeare's Sonnet 116, and it has led me to undertake what follows. When I was a child in the 1940s..., my mother would cut up slices of fruit for me (there wasn't much) and as she put it in front of me she would say: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." How about, A sonnet a day keeps the doctor away? So...here we go: Sonnet 1 See more

16.01.2022 COVID-19 AND BOOKCLUB Dear T-L Bookclubbers At Riverbend Books we take the health and welfare of our staff and community seriously. Following the recent advice from the WHO for social distancing to stop the spread of COVID-19 we are cancelling our in-store TL Bookclub events for March and April. We will reassess the situation for May as information comes to light.... Although it may feel as though we are living in our own dystopic fiction (my thoughts are heading toward The Road to Winter by Mark Smith and Dry by Neal Schusterman) do not fear, Jane, Suzy and Pauline are working on ways to offer bookclubs to you in an electronic format in the short term. We will be contacting you shortly with further information on this. Many of you will be disappointed not to hear Richard Yaxley speak to us in person. Jane and Pauline will be videoing an in-conversation with Richard and making it available to you later in the week. If you have any burning comments or questions that you would like to pose to Richard please email them to Pauline at [email protected] We would like to take this opportunity to offer our TL Bookclub members free delivery on your bookclub orders. We are happy to post out to you the bookclub choices for April (if you want to choose some other titles to add to the free postage box please let us know). Please email Jen and Lisa at [email protected] to place these orders. We know some people have already paid their membership fees for 2020. We will be in touch with those members to discuss our options. The CBCA shorlist is announced on Tuesday March 31st. We would love to hear your predictions for the winners. We will be sending out ordering information on the day. We hope all our members stay well and safe. As we stay in our homes think of all the books we can read. "Isolation offered its own form of companionship: the reliable silence of her rooms." Jhumpa Lahiri, The Lowland Kind Regards Pauline and Jane The books for April are included in the email that was sent out to all bookclub members today.

15.01.2022 If you are a privileged white person like me, one small positive action we can take this week is to actively support the work of Australia's Indigenous authors... -- reading, educating ourselves and buying their work. If you have older tweens or teens in your life who arent big readers - try watching the Adam Goodes (former AFL player) documentary The Final Quarter which absolutely showcases racism in Australia. https://thefinalquarterfilm.com.au/ Back to books: the wonderful Pauline from Riverbend Books has created for me a list of PICTURE BOOKS JUNIOR READS YOUNG ADULT BOOKS ADULT BOOKS (Fiction and non-fiction) by Indigenous Australian authors. Let's start buying, start reading and educate ourselves. (In my top 5 favourite reads of all time is Swallow The Air by Tara June Winch. Highly recommend for book clubs!!). 04.01.2022 The sun set yesterday on the beautiful life of Jesse Blackadder. Although weve had weeks to process this inevitable thing, it still seems impossible to believe... Jesse is no longer here. It wasnt long ago when Jesse, Tristan, Sarah, Sam, Sib and I sat around a cafe table, talking about going on a writers retreat together. The plan fell together - we would spend seven days riverside, writing all day, and brainstorming into the night. Maybe wed organise guest speakers. Or run mini masterclasses. It was a writers dream. A few months ago though, in a different world before fires and COVID broke the world into pieces, Jesse told us she couldnt go on the writing retreat. Shed been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and shed be in chemo then. But lets look at a new date when this is all over. When this is all over. We hold onto these ideas - grasping, refusing to imagine the alternative. If youve ever had a child who sat under a Storyboard tee-pee, and discovered a love of writing, then your lives have been touched by Jesse. Jesses reach spread far - into tens of thousands of homes. Her own books were embraced by thousands - kids, adults, historical fiction fanatics. But Jesse also had a burning desire to unlock this passion for words for young people - to give regional kids the opportunity to fall in love with writing. After years of voluntarily running a writers group in Lismore for teens, Jesse explored the possibility of bringing the Story Factory and Valencia 826 model to the Northern Rivers. She would have spent countless hours developing programs and putting in funding applications. Only a person as bright and as dedicated as Jesse could pull off a feat like Storyboard. Not only has the program inspired thousands of young people to love writing, its given regional authors like me gainful employment for the last few years, meaning I havent had to leave my family to put food on the table. Thank you, Jesse for that and a million other things. If you listen to Jesses interviews about her time spent in Antarctica (on multiple occasions), or any of the other adventures shed had, youd imagine someone larger than life. Jesse was that. Her light was brighter than most. But she was also incredibly humble and down to earth. Shed read your rough manuscript with genuine pleasure, and give you the most honest and grounded feedback. She was never on a pedestal. Shed throw herself into the adventure of writing anything that gave her satisfaction. Jesse was talented enough to be high and mighty - but she just wasnt. In the last few weeks, Jesses friends, relatives and colleagues have had the opportunity to celebrate her magnificent life, and share stories of how Jesse touched their lives. I for one am immensely grateful I had the opportunity to not just say goodbye to Jesse, but to tell her how much she meant to me, and how much my life, and others, changed because of her. I still cannot comprehend that Jesses not here in the physical realm. But if anyone lives on long, long after death, its Jesse. My heart is big and swollen for all her knew her. But especially her beloved Andi, who will miss Jesse more than anyone. If you havent already, listen to one of Jesses conversations with Richard Fidler, or read one of Jesses novels, and your life will be touched by Jesse too. Well miss you Jesse. So much.

04.01.2022 Did you know that all the books in the Kids' Reading Guide have been selected by a team of very passionate and knowledgeable booksellers from across Australia. ...We thought you should get to know them. Introducing Pauline who works at Riverbend Books and Teahouse in Brisbane. We asked her to tell us a little about her life as a bookseller and working with children's books. Tell us about your bookshop Riverbend Books is a gorgeous independent bookstore in a renovated Queenslander in the leafy riverside suburb of Bulimba. It's a family owned business that has been running for 21 years. What is your favourite part of selling kids books The part I enjoy most in selling kids books is seeing the excitement in children's faces when you talk to them about books that you have loved. When kids come back to the store and tell you how happy they were with the book they chose that is the icing on the cake! What do you enjoy about being a part of the KRG team? Being part of the KRG team means I get to work with and learn from other booksellers who have a vast knowledge and passion for children's books from all around the country. It's a great way for us to share our love of quality children's literature. What are your favourite 3 books from this years KRG? Is it possible to choose? It's tough but my 3 favourite are: Sick Bay by Nova Weetman (#UQPBooks), This is How We Change the Ending by Vikki Wakefield (Text Publishing) and The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Ugly Animals #samibaylyart (Hachette Australia Children's Books) Can you remember what your favourite kids book or series was? My favourite series as a child were: Trixie Belden mysteries, Anne of Green Gables and What Katy Did. What books make you happy to see kids buying? Or adults buying for kids? It makes me happy to see kids trying new genres or reading outside of what they would normally read. Seeing children giving something new a go always excites me. What kids book are you reading at the moment or looking forward to reading? I am reading the new Nikki McWatters Author book Saga - the third in the series. #KRG2019 www.kidsreadingguide.com.au
