23.01.2022 Can you believe it has been 50 years since the release of this incredible recording of Herschel Bernardi Sings Fiddler on the Roof? Herschel put a lot of humour into his performance and although he didn't always hit the right key, it's a very enjoyable listen (more so than the other more recent cast recordings). Library members can now listen to the album (which features many popular songs including: "If I Were a Rich Man"; Matchmaker, Matchmaker"; "Sunrise, Sunset" & "Miracle of Miracles") online via Freegal. The album can be streamed in full or three songs can be downloaded per library card per week: http://rockdalenswau.freegalmusic.com//S/32521652/c29ueQ==

19.01.2022 We finish our look at vintage transportation with this week's #FlashbackFriday looking at Rockdale Railway Station. The station is still a bustling part of Rockdale, with many commuters moving along its tracks everyday. But what grabs your interest in this week's picture from the Local Studies Collection is less locomotive and more commercial. The advertising signs, as with our look at Neptune Service Station a couple of weeks back, grabs much of our nostalgic interest. Of pa...rticular note, mainly due to current legislation meaning our eyes are free of such signage, is for Dixson's Great Yankee Doodle Tobacco. However, as striking as that may be there is something actually on the railway tracks that would make modern eyes even more uneasy. Can you see it? Is it a bird? Is it a plain? No its a man...walking across the tracks, at what looks like a rather leisurely pace. That's right, in the bad old days of tobacco advertising people would also happily wonder across the tracks. Maybe the trains were less frequent back then, but it's still a bit of a hair-raising manoeuvre, especially if you look a little further along the tracks in the picture to what looks like it could in fact be an oncoming train. Eeeep!

19.01.2022 We continue our transportational nostalgia with today's #FlashbackFriday by bringing together the public (like the trams of last week) and the internal (combustion that is, like we were featuring several weeks back) by way of the trolleybus. Actually, the link with the automotive is only illusory. It may look like a bus, but it certainly didn't sound or smell like a bus (well the fumes didn't--we can't vouch for the state of inside). Why no sound or smell? Because trolleybuse...s, as featured in today's image from the Local Studies Collection at Rockdale Library, were powered, like the trams of last week, by electricity from the cables that can be seen overhead. Pictured is a trolleybus near Dillon Street that was part of the service that ran from Rockdale station to Sans Souci via Kogarah station, Rocky Point Road and Dolls Point. The service ran from 1937 to 1959. It was one of only two trolleybus services to run in Sydney, the other unconnected service being from Potts Point to Town Hall station via Kings Cross and William Street, which only ran from 1934 to 1948. Not a problem, because you can take home some freshly cooked fish and potato scallops. Why do I feel so hungry?
