19.01.2022 WARM UPS & COOL DOWNS Such an important part of your dogs training sessions Why?... Research has proven that preparing muscles properly for physical activity can reduce the chance of injury or strain significantly. We also know that proper warm ups and cool downs dramatically improve athletic performance overall. Our dogs spend quite a few hours lying about, in turn their muscles can be quite cold and contracted for long periods of time. If they then jump into intense or high impact exercise this can pose obvious issues short and long term. Here are some small clips of how I structured a running workout with one of my dogs this morning ranging from warmup to cool down stages. I dont have footage of her stretching and rub down but I've put together a list below detailing the things I do for this type of workout. Note: The muscles you are initially warming up are dictated by the workout you are going on to do, so other prep sessions may look different to this exact one. 1. Pre-warmup Active or dynamic stretching doing chained positioning exercises where she is stretching her own muscles e.g. sit, stand, down, high-5, nose touch. Circulation massage to assist warming up muscles 1. Warm-up circa 5-10 minutes of walking at a reasonable fast speed. Gets the heart pumping and the blood flowing. 2. Bulk of Workout -10 mins Mill running +10 mins tug play -10 mins Weight pulling on sled 3. Cool down Circa 5-10 mins slow to a normal walking speed. Panting should slow and recovery should be seen throughout. 4. Post Cool down Static stretching and passive range of motion exercises while your dogs muscles are still pliable and warm. Follow on with a gentle rub down and provide your dog an area to cool down further and have a drink. Always be mindful of your dogs age, health and fitness when doing any type of exercise. I dont condone the 'weekend warrior' mentality when it comes to exercising doggos as it can be detrimental and put major stress on your walletaswell as your conscience if it ends in an injury. Gradual buildups to appropriate exercise, reinforcing good form and fitness are key to keeping our dogs happy, healthy and mobil for years to come. #riverinak9services #canineexercise

09.01.2022 SENIOR DOG PALS It's tough facing the reality our dogs age much quicker than us A busy decade quickly gone by in our lives can be the better part of their entire life. ... Around a year ago one of my dogs started to show signs that he needed to slow down and retire. He had always suffered with a couple of health issues since early puppyhood, relatively unseen to the average passer by. At first realizing old age was setting in was a hard pill for me to swallow and my thoughts quickly were redirected to whatever I could do to fight against this... The training structure I had built with him was such an important part of my day and obviously his active companionship was something of great value to me. I couldn't loose that The reality is none of us can fight against the clock as much as we may want to, we just need to roll with it and go easy on ourselves and our beloved doggos. Im sure this is one of life's 'cruel to be kind' lessons and an important one at that when committing yourself to a pet. The time we have with them really is fleeting when we think back upon the good memories gone by. I have realised learning to support an older dogs quality of life and health can be just as rewarding and enlightening. I realise now my dog is happier and more chilled than ever, his body and brain are just going through the natural motions that represent a life well lived... I'm not going to fight this I'm going to embrace it and enjoy these quieter moments together... Give a if you know an older dog that has a little piece of your heart. #riverinak9services #seniordogs #dogsofgriffith #olderdogs #happyoldgent #amstaff #staffordshireterrier #staffy
