25.01.2022 Welcome to a special series of posts in which we reveal the extraordinary story of Riviera over the past 40 years through the boats we have built. Over the coming months, we will share with you a profile of every model ever launched. Over 100 individual models. But first, let us look at the foundation of Riviera.... The story began with no fanfare, no official opening, but with five boat builders working diligently in a small factory in Sydneys leafy northern beaches suburb of Terrey Hills. They were building the plugs for a hull, deck and superstructure that would soon become the very first Riviera Open Flybridge, the 38 Mark 1. Within a year the completed boat was transported on a low-loader to a boat ramp in Bayviewon Sydneys Pittwater and unceremoniously launched. Riviera was born. 25.01.2022 1987 - RIVIERA 35 The 35 was a close relation to the already successful 38 Mark II with just as much amenity; two cabins, a well-equipped galley and comfortable dinette, giving away very little to her larger sister. Australian Boating magazine described her as "an ideal size for a family to handle, economical to run and an exceptionally good investment".... The reviewer stated: "The feeling throughout the lower areas is one of spaciousness, warmth and welcome" "It's a very easy boat to drive . . . and excellent vision all around the craft". She was powered by twin shaft drive Cummins (210 or 300 hp) or Volvo (200 hp) diesel engines. Riviera built 126 of the popular 35s over six years, including 62 in 1989 alone, more than any other Riviera model in one year before or since . 25.01.2022 1989 - DIAVOLO 44 Two years after releasing its first sport boat, Riviera unveiled a larger sister, the Diavolo 44. The additional length and beam gave the designers the opportunity to add space in the cockpit to provide a wet bar immediately behind a twin helm seat and the option of a dinette table. ... Below, a second double sleeping cabin was tucked under the cockpit floor aft of the saloon area. The galley was larger and more fully equipped than her 34-foot sibling and the enclosed bathroom had a separate shower stall. She offered the same concept wrap-around dinette and forward stateroom. One reviewer commented on her "superbly soft ride, even in extremely choppy conditions and through big, rolling swells". Large MerCruiser engines delivered 420 hp each to a pair of stern drives, providing a top speed of about 42 knots with an all-day cruise speed of 30 knots. 24.01.2022 1987 - RIVIERA 27 HARDTOP/TARGA After the successful launch of the Riviera 27 open flybridge model, the design team revisited this compact model and introduced three variations. These were an Express Flybridge with the ladder to the bridge immediately behind the helm seat, an express cruiser style Hardtop replacing the flybridge, and a sporty Targa model with an open cockpit, raked wrap-around windscreen and targa over the helm and companion seats.... The interior of the Hardtop and Targa models was redesigned as the saloon was moved to the lower deck and the helm and companion seat were positioned in the bridge deck. Below a smaller saloon was created and the bathroom moved aft as a wet head. The dinette could convert to a double bed for additional accommodation by lowering the table on the starboard side. The galley was opposite on the port side and offered a two-burner gas cooktop and sink with the option of a fridge. Fixed sleeping accommodation was forward in a V-berth with an infill. These models were powered by single Volvo petrol or diesel engine attached to a stern drive. Access to the engine-room was via a large hatch in the aft cockpit floor. Australian Boating magazine featured the Targa on its front cover and the reviewer commenting "The Riv 27 performs like a thoroughbred. It is quick, soft, responsive and easily handled by the not-so-experienced boater". The 27 remained in production from 1987 to 1992 and in total, 34 boats were built in the three variant models. 19.01.2022 RIVIERA 32 1984 In 1984 Riviera launched the cleverly designed 32 model. It was a special year for the company, now a mere four years old, as it launched its 100th boat. The design of the Riviera 32 managed to all but replicate the 34 by delivering sleeping accommodation for four in two cabins plus another two as the saloon dinette converted to a double bed. She was truly a convertible cruiser, capable of family cruising in comfort or accommodating a crew for a competitive... game fishing tournament. Power options for the 32 included twin inboard shaft drive petrol (230 hp Mercury) or diesel (165 hp Volvo TAMD) engines or twin Volvo petrol stern drives rated to 175 hp each. In a five-page feature, Australian Boating magazine said "The Riviera 32 offers the cruising family/social fisherman a genuine luxury cruiser that has few peers in Australia." 18.01.2022 RIVIERA 34 MK I - 1983 She had a big sister and a little sister. And it could be said the Riviera 34 took the best from both of them - the 30 and the 38 - to be a well-rounded family cruiser or sport fishing cruiser. The real break-through design element of the 34 was the creation of two full-size cabins with accommodation for up to six adults - significant for a boat of this size.... Similar to her competitors, she provided a forward cabin with V-berth. But her secret was a second double cabin amidships, the aft half of which tucked in under the saloon floor. The two cabins shared a fully enclosed bathroom. The innovation meant that she could comfortably take an entire family cruising or a crew of fishermen into competition in comfort with a large dinette in the saloon and a galley equipped to feed a hungry throng. That is no doubt why she quickly gained a significant following. Riviera sold 45 of these craft in the 18 months following her launch at the Sydney International Boat Show in August 1983. Power options for the Riviera 34 were twin turbo diesel or petrol inboard shaft-drive or twin diesel or petrol stern drives. Australian Boating magazine stated at the time: "On the water, the Riviera runs quick, smooth and dry - shes a very dry boat. . . . The flybridge works and works well". 16.01.2022 1996 - RIVIERA 39 OPEN FLYBRIDGE In 1996 Riviera updated the successful 39 Open Flybridge model. The offering of twin-cabins with one bathroom accommodation layout, a well-equipped galley and U-shape dinette lounge remained. The changes were subtle. American Bay and Delta Yachtsman magazine commented: "It's all extremely comfortable without being overly soft or plush . . . the treatment has a nice quality feel".... The open cockpit was well-suited to cruising in comfort or sports fishing while the open flybridge with now-traditional aft helm station and forward guest seating provided the skipper with clear sight forward or into the cockpit below. Standard power was provided by twin Cummins diesel engines rated to 315 hp while owners could opt for more powerful Caterpillars rated from 350 to 420 hp each. 14.01.2022 RIVIERA 52 1985 The first impression of the Riviera 52 launched in 1985 was the massive foredeck that included five deck hatches! This model also introduced the new aesthetic of an aft-raked windscreen on the flybridge. With so much length and beam, the 52 offered more of everything: more space in each cabin, more cabins including a queen double forward with ensuite bathroom - including an electric flush toilet - a second fully equipped bathroom, large, well-equipped U-sha...pe galley and a saloon area that was expansive enough to include a large dinette with U-shape seating around a timber table and two lounge chairs opposite. The flybridge, too, was voluminous with space for twin helm seats, plenty of seating forward for guests and a large hardtop. Power for this long-distance cruiser came from twin GM diesel engines delivering options of 550 hp or 650 hp through shaft drives. The Riviera 52 remained in production for eight years. The photo shows a Riviera motor yacht flotilla cruising its way through Swansea Channel to a fantastic weekend on Lake Macquarie in NSW, Australia. As the boat builders began work in 1980 in an unassuming factory in the Sydney suburb of Terrey Hills, they could never imagine that this first model would be start of a marque that today is renowned around the world.... Launched in 1981, she offered an accommodation deck with two cabins and a fully enclosed bathroom, a U-shape galley and saloon with U-shape dinette and helm stations on the flybridge and in the saloon. Power options were plentiful - twin Volvo, GM, J&T, Fiat Iveco or Cummins diesel engines ranging in power output from 250 to 370 hp. Australian Boating magazine commended this new boat for seaworthiness and dry ride. The review stated that her internal fitout stood out against the competition of the time. For the first model from a new company, the Riviera 38 achieved 36 sales over the next six years until she was succeeded by the 38 Mark II. The interior layout was identical to the Sedan and the flybridge model added a stainless steel ladder with timber treads from the cockpit and a forward helm, providing excellent 360-degree visibility for the skipper. Guests were accommodated on bench seating on either side of the central helm.... Performance was moderate for the times - 15.8 knots wide-open throttle from a single Volvo turbo diesel or Volvo or Mercruiser petrol engine linked to a stern drive. According to Australian Boating magazine, she was a "very well presented and packaged craft" with a "well conceived" saloon. The fledgling team delivered 23 of the new yachts in that year - along with another 13 of the 38 Mark 1 boats. And it is no surprise. She offered the accommodation and facilities of a cruiser much larger than her diminutive size. In the saloon, there was a three-seat dinette opposite a comfy lounge, an ample galley and, below, a cabin with V-berth ...and a separate enclosed bathroom. With just a little ingenuity, she could sleep six adults. The dinette converted to a double and the lounge offered pullman-style bunks. A capable 30-foot motor cruiser. Power options included a single Volvo turbo diesel or Volvo or Mercruiser petrol engine linked to a stern drive - perfect when you want to anchor close to your favourite beach. According to Australian Boating magazine, she was a "very well presented and packaged craft" with a "well-conceived" saloon. 10.01.2022 RIVIERA 44 1983 Maximum accommodation or maximum comfort? The Riviera 44, launched in 1982, offered both in abundance. She might be a production boat, yet Riviera offered owners a range of options to best suit their lifestyles and the way they planned to use this adaptable cruiser. ... Beyond decisions about fabrics and colours that would reflect each owners tastes, there was a choice of accommodation layouts - cruising or game fishing. One, referred to as the Mediterranean, was designed for cruising families, providing a large forward stateroom with king-size double bed and en-suite bathroom as well as a second cabin with bunk accommodation. A second bathroom served the midships cabin as well as acting as a day head for guests. The other option was better suited to game fishers. In this layout, the forward cabin provided bunk accommodation for four adults - the crew - while the midships stateroom became the master. Of course, this new large Riviera offered plenty of space and luxury (for the time) in the saloon, the cockpit and in the flybridge. The galley included sophisticated features as an upright fridge and a cocktail cabinet. The dinette table aft was surrounded by a U-shape lounge and there were two comfortable lounge chairs opposite. The Riviera 44 was originally powered by twin Volvo TAMD diesel engines rated at 300 hp each. She featured on the front cover of Australian Boatings "bumper" Sydney Boat Show edition in August 1983. The review described her as "an outstanding craft that makes a very substantial contribution to Australian design and construction standards". Riviera built 17 of these sleek boats. 07.01.2022 RIVIERA 46 PASSAGEMAKER - 1985 The Riviera 46 Passagemaker launched in 1985 announced the companys development of large, comfortable long-distance cruisers. She took her name from a special feature - wide and deep walk-around side decks with stainless steel handrails that swept from the bow back to steps leading forward from the cockpit. Crew and guests could move forward to the foredeck in great safety. She offered accommodation in two cabins - a master double amidships a...nd a four-berth cabin in the forepeak - as well as two fully equipped bathrooms. Even more accommodation was available in the saloon by converting the dinette. The saloon area was light and airy with windows all around, many able to slide open. The L-shape galley was just two steps down from the main deck that included a large dinette and helm station. A highlight of the 46 Passagemaker was her flybridge with aft helm position, plenty of seating forward for guests and a rigid hardtop for protection from the elements. Riviera offered three shaft drive power options for the 46 Passagemaker: twin J&T diesels providing 300 hp each, twin Fiat-Iveco diesels rated to 370 hp each or twin GM diesels with 485 hp each. The Passagemaker featured on the front cover of Australian Boating magazine and the corresponding article stated "Our impressive features list includes . . . the flybridge layout - arguably the best yet in Australia - and the walk-around concept". The acceptance by the boating community is reflected in the fact she remained in production over nine years, one of the longer production periods for any Riviera. In that time, 41 fortunate families took delivery of their own Riviera 46 Passagemaker, including families in the United States as this model was successfully exported to that market. 06.01.2022 1987 - DIAVOLO 34 Since its inception, Riviera had built its fast-growing reputation upon flybridge cruisers. Then in 1987 the team unveiled something completely different, an unabashed sports boat, the Diavolo 34 - the Devil. Here was an open cockpit speedster that provided a starboard side helm in front of a captain’s chair with a companion seat to port and a wide lounge across the transom. A slim targa stretched over the top.... She was much more than simply a speed boat, however. At anchor, owner and guests could step down the central companionway into a saloon with galley, a wrap-around dinette for four and an enclosed bathroom with shower, toilet and vanity. She could also comfortably accommodate a couple overnight in a double bed in the forepeak. One reviewer described her as "capable of standing in company with the great sport boat marques of the world". She was powered optionally by a pair of MerCruiser petrol stern drives delivering 260hp each or Volvo Penta diesel sterndrives delivering 240hp each. 06.01.2022 When Bay & Delta Yachtsmans Pat Carson put the Riviera 395 SUV to the test, his expectations were high, and she didnt disappoint. Although it was a calm day in San Francisco as afternoons go, the 395 demonstrated a great deal of composure everywhere we went, Pat says. Only a few times did I back down the throttles when approaching a four-foot ferry wake. Once passed, I realised that I probably did not need to. I tried as hard as I could to get spray on the windscreen but was never successful. I guess the windshield wipers work, but I never had the chance to find out. 02.01.2022 1989 - RIVIERA 3300 The launch of the Riviera 3300 marked a new development. She was the first model to display an integrated mould for the coach-house and flybridge and introduced a more rounded, elegant styling to the saloon window line. Fisherman and Boatowner magazine described the 3300 as " a very good-looking boat . . . easy on the eye and striking to look at ". ... A second feature that would be included in most models for more than a decade was a moulded sink unit in the cockpit that could swing aside to reveal entry to the engine room. The 3300 offered owners the choice of one or two cabins. The popular single cabin in the forepeak included a generous double bed. The en-suite bathroom on the starboard side, immediately aft of the cabin, was equipped with an electric flush toilet, separate shower stall and vanity. The twin cabin option offered a V-berth forward, twin bunks in a cabin on the starboard side and a bathroom on the port side. A generous galley forward and a step down from the main saloon deck was equipped with two-burner cooktop, under-bench refrigeration and plenty of storage including a dedicated plate locker. Fisherman and Boatowner was particularly impressed with the saloon and its fabric-covered U-shape dinette lounge. "A delight to behold" stated the review. The magazine concluded: "For people buying a cruiser for the first or the seventh time, the Riviera 3300 is one heck of a package." Power options aboard the 3300 included twin Cummins diesel engines (6BT offering up to 210 hp or the 6BTA offering up to 315 hp).
