24.01.2022 Recently, we said farewell to the Westerland family, as they returned home after an incredible 122 nights at our Herston and South Brisbane Houses. Little Thomas was born at just 24 weeks weighing a tiny 582 grams. He’s been through four surgeries and many weeks at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and Mater Mothers' Hospital, but is now a healthy 3.87kgs with a good appetite! His parents Schannyne and Nathan have taken him back home to Yeppoon and we wish them all the best!

24.01.2022 Families staying at our Ronald McDonald Houses and visiting our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms enjoyed a number of Christmas activities as part of the festive season celebrations. Families decorated Christmas trees and cookies, delighted in a delicious Christmas Day lunch and also received some special presents. Thank you to our volunteers, staff and community partners who helped out during the festive season.

23.01.2022 As we come to an end of the year like no other, we’re taking a look back on the year that was :-). While the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in Australia and across the world, we continued to support our families. Amongst this ever changing landscape, we managed to open the brand new playground at our South Brisbane House, and celebrate the 5 year anniversary of the Ronald McDonald House and Ronald McDonald Family Room inside the Queensland Children’s Hospital, while carrying on ...supporting families in our Houses and Family Rooms. Thank you to our wonderful volunteers, who have shown up rain, hail or shine to greet our families, make delicious treats, assist our staff and just be that listening ear. Thank you to our staff who have navigated a strange new world, cleaned like no other and just kept on going with moving goalposts. Thank you to our special visitors, who came in to spend time with our families and put smiles on their faces. Thank you to our supporters for supporting our charity, even if you were going through difficult times yourselves. And finally, thank you to our families, for your understanding during this time. Things were definitely not what they usually were in 2020. We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy new year and we’ll see you in 2021.

20.01.2022 Earlier this month you may have seen some Santa’s taking part in their annual Santa Ride through South East Queensland. This year we were chosen as a charity of choice for the event, with the ride raising over $5,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities South East Queensland. We can’t thank you enough for your support! You too can help more families during the festive season by donating to our Christmas Appeal. To donate, please visit https://fundraise.rmhc.org.au/seq-christmas

19.01.2022 There’s just three days left to get your application in for the Charlie Bell Scholarship. These one off grants of $5000 are awarded to young people aged 15-20 years of age, who have gone through serious illness or injury, to assist them to get their education or career back on track. You don’t need to have stayed at a Ronald McDonald House to be eligible. Laura Westrop was a scholarship recipient in 2019. She was diagnosed as a young teen with a Medulloblastoma, which is a ty...pe of brain cancer. Despite numerous challenges as a result of her significant health issues, Laura was ever optimistic and never looked back. When she applied for the Charlie Bell Scholarship, Laura was looking to further her education and pursue a career as an Administrative Assistant or Receptionist. We are so delighted to get an update on how Laura has progressed in the year since receiving the scholarship. The scholarship assisted me in completing my TAFE studies after finishing Year 12 and I came out with a Certificate lll in Business Administration (Medical). Now, thanks to the scholarship and my Certificate, I have a job in a small private hospital which I am very much enjoying. As a result, I feel so much more like my old self and I am so much happier and more confident with what the future holds for me. Opportunities like making new friends, reconnecting with old friends and making new and exciting memories has made me enjoy life again. Laura has also started riding her horse again, after a long hiatus caused by her illness. We wish you all the best Laura! Applications for the Charlie Bell Scholarship close 30 November 2020. Apply now at https://www.rmhc.org.au/charlie-bell-scholarships

17.01.2022 Childers locals Monique and Nick have experienced more than you can imagine when it comes to their two sons, who have already encountered countless medical conditions at such a young age. Their son Nash was born in 2014 and since then has been diagnosed with epilepsy, autism and eosinophilic oesophagitis an allergy affecting his oesophagus. This has resulted in Nash requiring a PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) a flexible feeding tube which is placed through the ...abdominal wall and into the stomach allowing nutrition, fluids and/or medications to be put directly into the stomach. Four years later, their second son Joseph was born. When Joseph began losing weight, passing blood and had trouble swallowing, he was admitted into hospital for a month last year. Test results revealed that he had eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorder similar to the condition his older brother Nash was diagnosed with. The difference being that Joseph’s condition is gastrointestinal related. Joseph also has mast cell activation disorder, larygomalacia, epilepsy and dysphagia. Due to his conditions, Joseph has also had a laryngeal cleft repaired in early 2020 as well as recently having a gastrostomy button inserted although he still has a nasogastric tube. For a few days each month, Monique travels down to Brisbane with Joseph where he visits a variety of specialists at the QCH with thanks to their Connected Care Nurse. During these visits, the family stays at Ronald McDonald House in South Brisbane, which is directly across the road from the QCH. Depending on the visit, Joseph can be an in-patient or an out-patient. The family are often separated due to the need for the boys to visit Brisbane for medical purposes. The boys’ older sister McKenzie often stays home, older brother Nash occasionally visits the QCH for outpatient appointments, and when Nick is not working away in Central Queensland, he also joins the family during their trips to Brisbane. It’s less stressful being able to stay at Ronald McDonald House, where you can stay as long as you need to with your family whilst your children may require surgery, treatment or appointments. The kids love coming to stay and playing in the outdoor areas, said Monique. Both boys are affected by these extremely rare conditions which unfortunately include regular complications such as seizures, reactions to food and not being able to swallow. As these conditions don’t have cures as yet, Monique says this means we’re in it for the long-haul as we continue treatment and care within Brisbane.

13.01.2022 Happy McHappy Day!

10.01.2022 Yesterday, families at our South Brisbane House were lucky to meet former Queensland State of Origin stars Justin Hodges and Scott Prince. The outdoor area was a sea of maroon with the families getting caps, posters and pencil cases signed by the former players, who happily chatted with the families about their stories and talked all things rugby league. Eight week old Alfie, named after Origin great Alfie Langer, was blissfully unaware in his mother’s arms that his photo wa...s being taken with other Origin greats. A huge thanks to Justin and Scott for taking the time to visit our House and put smiles on the faces of our families and to the QRL - Queensland Rugby League for helping to organise the visit.

09.01.2022 Wishing everyone a safe and happy Christmas.

06.01.2022 How adorable are these baby beanies and booties? Our wonderful volunteers Lindsay, Susan and Christine from our Ronald McDonald Family Room in the Gold Coast University Hospital, have been busy knitting these cute little accessories for the little bubs in the Newborn Care Unit. Thank you for putting smiles (and cuteness) on our families.

04.01.2022 For families staying in our Ronald McDonald Houses, finding something quick and easy for everyone is important when you’re away from home and spending time at hospital. For that reason, we’re so grateful to our National Ronald McDonald House Charities Australia partners Steggles for providing ready-made poultry products for our families to enjoy. Families like the Brown family from Mossman, who stay at our House while little Ava receives treatment or attends appointments in Brisbane. Ava is joined by her twin brother Boyd and their Mum and Dad, Rebecca and Jeremy. Thank you Steggles for your generous donation that supports our families.
