25.01.2022 -- Visualise success and renew confidence -- from the Cairns Post, Friday October 2, 2019 "WE’VE heard that sports performance is a momentum and confidence game. Why is that the case? And what do you do when things are going poorly?... It’s been said that the human brain is a lot like a prediction machine. While we are awake, it never turns off. Our brain makes predictions about what’s on the horizon based on our past experiences. Makes logical sense, right? That’s where recent successes and failures relate to this confidence game. When we’ve played outstandingly and found our flow, we’re more likely to expect more of the same. We try harder, take more risks, and end up pulling out victory from the jaws of defeat. Likewise, when we’ve had a series of crushing defeats or made crucial mistakes which cost us the game, our brains are on high alert. We become hyper-anxious, tighten up and often decide to play it safe to avoid another error. That unfortunately leads to hesitation, fear, a complete lack of flow and under-performances. The question arises then: How do we get out of a slump when our recent resume is losses, chokes and dropped balls? That’s where positive mental imagery comes in. As the body and brain respond similarly to memories of the past, and visualisations of the future, we can imagine future scenarios getting it right. If we do that enough times, our brains begin to expect great things to happen, and we feel confident again, despite our past mistakes. And for those on an upward spiral of success and momentum? They can imagine a future performance going 2-5 per cent better, faster, longer. Imagine it, believe it, and you’ll likely become it.
24.01.2022 GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME The little saying above is quite literal for lifters right now. With restrictions slowly being eased, gyms will be able to open... in some capacity in a month, which is exciting news for us all. NOW is the perfect time to really get your head in the game! Being mentally prepared to lift again will be the key to getting back to your best, faster! Over the years we have learnt that the mental side of lifting can be just as important as physical practice. So I wanted to find out if it could be possible to use visualisation to maintain neuro pathways and even sharpen technical skills, when we have no access to a gym. As well as get some tips on how we can best mentally prepare ourselves to get back to training when our performance may not be where it was a few months ago. To gain a better understanding and get the answers to some of our questions, I invited our good friend Rob Gronbeck - Brain & Performance Coach from The Brain Room Vision, to give us the science behind visualisation and mental performance. Check out the clip below where we chatted about all things mental and how mental performance can help you get back to your best, sooner. To hear the enitre chat, click soundcloud link below for the full audio version. This was our first crack at podcasting, and the visual unfortunately cut out just after 23min. As podcast virgins, we would appreciate any constructive feedback. https://m.soundcloud.com//get-your-head-in-the-game-rob-gr And for more information on anything discussed in this podcast, be sure to get in touch with Rob and give his page The Brain Room Vision a like. 17.01.2022 This week's Cairns Post column is on the group flow Targa Great Barrier Reef drivers & navigators find when going hell for leather on the gorgeous tropical roads and tracks in Far North Queensland. "With the Targa Great Barrier Reef Rally on this weekend let’s focus on the relationship between the driver and navigator from a brain science and psychology perspective. First the driver they are in the zone, using all their brain’s power on motor movements, coordination, v...isual scanning and listening for instructions. The brain can do one thing really well, or two things poorly. This essentially make the navigator the driver’s ‘second brain’. Navigators process spatial information and cue the driver. They enable the driver to keep their eyes front and facing the windscreen, rather than checking down or across onto a map or GPS screen. Two brains are better than one! Those are the basics of teamwork. Where two (or more) people have a common goal and yet play different parts. Like duets, improv comedy sketches, or my favourite, beach volleyball. Everyone has their skill and strengths which complement their partner’s. The magic happens when teams develop common language and shared understanding. Improv comedy gives us great insight into how to navigate through terrain which is somewhat known and yet plenty of unknowns which pop up in the moment. Improv principles such as yes and enable the driver to hear the navigator’s instructions ‘and’ put their own imprint on the performance as they handle the moment to moment bumps, cracks and road hazards which aren’t on the map. The more a team works together, the more efficient their communication, the better they perform, the more flow emerges. Flow is where everything is seamless, works in perfect harmony, and we are ‘just’ able to handle what’s thrown at us. It’s a thrilling and intensely addictive rush, and that’s why we do it! Good luck to all competitors this weekend."

14.01.2022 My latest Cairns Post column " You’ve heard the phrase, everything was going great until it wasn’t. In preparation for our biggest moments in life, be it try outs, grand finals, weddings or job interviews, something unexpected almost always occurs which has the capacity to derail us completely. A freak accident causing injury, forgetting a USB drive, power outages, you name it and it’s probably happened to somebody, somewhere in the lead up to what are pivotal moment...s in our lives. Countless hours of toil, preparation, resources all in a moment seem to be lost as we struggle to comprehend whether we’re done for and have no hope of recovering. That mental ‘interpretation’ is often the difference between a champion’s story of resilience and someone who failed to keep a positive mental attitude of, It’s still possible! Somethings are unsurmountable, like a broken leg the day before competition, but for those grey area scenarios, where there’s a slight chance of getting back on track, that’s where mindset separates the wheat from the chaff. Dr Martin Seligman studied thousands of athletes and sales professionals. He found optimists succeed more often, persist longer, and bounce back faster they even make more money, are healthier and happier to boot! He explained, when bad things happen, optimists see the event as temporary, potluck, and causing little damage to other areas of life. While pessimists think, oh no, nothings ever going to change, we’ve stuffed up, and it’s all lost. Imagine the same scenario but consider how two different styles of thinking create a vastly different outcome. So, when faced with adversity, see it optimistically, and watch how differently you react."
