24.01.2022 I didn't mean to take this photo. I was holding my phone in my other hand and must've activated the camera as I was moving this wallaby to a safe place to check over. We were just heading to the shop after a passover of another critter to a skilled carer when my six year old daughter asked me to stop the car - she uses a certain tone and I know it's because she's on the clock. She says she's putting her 'Rescue Eyes' on when we go driving, which I just love. At six she's witn...essed enough pouch checks to know how to do it herself -though it's always me who handles it. Even though we don't want children to play or handle rescues, because our aim is always release and we want them to keep their wild souls.. she is often with me and as the next generation her interest, enthusiasm and ability to easily absorb information gives me hope. I always ask her prompting questions and more and more she knows the answers. I try to involve her as much as possible while keeping the animals best interests at heart. A deceased animal is sad, but since we are moving it anyway we use these moments as a learning opportunity. She identified this as a male immediately and knew there was no pouch to check. She also asked me to move it and I let her indicate where she felt would be a 'safe place' off the side where other animals could do their job without becoming victims themselves. If we want to change the world for the better we need only look at the children around us - ours and others - and ask ourselves how we can be our best version in order to influence, teach and grow their natural willingness to do the good things. It would be so much faster and easier to do this by myself and leave her in the car every time but if I did that, sure I'd save 5 minutes but...over time I would kill off the enthusiasm she has for rescue and who am I really hurting then? 22.01.2022 This super smoochy 3 year old boy is up for adoption. Benji has stunning colouring, with his tuxedo on and black smoke fur that is black on the tips, but white at the base of the fur. He likes scratches under the chin, scratches on the tummy, scratches...well pretty much anywhere! He loves cuddles and will keep you warm on those cold winter nights. If its a smoochy lap cat you are after, Benji is the cat for you! He is desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea treated.

22.01.2022 ADOPTED This gorgeous boy came in from a stray mum. A beautiful, loving, playful little man who has been fully vaccinated, desexed, microchipped, wormed and flea treated. His mum has now also been desexed, vaccinated and microchipped, and is living along with one of his brothers with the kind family who found them. $250.

An estimated half million native animals lose their lives on Tasmanian roads each year. This is a wildlife conservation and public safety disaster, yet very little is being done. Please join me in calling for Government to install wildlife safety measures on Tasmanian roads, not only to save the lives of our native animals, but to Protect the safety of road users. From Veronika - In my work as a snake catcher and educator I see an enormous amount of anxiety, fear and misinformation about snakes that hampers people's ability to enjoy the beautiful environment around them, that lead to people making silly and sometimes dangerous decisions around snakes. Kids are naturally curious and many are determined to take them home in backpacks or stuff them in lunch boxes to impress their friends, scare their siblings or they just want to see what they feel like..yes, these are all things we have heard out of children's mouths! I started writing this book 6 years ago as a way to augment the other education I do in the community about snakes. With a book we have an opportunity sitting on a shelf or beside the bed 24/7 to educate kids about snakes in an entertaining way. I want that book to be pulled out and read over and over again. I want more than a rushed few minutes with them at the school fair. 17.01.2022 Sadly we've had a few of these beautiful creatures come to us in the last week. One was successfully released after treatment and the other unfortunately wasn't able to be saved. Please read the following and the links in the comments to learn more about these perfect critters. **PLEASE NOTE**... It is VERY important to note that if you do find and capture an injured echidna, especially during puggle season, you need to very specifically record the area in which you found it. It's a good idea to take some photos of the surrounding and a screenshot of google maps location. If the echidna is able to be released quickly after assessment and treatment it will be so that if there are any puggles hidden in a burrow somewhere they may survive too <3

17.01.2022 We love cats, but the impact free roaming cats have on our wildlife is catastrophic. Please keep your cats inside day and night or provide escape proof outdoor cat enclosures. They dont even need to come into contact with wildlife to kill them, as they can shed Toxoplasma Gondii parasite in their faeces, which can survive in the soil or water for up to 12 months, and any wildlife grazing at that site can become infected. Toxoplasmosis is fatal in most wildlife.

15.01.2022 RSPCA Animal Ambulance Rescue One piece of rubbish almost cost two lives after a mother possum was caught in an uncomfortable situation for a number of days.... Sadly, jars such as these are a common accidental trap for possums and other small wildlife drawn to the sweet smell of a sticky spread. When our RSPCA Animal Ambulance team got the call this mother possum had been contained for a number of days (two days that we knew of). With her head covered she had placed herself in an awkward position restricting her bub from clear access to her pouch. Mum was able to be caught easily due to her weak and vision restricted state and one urine-soaked bub was able to be scooped up and placed into a crate while our team worked on jar removal. With some patience and gentle work, the team were able to remove the jar before bringing the pair back to our RSPCA Wildlife Hospital at Wacol for an immediate Vet check. Dispose of your rubbish responsibly and keep bins securely closed to help save our Aussie wildlife. If you see sick or injured animals, contact our 24/7 Animal Emergency Hotline 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625).

13.01.2022 From reported sighting injured to picked up and in helpful hands in 15 minutes! As I was finding a safe place to park a member of the public had stopped and was trying to work out how to pick this fellow up, and what to do from then. It's so heartening to meet others that care enough to stop and help...(even if they're not sure how exactly :) )... Today another kind soul learnt by assisting in a rescue how to safely handle a possum and the various places they can take or call for assistance. Thanks to the person that reported this poss and for everyone who stops to check pouches and pick up injured wildlife. You're our kind of people

10.01.2022 This poor bird was put to sleep this week. His beak was twisted out of shape and his legs bowed so badly that he couldnt run. He has been eking out an existenc...e for the past few years by being fed table scraps, dog food and chicken mince. He had metabolic bone disease. Metabolic bone disease in birds results in painful degenerative changes in the bones that result from nutritional imbalance and deficiencies. Imbalances of calcium, phosphorus, and Vitamin D3 can lead to soft or brittle beaks, claws and keel, bone fractures and enlarged parathyroid glands. If you talk to bird carers, and avian vets they will tell you that this is one of the biggest causes of euthanasia of black and white baby birds that come into care. What makes this so heartbreaking is that in many instances the reason for MBD is entirely preventable because it is due to humans feeding these birds or the birds parents when the bird is still in nest. If you are feeding mince, bread, seed, sausage, chicken or pet food to wild birds you may well be part of the problem. Human food is not natural for magpies and can make them sick. A natural diet for these birds consists of insects and small animals. We often hear I love my local maggies and feed them regularly. If you truly care then dont feed them regularly and dont feed them human foods. **** If you really want to help then a compost heap or worm farm can augment the natural food supply during these dry times and still bring these magnificent birds as visitors to your yard******

08.01.2022 Let's drive like we all want each other to get home hey? Every living, breathing thing. Let's drive in a manner that allows us to be able to assess the surroundings and react appropriately. I know sometimes accidents happen, it's the way things are, it just is. Somecritters are super fast and come from apparently nowhere, some councils roadsides are unmaintained and visibility is poor until they come onto the road..... Sometimes though we look at the outcome of a situation- the area, speed limits, visibility etc and wonder... did this big fella have to die? We won't ever know when we come across a hit and run injury or death what exactly happened buy we do hope that we can make just one person be a little more alert and attentive to their surrounding and maybe drive just a little more carefully.

06.01.2022 My heart hurts when one of the tiny pouches is filled. I know their odds are greater than left where they were but they really do have everything stacked against them in odds for survival. This quote of Paul Oxton always feels so appropriate: 'There may be days when I can't help an animal in need, but the day will never come that I won't try.'... We've got you little one, however you're fate is supposed to swing you're safe and cared for by the hands you've come through and landed in. And all of you... I don't think it's a wildly outlandish idea that you are reading this and seeing our posts for any other reason but you too believe these lives matter- thank you for cheering them on and having our backs while we give them our all

05.01.2022 Driving to work today - two minutes from my house and 500m from my work place - both places being where people can bring injured and orphaned animals and I see this Mumma on her side very obviously dead with a head trauma...she's laying in the tyre line of traffic with her pouch facing the road... Her body was ice cold. The head injury would have been almost instantly fatal. Her joey..whose tiny precious foot is hanging out of her pouch.. is warm. I extract and check her. She... has no sign of injury, there is no trauma to Mums body other than her head. Her little body is malleable still despite the cold. How many hours did she lay here waiting for rescue while freezing to death, her core temp dipping to a place her life became unviable? How many people drove past? As an indication of how busy the road is I stopped counting the cars that passed me in the minutes I took to check her at 20. I was so close if someone had found her and called us. Two minutes at most from help and the passing on of the responsibility for her life. Such is the story of many road victim on our Tasmanian roads. 03.01.2022 This beautiful specimen would like to quietly let you know that lizards are on the move and enjoying some of the warmer days just like we are. He'd also like to let you know that if you see his brothers and sisters in your yard during snake season... It's a myth that they keep the snakes away so keep an eye out for their zero leg'ed buddies still too Another myth is that if they bite you, they will not release and you will need to chop their head off ... Firstly, what in heavens name would make you have one close enough to be bitten, aside from human error (you were encroaching on a personal bubble you shouldn't have been) and secondly, as they're quite fond of their heads they want to let you know if you just give them a second they will actually relax their bite, even if initially it hurts like hell (refer to the bubble comment and realise you probably deserved that) So moral is they're super cool to have around but still pay attention for other creatures and their heads and bodies should stay in contact with each other always but your body and theirs should not (Photo Credit to Sarah)

She cried most of... the night longing for her lamb after we removed it. The ewe on the right lambed twins last week, though they were very small.
