23.01.2022 From 'The Sunday Mail', letters to the editor, 24/12/17 Miranda C. 'Uber fare is just not fair' "At 6:15pm on a recent Friday, I caught an Uber for a 19km trip and was quoted about $60 by the driver. At midnight, for the same trip home with a 'normal' taxi, I expected the fare ride to be more expensive. When I got home and checked the receipts, the taxi ride was $53.80 and the Uber trip was $160.60. I thought it was an error, so I called, left a message of complaint, and wa...s reimbursed $40 but this made the fare $120. Then I went to the Uber office and got told that in a 'high demand' period they can charge what they like. I was unaware of this. Surely the driver should have told me this? I have deleted the Uber app from my phone and will stay with regular taxis. Be very careful if you decide to ride with Uber" I guess, the moral of the story is: If you stick with regular Taxis and Hire Vehicles (Chauffer driven), you are protected by a regulated system that ensures all drivers and vehicles are accredited, inspected and correctly licensed, with the added threat of being pulled over at any time for a 'spot inspection' by the licensing authority. Insurances are mandated, as is a FULL police and DCS clearance, before you are allowed to 'ply for hire'. Uber, on the opposite end of the scale, needs a simple roadworthy test, and a simple police check, and away they go. No threat of a spot check, no regulation on fares or what they behave like. Sure, there are idiots and crims in the taxi/hire car system, but get their ID (on mandatory display inside and outside of the vehicle) and report their actions- unclean vehicle/overcharging/un-safe driving. The industry as a whole WANTS the cowboys removed, they bring all driver's reputations down. And Uber? well, I just wouldn't. It's meant to be 'ride share', where someone travelling 'shares' the ride and the expenses- in reality, they run as unlicensed taxis, over charging, and paying no tax, whilst probably still getting 'unemployment' payments too. Is that really what we want the industry to turn into? your choice....
