Does your child become very excited at the mention of a surprise, present or treat?... Your child might receive and feel love through the Love Language of Gifts. If gifts is not your love language, its important you start learning how to speak this language to ensure your child feels loved. A common pitfall of this one is feeling the need to spend money and views on spoiling a child. These gifts do not need to be expensive, they dont even need to cost you money at all. Its the thought that counts. Here are some things you can try and see how your child responds: - Pick some flowers from your garden and leave it in a special place for a nice surprise - Make something from Origami and leave it on their bed maybe they have a favourite animal you could make? - Paint or draw them a picture to keep - Gift something personalised something with their name specially printed just for them - Pass the parcel game between the two of you, with crafts you have made just for them. 23.01.2022 Rockmybaby Brain Building Series: around 7+ years The Frontal Cortex, our logical thinking brain! This is where children can start to think logically and therefore this is where children can start to engage in structured learning. Nathan Wallis reminds us of why its so important for children to have free play opportunities and not be pressured into structured learning before 6 7years old. ... The age is always an estimate and is predetermined by the first 1000 days (brains 1-3), it is also influenced by birth order in the family and the childs gender. What matters the most in the lead up to this stage, is that they are made to feel like capable and competent learners, healthy in mind, body and spirit, secure in their sense of belonging (Ministry of Education, 2017) Typically, first born children automatically have an advantage as they receive around 50,000 words in their first year, vs. the second born who receives around 30,000. Girls are generally faster developers than boys. We can only access this part of the brain, when our brain stem is online; when we feel safe and supported. We cannot think logically in an unsafe situation. Did you know, for about 3 years during the teenage years, the frontal cortex switches off and teenagers are using their Limbic system; emotional brain. They can no longer think logically about their decisions. During these teenage years, you need to continue validating their emotions, allowing them to feel calm, before offering solutions. Has your teenager ever said you never listen to me?!, make sure you are validating their feelings first. Reptiles have brains 1&2, full survival and movement, but no emotion. Mammals have brains 1, 2 & 3 your dog has all three, theyre happy and excited to see you! Only Humans develop the Frontal Cortex. #rockmybaby #rockmybabychildcare #rockmybabydevelopingbrain #nathanwallis #nathanwallisbrainresearch #brainresearch #nathanwallisece #qualitycare #buildingbrains #lifelonglearning #supportinginfants #infantsandtoddlers

22.01.2022 Rockmybaby Brain Building Series: 0-6 months In the first six months of an infants life, they are building their brain stem through the development of a secure attachment. Infants are in survival mode and use attachment as their form of survival. Our body kicks into using the brain stem when we experience stressful, traumatic events. It puts us into a state of fight, flight or freeze. It is connected to our basic survival functions such as heart rate, blood flow, temperature ...and our breathing. Infants between 0-6 months form a secure attachment with one parent (a dyadic relationship), then two. Infants will gradually introduce further secure attachments over a length of time. "When you hold an infant, hold him not just with your body, but with your mind and heart." - Magda Gerber Building your infants attachment: Make eye contact during all intimate routines such as feeding, changing, putting down to sleep. Talk and sing to your infant, let them hear your voice, all the time throughout the day it doesnt matter what you talk or sing about. Just as long as they can hear you and see you and know that you are there. From here, your infants will start to build their cerebellum Reptiles have brains 1&2 full survival and movement, no emotion. Infants through to adulthood, brain number 1, always needs to supported, above all else! This is why your child, should always have at least one secure attachment in every environment. #rockmybaby #rockmybabychildcare #rockmybabydevelopingbrain #nathanwallis #nathanwallisbrainresearch #brainresearch #nathanwallisece #qualitycare #buildingbrains #lifelonglearning #supportinginfants #infantsandtoddlers

22.01.2022 Rockmybaby Love Language Series... As parents, you feel unconditional love for your children and you do your absolute best to care for them, keep them safe and make them feel loved in any way possible. But did you know you and your child might give and receive love in different ways?... We tend to speak our personal love language first. So if your love language is physical touch and you are expressing your utmost love to your children with lots of hugging, your children might not be feeling the amount of love you are trying to give as their love language might be different. Do you know your child's love language? In what way does your child feel loved? Do they smile and giggle when you cuddle and tickle? Does your child often ask you to join their play? Are they seeking your attention? Do they ask you for help on small tasks? Have they continued to talk about that sticker you gave them six months ago? Does your child seek praise? Over the next week we will be providing you insights into each love language. Try exploring each language with your child and see how they respond. When you know your child's love language, you can allow them to feel the unconditional love that they deserve! 20.01.2022 Rockmybaby Brain Building Series: 6m 2yrs From around 6 months to 2 years of age, your infants and toddlers will be building their Cerebellum; directly related to movement! This is where your infant continues to build their strength, balance and co-ordination to start rolling, crawling, walking through to running and climbing. It is important to note, infants and toddlers will all develop at their own pace, what they need is plenty of free movement opportunities to continu...e building their strength, their movement. Earlier is not better. Observe more, do less. Do less, enjoy more Supporting your infant and toddlers movement: - Free movement opportunities, in their most comfortable position. If your infant is not yet rolling, allow them plenty of time to lay on their backs to build their core strength. - Lots of support, guidance and encouragement. Allow them the time to try things for themselves. If you do things for them, you snatch the chance of them learning how to do it. - For your toddlers lots of free play outside where they can freely walk, run, climb to their hearts content. What infants need is the opportunity and time to take in and figure out the world around them." 19.01.2022 Tummy time - yes or no? There are many different views around Tummy Time, if infants need tummy time to build their strength or if they will roll on their own. Pikler, a famous leader in early childhood education believes a child will roll, and enjoy tummy time when their bodies have the strength and when they are ready to.... Your infant is continuously building their strength through stretching, reaching, grabbing, kicking, rocking and swaying. They are preparing their bodies for this rolling stage, sometimes they might roll onto their tummy but struggle with rolling back. When you view this stage from the childs perspective, imagine laying on your tummy, hands by your sides or shifted in front of you but not having the strength to keep your neck lifted or push up with your arms Your infant might love tummy time and rocking about, or they might become a little frustrated with the strain on their necks and backs, not able to see what is happening in the world around them. On the flip side, lay on your back and see how your neck freely moves, how you can more freely turn your head to watch people move around you or gaze up at the trees and watch the leaves and branches rustle in the wind calming isnt it? 18.01.2022 Rockmybaby Brain Building Series: 2 7yrs You might have heard the saying Terrible Twos Did you know this stage is all part of their brain development. Around 2 years of age, toddlers start building the next part of their brain: The Limbic System, directly linked to emotions! At this age, toddlers are learning about their world and are dictated by their emotions. They cannot yet regulate their emotions, this is where you might see the Tantrums begin.... Nathan Wallis gives the example of two children receiving one biscuit each, except one childs biscuit is broken They look across to the other child who has a whole biscuit and become increasingly upset because they want their one. You may try to reason with this child that they both have the same amount, but thats not the point their biscuit looks bigger, their biscuit isnt broken! This is very devastating for your child and because they havent yet formed their frontal cortex, they cannot think the logic sense that you do. How to support your toddler and young child with building their limbic system: - Validate, validate, validate their emotions. - Once you have validated their emotions, and they have settled, offer them another choice Reptiles have brains 1&2, full survival and movement, but no emotion. Mammals have brains 1, 2 & 3 your dog has all three, theyre happy and excited to see you!
