25.01.2022 Changing climate, changing attitudes to water use: "People used to tell me a garden full of Australian native plants would never win grand champion," says Gordo...n Reynolds of Toowoomba, the Queensland town that hosts Australia's longest running flower-inspired spring show. "Maybe we can cut back on the amount of annuals we grow in the garden, because they do tend to use a bit more water than others" says Mike Wells, TAFE teacher and Toowoomba horticulturist "Yes, the climate has changed, and we're having chaotic weather patterns at the moment". Maria and Gordon Reynolds were the first gardeners to win grand champion in Toowoomba's annual garden competition with a predominately native garden in 2017. Gardening Australia filmed their garden in 2016, one month after the Carnival of Flowers had finished and much of the thirsty, traditional spring flowers in town were spent. This year, months of drought has meant the Reynolds have had to resort to buying water to keep their lawn green or risk losing points in the garden competition. "If we get a bit of rain we don't have to water our established native plants," Mr Reynolds said. The Reynoldses knew their garden might not take out any major prizes this year. "But people come to see the flowers, not the grass," says Maria Reynolds, "I think watering lawns is such a waste of water, and in the future I hope we'll see less focus on lawns and more focus on the flowers". "That has been the talk among a lot of gardeners around town; it's not the 'carnival of grass'," Gordon Reynolds added. Comment: "It was Australian wildflowers that attracted me to visit and migrate to Australia, so I was in heaven that day Gardening Australia filmed Maria and Gordon Reynolds' prize-winning garden near Toowoomba", Jerry Coleby-Williams :) * View Maria and Gordon's garden on Gardening Australia: http://www.abc.net.au/g/factsheets/winning-natives/10243972 * Original story, see ABC News: http://www.abc.net.au//climate-change-vs-australi/10294172 Gardening Australia HOPE Australia The Seed Savers' Network National Toxics Network

22.01.2022 FLOWER FIND! A critically endangered species of wattle has been found thriving on an abandoned mine site in far north Queensland. The Purple Wattle is Au...stralia's only native species of purple flowering wattle and it was previously thought there were only around 500 plants left in the wild. But workers at the Target Gully remediation site, near Irvinebank, have discovered hundreds of the plants growing in a small area around an old tailings dam, and they hope that number will push out into the thousands!
