25.01.2022 This morning (Thursday 6/8/20) we had a surprise visitor, Alyssa Hayden MLA and her assistant Amy. As they were due at another local event later in the morning, they decided to drop in to see how we were faring in our present temporary accommodation. As this had been an unplanned visit, she had unfortunately omitted to bring morning tea (please note visitors!), but the day was saved by one of our members Bear bringing in some homemade scones with jam and cream. Well done Bear for saving the day! Not that all we do is sit around and drink tea and chat, but we are somewhat limited at present in doing what most Mens Sheds do, fixing and making things. A very enjoyable visit.

25.01.2022 A big "thank you" to all those who took part in the two month photo competition run over May/June. In the end it was decided that they were all so great, that picking a winner was not possible! After discussion it was decided to change the format of this section to learn more about photography and post production software. Each month members will be invited to submit as many photographs as they like, taken on any type of camera, and submit them to the following email address:... [email protected] At the end of each month those participating will be invited to talk about their pictures and what they did to them in post production. No signing up / no fees / just fun!

25.01.2022 For our Sundowner this month we had a very interesting talk form Murray Hall, author of Walk A War In My Shoes. Murray explained how he had been left a wealth of documents relating to his Uncle, who took part in and was killed during the Great War. A vey human and fascinating account of one soldiers experiences, which he shared with his family by letter. Thanks Murray for sharing your story with us.

23.01.2022 Wednesday 18 November the Shed held it’s annual Christmas get together at the Roleystone Country Club. With forty members and their partners including two of our main local sponsors, Rob and Kerry from Fidock & Co. Real Estate and Jarrah Settlements as well as Pam and Jon representing the Roleystone-Karragullen Bendigo Bank, a great evening was had by all. Our Chairman Neil, gave us an update on the progress with our proposed new home at the Bedfordale Volunteer Fire Station, which the City of Armadale has planned for use by ourselves and the Armadale Community Men’s Shed, once the new Bedfordale Fire Station is complete. Thanks to Ronnie and Judy who decorated the magnificent tables, with particular thanks to Ronnie for all the organisation, both before and during the evening. A great night!

23.01.2022 Australia Day 2021, the Shed was honoured by having two nominations for awards from the City of Armadale, the event being held at the Armadale District Hall in Armadale. The ceremony commenced with being ‘Welcomed to Country’ by Nigel Wilkes and the Whadjuk Noongar Dancers. This was then followed by awards for organisations and citizens. We had been entered for the Community Organisation of the Year and Community Citizen of the Year (Senior). Unfortunately we didn’t win eithe...r of them, but it was with great pride that Neil and I attended the Celebrations. I am however, pleased to report that our Treasurer Henry Zelones was awarded the Freedom of the City of Armadale for his service as a Councillor, and more recently as City Mayor. After the awards, the second part of the ceremony the guests welcomed our newest citizens as they took the ‘Citizens Pledge’, and became real ozys. It was a very enjoyable occasion, even if it did start a little late! Not having read the pledge since I was granted citizenship many years ago, I reproduce it here as it encapsulates what it is to be Australian. From this time forward, (under God) I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people, whose democratic beliefs I share, whose rights and liberties I respect, and whose laws I will uphold and obey.

23.01.2022 This month, in keeping with the start of the fire season, we had two local Volunteer Fire Brigade members, John and Mark, give us an up-to-date briefing on fire safety. Our thanks to them for their time and a very informative discussion. This was followed by a sausage sizzle (inc. fish fingers) run by David - thanks Chef!

21.01.2022 On Wednesday 15 July, ten members of the Shed gathered at the Araluen Golf Resort for the RMCS Golf Challenge Day. Five pairs took part in a 9 hole Ambrose event, the "challenge" part being playing golf! The event was won by the partnership of Roy and Tony, with Neil and Andrew bringing up the rear. Despite being a trifle damp at times, a great time was had by all, with very little sledging! A great day out.

19.01.2022 You just can’t stop him. A few ingredients, a large oven and stand by! This week our kitchen Guru, Mick produced savoury cheesy biscuits. They were scrummy. In true Men’s Shed prepared organisation, Mick came in with the mixture already rolled and ready to cut, with just a quick bake to produce the tasty morsels. The end result is that they all went in double quick time, complimenting the wonderful strawberry cake that Kris Granheim had bought in as he is leaving us for pastures new. Now what’s that diet program’s name?

19.01.2022 Recently, one of our Shed members, Big Phil, took along some wood off-cuts for pupils at the Eton Farm School, Mardella. As can be seen, the children thoroughly enjoyed banging nails into various lumps of wood, hopefully without hitting fingers. Great fun! (If anyone wants some fire kindling, we have quite a few large bags at $5/bag.)

19.01.2022 Lots to do at the Shed today, with 15 members at morning tea! With various projects underway, members were busy in all the areas, woodworking, metalworking and even nerds corner (oh! for some new computers).

18.01.2022 At our regular Sundowner this Friday, our guest speaker is Murray Hall. He will talking to us about his book Walk a War in My Shoes. Make sure you dont miss it and remember to bring a plate :-)

18.01.2022 This week our resident Chef Mick, came in armed with all the ingredients for Pao de Queijo (cheese rolls). They were delicious! Very simple and quick to make, so I am going to have an attempt to make them this weekend. Well done Mick, your fame is spreading far and wide!

17.01.2022 Although there weren’t too many members at the Shed today, those attending were treated to not one, but two lots of lemonade scones with jam and cream. Yum! Our resident on site chef - Mick, came with all the ingredients, whilst Bear brought in some he had carefully prepared at home. Thanks guys for a very delightful morning tea, and keep them coming!

16.01.2022 I’ll have to stop going to the Shed, with all the wonderful food being brought in, at this rate I’ll soon be loading on the kilos! Today’s culinary delights were supplied by Len and our in-house chef, Mick. Len did his beautiful lightly fried whiting crumbed fillets whilst Mick supplied some Glamorgan Patties, a delightful mixture of leek, cheese, potato and breadcrumbs (you’ll have to find the recipe). Needless to say there was nothing left at the end of morning tea! Thanks also go to Bear for bringing in his newly made shuffle board, which provided the mornings entertainment!

16.01.2022 Last Wednesday we held our annual Ladies Night for members of the Shed. Once again, we enjoyed a suitably festive meal on delightfully decorated tables at the Roleystone Country Club. Our Chairman, Neil gave a welcome to all and an acknowledgement of all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to make the Shed and events like the meal successful. This was later followed by Shed member Terry, reiterating his thanks on behalf of the membership. Shed Boss Ron, presented out Honorary Treasurer, Ronnie with a delightful miniature gilded Owl as thanks for all her hard work organising the meal and the decorations. The Shed thanks go to the kitchen crew and staff at the Roleystone Country Club for hosting our event and the pleasant service they provided. Merry Christmas!

16.01.2022 On Saturday 14 December, the Shed delivered its sixteenth (thanks Roy) Cubby House to our just retired Armadale Mayor, Henry Zelones. Henry has been a member of the Roleystone Mens Community Shed for a few years now, and wanted that special present for his grandsons Christmas. Henry had it delivered in "flat pack", as he will be preparing the site himself before putting it together. What better present at Christmas than a Cubby House?

15.01.2022 A couple of weeks ago, Bear sampled some of Mick’s home-made blue cheese (yes, he was showing off again), and he said he would like to try making some himself. For a bit of moral support Bear then roped in Len to help. Anyway, Mick invited them both around to his place to spend a morning in a bit of cheese making. The activity involved a few steps, separated by long spells of sitting and waiting for the bugs that were added to the milk, to do their thing. Between 9:00am and... 1:00 pm they converted eight litres of milk into four fresh cheeses, each weighing approximately 250g (about the size of a small camembert). Upon completion Len and Bear now have two cheeses each, that are slowly maturing at their homes. Over the next two months they should turn from white to blue, at which point they will probably be consumed very quickly with a bottle of red and a few crackers. Method: 1. Warm up the milk to encourage the activity of the cultures we add (cos that's what gives cheese the taste of cheese, right?) 2. Add those cultures and let them do their thing - keeping the milk snuggly wrapped up in towels to keep it warm. 3. Add some rennet to turn the milk to curds and whey - again, keeping the milk wrapped up and warm ( no photo of rennet being added, sorry) 4. Cut the curds to separate curds and whey. 5. Drain the curds and discard the whey. 6. Chuck some salt in because cheese without salt is vile. 7. Load curds into cheese hoops and let them drain overnight. 8. Release the fresh cheese from the hoops the next day, and hand over maturing responsibility to Bear and Len. They should start to see blue mould on the surface after about 5 days, and should be acceptably tangy after about two months.

14.01.2022 This morning, Saturday 25 July, we held our first photography Show and Tell morning at the Shed. Although there only a few members were present, the idea was to road test the format of the event. Instead of a competition (so no prizes!), any member can take photographs during the week of any subject, and bring them into the Shed each Saturday. Here we will put them up for others to view. The person who took the pictures can then discuss the how/what/where with other members of the Shed. In this way we can all learn a little more about taking better photographs. You can use whatever hardware you please, phone camera, happy snapper or a full fat DSLR. Whatever pictures you take, offload them onto a USB stick and well display them on screen with our laptop and projector. Why not join in and show everyone your works of art?

13.01.2022 Saturday 29 February, Neil and Murray installed two new kiss and drop seats constructed by the Shed at the Roleystone Community College. These provide seating under shelter for pupils to use whilst awaiting their friends or parents. A very welcome addition.

13.01.2022 This morning Mick decided that it was scone time! Arriving armed with a bowl of mixed ingredients, he provided an excellent morning tea of scones with butter and jam. Not to be outdone, Peter arrived carrying a Dutch Shuffleboard he had made at home. He demonstrated to us all the very popular Dutch game, whilst trying to explain the rules (not easy to follow). We may be restricted to what we can do at present, but we don't lack imagination! Sjoelbak anyone? Very well done Mick and Peter!

11.01.2022 This months speaker for our Sundowner was Ashley Merrett, a Community Ambassador for the NBN Co. Ashley gave us a very informative synopsis of the present NBN situation, and their plans for the future. He also explained the various types of technology available to provide the service and those coming in over the next five years. He was very willing to discuss the various questions members had and offered to help with unresolved problems. He did iterate that the NBN Co. was a wholesaler, and that the customers first port of call to solve any problems was their own internet service provider. He also informed us that the new price reductions for NBN wholesale prices to providers, would come into effect on 1st November.

11.01.2022 Thursday, 27 June, a teacher and pupils from Kelscott Senior High School, paid their annual visit to the Shed as part of their normal curriculum. Included in their regular school program is How Volunteer Groups Work in the Community, and since 2015 they have visited us annually, so each years pupils can see a working community group. Upon arrival, the group were given a brief description of our facilities by Neil, followed by a question and answer session. They were then conducted on a tour around the various rooms, including Nerds Corner. Great to see them, and that Kelmscott Senior High School include such awareness in their curriculum.

11.01.2022 YOUVE GOT TO BE IN IT TO WIN IT! This Saturday, 28 September from 8:am to 12:30pm, Roleystone Mens Community Shed members will be outside the IGA supermarket in Roleystone selling raffle tickets for a wonderful landscape painting, donated by local artist Stephanie Boyle. The painting is framed and ready to hang and may be viewed in the Roleystone-Karragullen Bendigo Bank from time to time. This wonderful prize will be drawn on December 9, 2019 at the Bendigo Bank, with the result being published in the West Australian on Saturday 14 December 2019.

11.01.2022 Thanks to the generosity of artist Stephanie Boyle, we held our third painting raffle on Saturday 9 December. Unfortunately, our winner, Samya couldnt arrange to pick up the painting until last Saturday, 11 January. Ronnie, our Hon. Treasurer was on hand at the Bendigo Bank to ensure the painting was delivered safely into Samyas hands. Our sincere thanks go to Stephanie Boyle, who has been a staunch supporter of the Shed for many years. Thanks to her kindly donating paintings for us to raffle, the Shed has managed to accumulate much need funds to keep us running. Why not check her website: https://www.stephanieboyleart.com

10.01.2022 Saturday 21 December the Shed held its last social meeting at the Old School, Robin Road premises after a pre-Christmas Committee meeting. Twenty three members enjoyed fellowship and snacks before we closed the doors. The Shed will re-open next year during January only, to pack up and move to storage the equipment that we want to keep for the future. The Shed however, will continue to operated on a social basis in conjunction with the Roleystone Karragullen Seniors Club, unt...il a site can be found to erect a workshop. The Committee and members of the Shed would like to extend their thanks to Mr Raphael Maguire and his family and associates, who bought and developed the Robin Road site for over 55s, but let the Shed operate in one of the two remaining brick structures whilst development was under way. Sadly, they now have to work on the buildings, so our time at Robin Road has drawn to an end. Chapter one of our journey has been long and tortuous, but chapter two will start on Thursday 9 January 2020 at the Seniors Club, with new and diverse possibilities open to members. See you there! See more

10.01.2022 On Thursday 25 June the Shed reopened for business after a very successful Sundowner the previous Friday (19 attended). Please note we are all at least 1.5m apart, smeared in hand sanitiser and not breathing!

10.01.2022 Imagine our surprise when Mick walked into our new abode carrying a large container of cooking equipment. Whats that for? was the inquiry. Im going to bake a cake came the reply! Well, who said Shedders arent versatile. Mick cooked the best honey and almond cake I have ever tasted! Fresh from the oven - you cant beat it, as proved by the speed at which it disappeared at morning tea! With fish from Len and now Mick cooking cakes, all we need is a starter for a three course meal!

09.01.2022 Today we held the second Ambrose completion for Shed golfers. Here’s the motley crew at tee off time with Ian, Len, Roy, Laurie and David plus myself behind the camera. A great day with some very good scores! Well done to the winners, Len and Ian. At this rate we will have to start a golfing section!

08.01.2022 Saturday 12 October, the Shed once again attended the Live Lighter Perth Hills Festival held on the Karragullen oval. The weather was kind this year, and the attendance steady throughout the day. A welcome visitor to our marquee was our MLA Member for Darling Range, Alyssa Hayden, who dropped in to see what we were up to. The Shed took on its usual role of gatekeeper for those wanting to leave the grounds, but return at a later time, this being achieved by the issuing of w...ristbands. It also gave us the chance to show visitors the raffle alongside our marquee, the prize being a wonderful watercolour painting by Stephanie Boyle, a past local resident. The draw for this prize will be held on Monday 9th December at the Roleystone-Karragullen Bendigo Bank. Tickets are available at the Bank in Roleystone, at the Shed, or outside IGA on Saturday 7th December. See more

08.01.2022 On Saturday 28 January members waved goodbye to our last morning tea as we packed up the remaining boxes at the Robin Road site. Much of our equipment has been donated to the Kalamunda Men's Shed and a new one Darling Downs. The Committee felt that as we originally had the equipment donated, and that we have no time line as to when we will be able to operate machinery ourselves again, others could put it to better use. However, thanks to the Senior's Club allowing us to share their accommodation, our new residence allows us to look towards other activities for the future, such as computer training and photography. A new chapter begins!

07.01.2022 This month we held our annual AGM, which was well attended. This was followed by a very informative talk, fellowship and refreshments. There were a few changes to the Committee this year with Phil, Colin and David stepping down and Henry and Phill joining. Our guest speaker was Richard McAllister. Richard, who is the Director of Parakletos Ministries Inc. and who has recently become the Chaplain for Mens Sheds WA, gave a very enlightening talk on the causes for mens suicide and forgiveness. Judging by the fact that everyone in the room was riveted to his words and his talk well exceeded our normal time, it was very well received. The evening was concluded with some excellent food brought in by members and the consumption of the odd libation.

07.01.2022 From our Chairman - It is not our intention to over react to the Coronavirus, but considering we are all in the high risk age group and most have challenged immune systems, I have made the decision the RMCS will not assemble at the Roleystone Karragullen Seniors Club from Saturday 14th March 2020 until further notice. This decision is in Shed members best interest until we receive advice this Pandemic is under control. We do have telephones, text and email, so keep in touch. All the best and lets hope for an effective control of this virus.

07.01.2022 Friday 15 January was our first Sundowner of 2021 so we opted for a BBQ. Once again our resident BBQ chef David worked his magic on the sausages and fish fingers (for non meat eaters), only this time he was aided by Chris (bicycle Chis as he his known) and Ray. These were complimented by fried onions and bedded in bbq rolls kindly donated by Ross of Roleystone IGA. Thanks Ross! To complete the culinary experience, beverages were consumed which included some 'home made’ Scottish libation. I wonder how CC does it?

07.01.2022 After the cancellation of the Winter market due to bad weather, Sundays Spring market day was very successful with sales of over $650. A bright sunny day encouraged visitors to buy a variety of items including our signature gas bottle BBQs, as well as two very nice cutting boards and a number of our Old School Wood trinket boxes. The pictures shown are before public admission, hence the Shed members relaxed stance!

05.01.2022 Although there werent too many members at the Shed today, those attending were treated to not one, but two lots of lemonade scones with jam and cream. Yum! Our resident on site chef - Mick, came with all the ingredients, whilst Bear brought in some he had carefully prepared at home. Thanks guys for a very delightful morning tea, and keep them coming!

05.01.2022 It was full house at the Shed this morning. Ron, I think we need another biscuit run!

04.01.2022 After a long year with no Roleystone Markets due to COVID-19, Sunday 6 December saw the Christmas market day celebrate getting back to some normality. Even though the Shed has no workshops at present, we managed to show our presence with a few items for sale and some friendly chats with show attendees. A wonderful low temperature summer’s day with lots for everyone to do, made the only market day of 2020 a great success, especially for the person who won the grand prize! Thanks to Roleystone-Karragullen Bendigo Bank for all your support over the year.

04.01.2022 For this months Sundowner our guest speaker was Steve White on the subject of photography. We invited Steve back to the Shed for a second time, as his first talk on the basics of photography were very well received and very instructive. This time he continued his exploration into the world of photography with the various methods of taking good photographs, in particular with phone cameras. Very instructive. We will be meeting with Steve again in the near future to hold a practical photography session outdoors, and then discuss how they could have been improved by applying various strategies. Looking foreward to it Steve! This was followed by our usual fellowship session around snacks and beverages.

04.01.2022 After Mick’s last weeks culinary delight, Pap de Queijo, two more Shed members braved their kitchens at home with similar delightful results. This week Mick came armed with a variety of ingredients for a sweet, chocolate confection, which from now on shall be know as the the Dentists Delight! With a concoction of chocolate chips, coconut flakes and condensed milk making up the majority of the ingredients, we were in for a major artery hardening exercise. Although the pictures don’t make it look too appetising, the taste was a lot better, if somewhat chewy! Nevertheless, it all disappeared at morning tea. Once again, many thanks Mick for your bravery in the kitchen, keep them coming!

04.01.2022 This year we were once again invited back to Bunnings Armadale to run their Fathers Day evening BBQ. Bunnings supply all the food items and BBQ area, we just have to turn up and cook sausages! Although it was a somewhat wet and unpleasant night, it was well attended by the public. Thanks to the gold coin donation system, in which Bunnings allow the Shed to keep the proceeds, we raised $250. In addition Bunnings generously gave us a $200 Bunnings gift card to spend at their establishment. Not a bad evening for two hours work. Our thanks to Bunnings Armadale and all their staff for supporting our Shed.

04.01.2022 On Thursday 9th January we received the keys to the Roleystone Karragullen Seniors Club premises, as our new home for our forthcoming twice weekly meetings. During morning tea at our new venue I found myself sitting next to Roy and Colin. Now I know both of them would admit neither are high on the technology Nerd scale, so imagine my suprise when I realised Roy was explaining to Colin the mobile phone application WhatsApp. Not only did Roy explain how to use it, but managed to successfully get Colin to download it on to his phone! Both of them are taking part of our Australian Government "Be Connected" Internet program and I was so pleased with both of them that I had to take a few pictures to prove it! Well done guys.

03.01.2022 For this months Sundowner, our guest speaker was Lindsay Taylor accompanied by his partner in crime, Jim Maslin. Jim is a member of the Kalamunda Mens Shed. Lindsay gave us a great talk on the trials and tribulations of restoring of a 1903 Renault Voiturette car, the car that laid down the format for all future car design. Last year they entered it in the London to Brighton Vintage Car rally, but unfortunately it only made it as far as crossing Westminster Bridge. However, a lift in a van and unloading it just short of the finishing line in Brighton, saw the evolution complete. From there they shipped it to Paris for some P.R. shots around the city and by the Eiffel tower. A very interesting talk by Lindsay, with additional details by Jim, provided a very entertaining evening.

03.01.2022 Hes Done It Again! This Thursday Mick surpassed his previous culinary manifestations by making a three ingredients chocolate brownie (lots of Nutella). This was fortuitous as we were welcoming two new members, Ilyaas and Gabriel. As you can see from the picture, the brownie disappeared very quickly, the last four slices going soon after the picture was taken! Well done Mick - and keep them coming!

03.01.2022 Just before Christmas 2019 (when the world was sane), Henry purchased Roys last Cubby house built at the Shed. We duly delivered it to Henrys home in kit form ready to assemble it, but Henry told us to leave it as it was as he was going to build a raised platform for it to sit on. Well, as you can see, he wasnt joking! Well done Henry! I did ask him how he managed to get the roof on as it was a four person lift when we delivered it. He replied that he had taken all the tin off, fitted the roof frame and then replaced the sheets of tin one by one in situ. Once assembled, Henry and his Grandson decided to repaint it inside and out, the outside to blend in with Henrys home and the inside as his Grandson was very liberal with the paint! Fantastic job Henry and Grandson.

02.01.2022 Saturday morning is usually very quiet at the Shed, but for the six of us who attended last Saturday, we were treated to another of Mick’s wonderful recipes. This time it was Russian Sticky Buns. All I can say is that all of the buns were gone as soon as morning tea was over! Many thanks Mick for another culinary success. I think we may have to consider a larger cooker in our new premises!

02.01.2022 Thursday 17 December we held our last function for 2020, the End of Year BBQ. After what has been a very turbulent year, it was good to get together and sample a few snags from our BBQ specialist David! Thanks also to John for making sure that all the members, and a few ex-members were invited along for the evening. We wish all our readers a Very Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year for 2021. Surely it’s got to be better than 2020!

02.01.2022 Our resident Chef was in the kitchen again today! This time our treat was muffins, a thirty year old family recipe.. Mick and his wife thought it to have been lost, until they recently had a clear out and came across it again. Armed with his pre-prepared mix and a pile of baking cases, Mick set about cooking our morning tea treat. Judging by the speed that they disappeared on Thursday, Shed members thought they were very good. Unfortunately the author was on a restricted diet and couldnt sample more of Micks culinary wonders! Never mind, well done once again.
