24.01.2022 COOL SOIL INITIATIVE TO TACKLE GHG EMISSIONS ON-FARM We're excited to be working with wheat growers like Craig and Fiona Marshall (pictured) to investigate ho...w crop management can mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. It's part of the $2 million 'Cool Soil Initiative', a partnership with the Food Agility, Charles Sturt University Mars Petcare Australia, Kellogg's Australia The Manildra Group Sustainable Food Lab It will investigate new management practices that deliver a win-win for productivity and sustainability. We're working with farming systems groups Riverine Plains FarmLink Research and Central West Farming Systems Rennie district farmers Craig and Fiona Marshall said the project offers an opportunity to do their part in identifying opportunities to slow the pace of climate change. The soil tests performed as part of the project are measuring the carbon in our soils but also measuring other soil factors which may limit crop production so we can identify and ameliorate the problems and hopefully boost production, they said. This is a long term project so we will have the opportunity to track our soils over time and identify changes in response to different farming practises we might try." 06.01.2022 Diseases was the hot topic in the #northernPulsecheck meeting last week. One thing to look for is twisting of leaves, which is often a sign of viral infection. If you see this in the paddock, or any other symptoms that look like disease, you can get in touch with plant pathologist Kurt Lindbeck from NSW DPI, Wagga Wagga. You can post samples or email photos to [email protected]. Photo: Kurt Lindbeck, Photo: Faba beans supplied by Joop van Leur. FarmLink Research Grains Research and Development Corporation

03.01.2022 Most farmers attending the #northernPulsecheck meeting last week have sprayed at least one fungicide on their faba beans. Crops in the region have reached canopy closure, which is a prime time for disease. This is because older, decaying leaves provide a source for disease infection. If it has been a while since the last fungicide spray, be aware any new growth since that spray is unprotected. If you are due to spray again, find out the latest pulse fungicide information at: http://pulseaus.com.au/growing-pul/crop-protection-products.
