25.01.2022 Last night was our first upclose experience with a turtle nesting. This is the process the turtle followed: 1. Dig a big hole- or 'body pit' using all 4 flippers.. 2. Dig a chamber inside the body pit with her rear flippers. The chamber is deep as she can reach down. A good chamber has to be dug into wet sand. 3. Lay the eggs into the chamber. The Flatback Turtle lays 50 eggs, an Hawkesbill lays 80. This can take up to 15 minutes. 4. Fill in rest of the chamber with sand, pa...tting down on top. 5. Cover over the body pit, then head back to the water. Job done! Wait until we tell you what we do to the turtle, as a part of the research, before it gets back in the water.

20.01.2022 HISTORY LESSON ON 1946 STRIKE Roebourne High students gathered today at the 5 Mile community founded by Beth and Marshall Smith, to hear the stories of the fa...mous historical 1946 Pilbara strike by Indigenous pastoral workers over wages and conditions. Many people were chained and jailed after walking off the stations to Port Hedland, later to be released, moving into independent lives panning for gold and tantalite minerals for money. Conditions were tough but descendants of the elders involved still have the stories. ABC Pilbara, Susan Standen

19.01.2022 Written by Shelley Davis - TIC from Karratha SHS On Monday 7th Dec, three year 9's headed off to Perth to visit UWA for the 4-day Aspire camp. For some it was their first time on a plane! On day 1 we got to explore parts of the campus by taking part in an amazing race style adventure. The UWA campus is very large so we were unable to see all of it but were in awe of what we did see. We took part in some ice-breakers to get to know the students from the 15 other schools that a...lso attended the camp. We stayed in our own room, shared bathroom dorm accommodation and enjoyed the wonderful buffet food provided at the uni hall. On day two, after a welcome to country and introduction talk from Alan Cransberg the chairman of West Coast Eagles, we did some more team-building exercises before heading off to Scitech. There we got to watch a show at the planetarium and explore and enjoy the interactive science-based activities. After Scitech we headed over to the WA state library and viewed the collections and exhibitions. We then returned to UWA and took part in more activities before dinner and bed. On day 3 we tried out some traditional Chinese games delivered by the Confucius Institute. Then we headed off to learn about Health and Medical Sciences and the courses offered where we learnt how to take blood pressure, test reflexes and plastered up some pretend broken fingers. Next was experiencing the Arts sector by taking part in Shakespearean Insults that we performed at the outdoor theatre. Then we went to the Science labs and took part in an Agriculture activity where we learnt about microorganisms in soil and got to look at them under telescopes. After this we headed off to The WA Art Gallery where we had a guided tour looking at some very moving pieces of art and sculpture. Once we were back at UWA after dinner we wrote letters to our future selves which will be posted back to us in a year or two's time to reflect on our goals and how far we've come. Day 4 had us pack our things and come down to the common grass area for a group Tai-Chi activity. We then walked down to the Swan river before heading up to take part in a suburbs activity which looked at how the planning is done to build new suburbs and communities. After a massive 4 days we were eager to fly home to our families and share all of our experiences. See more

16.01.2022 Article prepared by Ms Kerry Veitch The City of Karratha Ranger Coordinator Darrell Hutchens came out to talk to the students about fire safety and his role. Students talked with Darrell about traditional fire management techniques and discussed how the boys in the book they are reading (the Barrumbi kids) performed back burning. Students also learnt about the science of fires. Students got to see the fire truck up close, learnt what to do in an emergency and got to use the f...ire hose. They also heard about the volunteer fire service and opportunities to be involved in the community volunteer training programs, should they wish to in the future. Students also completed an online lesson on fire (using Stile) to prepare before Darrell's visit. The lesson saw the students... *brainstorm effects of the bushfires on people, other living things and the environment *watch a video describing the scale and impact of the bushfires *reflect on a satellite photo of the bushfires by completing the See, Think, Wonder Visible Thinking *explore a 360 video showing the passage of a bushfire through a forest *analyse the basic causes of bushfires using the fire triangle * and consider how climate change is making fires in Australia more frequent and intense

11.01.2022 As promised, we are sharing what we do with the turtle after they have nested and buried their eggs. We intercept the turtle, before they enter the water, and do the following as part of the research for the North West Turtle Nesting project: 1. Check if the turtle has been tagged either with a metal tag or PIT barcode. 2. If not, we inject a PIT barcode 3. We measure the length of the carapace (top shell)... 4. We take a biopsy sample for DNA and isotope testing. The turtle is VERY STRONG!! It can still move forward with Mr D holding it in front and Kylan from the side. Then we let the turtle go back into the water...it's probably very annoyed with us! We only use red light because the turtles are sensitive to white light
