14.01.2022 Started a bathroom reno today that someone else abandoned. I never bag other tradesmen but this is over the top. I will share some photos. Keep in mind this job had all the plaster hung ready to stop out. Only removed the plaster because it was shoddy and would have been harder to stop out than replace. There was also a extra pipe hanging out the wall that I couldn't explain. This woman saw me working across the road and asked me to come have a look at her upstairs bathroom.... She had told me someone had started the job, she paid them, and they never returned to finish the work. She also told me her bathroom had been leaking to downstairs and the outside wall. Knowing this was a suspended slab, I knew this could be very difficult to fix. I asked her whether she had contacted her insurance company, and she had. But, because the guy had already started and stripped the bathroom out, they told her there was nothing they could do. So we made a booking for me to start the job in 6 weeks time. This other tradesman that had completely stripped her bathroom out, and plastered the walls without bothering to find the source of the leak. So on the first day, I met with my plumber on the job. We had a lot of trouble finding the leak as the previous tradesman had removed the bath so we were unable to fill it to find the suspected leak. So after checking all of the pipe work with a hose we connected a pipe to bath outlet and ran water through it. We determined the leak was somewhere inside the double brick wall. We had to call out a bricklayer to remove some bricks and found the leak. I proceeded to remove the plaster and found where the previous tradesman had not joined the unexplained pipe. I also found that he had moved the light switch and joined the wires with not electrical tape, but DUCT TAPE. He also hadn't screwed in the tap for the shower. I cannot stress the importance of getting a highly recommended trademan with qualified support to do your work enough! Getting a quality trademan to do your work may seem more expensive at the time, but as you can see from this situation, it is well worth it in the end. This customer's problem could have been solved by the trademan getting qualified associates to help find the issue before having to pay someone to remove their entire bathroom in the first place. Furthermore, the dodgey wiring could have caused a fire and ruined this family's life. You get what you pay for, so please, take this in mind next time you need work done in your home. Big thanks to Darren the plumber, Shane Wishart the bricklayer, and Mathos Electrical for your help with this job. PLEASE SHARE
