19.01.2022 Places to go 4wding #3 - Gawler Ranges Located 650km from Adelaide just east of Streaky Bay, the Gawler Ranges is one of the less publicized National parks and one of SA's hidden gems. Unless it's wet it's quite an easy park as far as 4wding is concerned, although we found a bit of a fun sandy track just south of the ranges called Sturt Track, which skirts a large salt lake (and across it in some parts,) which can be a bit challenging for those not expecting it. The park i...tself contains a loop style series of tracks with things to see along the way, the tracks themselves only cover about 150km total. There is a 40km per hour speed limit throughout, and some tracks are very nice dirt roads, so it's easy to creep over. There are plenty of camp sites, most with toilets (drop) and a couple with donkey showers. Sites are generally pretty cheap and well shaded with fire rings etc. You will need to be fairly self sufficient otherwise, and take your rubbish out with you. Here's the website to book and get maps and info; https://www.parks.sa.gov.au//E/gawler-ranges-national-park The geology and wild life are the Gawler Ranges big draw cards, if you have reasonable physical mobility there are many short bush walks to spectacular sites where the rocks have been carved buy seasonal rains. We spent a couple of days here on our way to Googs Track, (see our previous posts,) but you could easily spent more time exploring. As far as essential equipment for this trip you can get through without doing too much. But due to a healthy population of kangaroos (they aren't shy either,) wallabies and even wombats a bullbar of some sort is a really good idea, we can help with a variety of brands and models available. A UHF radio with a decent antenna would be very handy, as there is little to no phone reception throughout the park. We keep a range of antenna, Uniden radios and combination packs to suit most needs. A fridge. For a trip more than a couple of days it's a lot nicer having a cold drink and unspoiled food handy. 13.01.2022 Places to use your cool 4wd rig, #2. Googs Track SA First cut in 1973 - 1975. Googs track runs from Ceduna to the Trans-continental Hwy west of Tarcoola for just under 200km. It's just over 350km from Ceduna to Glendambo for fuel though, and a fair bit of it is sand, some steep and soft. This can be a difficult track depending on conditions.... Entry to the track is free, but camp site fees apply which you can find here ; https://www.parks.sa.gov.au//Ey/yumbarra-conservation-park There are defined camp sites at Googs lake and Mt Finke, but there are also many sheltered spots in between dunes which will do if you get stuck. There are no showers or water at these sites, drop loos only. Fires are permitted but not between November 1st and April 15th, and the whole track will close during catastrophic fire danger days and wet weather to save damaging roads. UHF channel 18 is used by most to call out your groups location (in case another group is coming the other way!) A sand flag is strongly recommended here, as I mentioned before it is a 2 way track, it's a great device to warn oncoming traffic when cresting a dune. The track was pretty good the first half or so when we came through, but 4wd should still be engaged and tyre pressures dropped. A tyre deflator and compressor are almost a necessity, we have both in stock here. (15 PSI is about the mark for most 4wds on the soft stuff.) At Googs lake there is a track that heads east to rock formations, if you want to explore and have the time and fuel. If you go this way I'd recommend shortening your flag as the trees overhang the track and it's really quite tight. This is about 4 hours round trip and was heavily corrugated the day we went through. The section from the lake to Mt Finke is where it starts getting fun. Towing trailers from her North is hard at best and the dunes are usually chopped up pretty well if someone has been trying to get over with big trailers. You will likely need recovery points, snatch straps, a shovel and recovery boards if it's at it's worst. All of these things we can help with here at Rock 4x4! Mt Finke has basic camp grounds, and a rocky track will lead you to a carpark from which the fit and crazy people can then hike to the peak. This hike is at least an hour for most people. North of Mt Finke the tracks got harder again, with chicken tracks also coming into play. Most dunes are 8 or 9 meters high but vary in how chopped up and soft. The last 15-20km are fairly easy, with some corrugations and mud holes (easy when they're dry,) till you reach the railway line. Equipment we'd suggest ; Shovel, recovery points, snatch strap, lift-kit, tyre deflator / compressor, sand flag and UHF. It is remote camping so bring everything with you and take everything you bring back. 12.01.2022 We get asked where's good to go 4wding a lot and what do I need to do it? So here's a popular suggestion we visited earlier this year not too far from Adelaide. Robe to Beachport SA. Starting 270km from Adelaide, the Robe to Beachport 4wd tracks are a fantastic place to experience soft sand 4wding. The track is approximately 60km of 4wd fun in it's shortest form, and there's fuel and accommodation options at each end of the track. Find more info here ; https://www.wattlerang...e.sa.gov.au/tourism/tourism/4wd-maps Here's a short list of things we'd recommend you have equipped before you head off. #1 A shovel - just trust me you will need to dig something. We sell a long handle shovel that breaks down into a smaller carry bag, or a neat little foldable shovel (in stock now). #2 Rapid tyre deflator - these make life a lot easier to get your tyres down to sand pressures faster and accurately. (in stock now) #3 Sand flag - whilst not legally required for this track, there are a lot of blind corners and crests on it. A sand flag will make driving these sections far safer for everyone on the track. (in stock now) #4 Recovery Points - rated recovery points on the front of your car will prevent chassis damage cause when attaching recovery straps to your car to get it out of really soft sand. (some models in stock) #5 Snatch straps - this is what we use in the vast majority of straight forward recoveries, and people expect you to provide your own if you are the car being recovered. (in stock now.) #6 UHF radio - to stay in touch with others in your crew and be aware of other crews (most run on channel 10 on this track,) also handy for calling up for help. We used it last trip to "borrow" an angle grinder for running repairs on a car. We keep a variety of UHF radios both to install or handheld. #7 Recovery tracks - if you are on your own a set of recovery boards will make life a lot easier when getting yourself un-bogged. We have premium recovery boards and mounts for them in stock. Of course it's possible to travel this track without these things, but you'll definitely find the experience safer and easier with these things. Please keep this in mind when you try to bargain with us or ask for discount. A customer asked me how much it cost to make a table.... I answered him: $ 1500 He said: So expensive for this job?... I asked: How much do you think it would cost you? He answers me: $ 800 maximum... That's a pretty simple job right? !" - For $ 800 I invite you to do it yourself. - But.... I don't know how to. - For $800 I'll teach you how to. So besides saving you $700, you'll get the knowledge for the next time you want - It seemed right to him and he agreed. - But to get started: you need tools: A table saw, a planer, a top, dormants, etc... - But I don't have all these equipment and I can't buy all of these for one job. - Well then for another $250 more I'll rent my stuff to you so you can do it. - Okay, he says. - Okay!
