24.01.2022 We now have flu vaccinations in stock. If you would like a flu shot, call 93711100 and make an appointment to get it done. Here is some info on flu and about the strains that this years vaccination covers: Influenza (flu) is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads easily from person to person through coughing, sneezing and close contact.... Unlike a cold, symptoms such as fever, sore throat and muscle aches develop suddenly with flu and last about a week. In some cases, severe illness and complications such as pneumonia and bronchitis can develop, which can result in hospitalisation and even death. The flu can also make some existing medical conditions worse. The flu virus can be especially dangerous for elderly people, pregnant women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and very young children, as well as for people with underlying medical conditions. Annual vaccination is the best way of preventing the flu and any associated illness. You should get the flu shot every year because the flu virus is constantly changing. Every year, the flu vaccine changes too, so it protects against the flu strains which are most likely to be around during that winter. Children can begin to be immunised against the flu from six months of age. Children aged 6 months to under 9 years of age require two doses, at least four weeks apart in the first year they receive the vaccine. While two doses in the first year are recommended, one dose does provide some protection and is preferable to receiving no doses. One dose of influenza vaccine is required in subsequent years. A single dose of influenza vaccine is given to all children aged nine years and over. It is free for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children aged 6 months to <5 years Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander persons aged 15 years All persons aged 65 years All persons aged 6 months who have certain medical conditions which increase the risk of influenza disease complications; for example, severe asthma, lung or heart disease, low immunity or diabetes (refer to Table 3). Pregnant women (during any stage of pregnancy). The influenza virus strains included in the 2017 seasonal influenza vaccines are: A (H1N1): an A/Michigan/45/2015 (H1N1)pdm09* like virus A (H3N2): an A/Hong Kong/4801/2014 (H3N2) like virus B: a B/Brisbane/60/2008 like virus B: a B/Phuket/3073/2013 like virus

23.01.2022 Meningococcal Vaccine Menveo Back in stock and available for children aged 2months and up The vaccine was approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for use in children as young as two months old earlier in the year, however stocks were low. Families can now readily access the protection this vaccine affords as stocks become more readily available. What is the MENVEO vaccine? MENVEO is a combination vaccine, providing protection against strains A, C, W and Y. ... MENVEO is not available on the National Immunisation Program (NIP) or the Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme (PBS). The vaccine is available as a private prescription only Why it worth immunising against? Meningococcal disease is a frightening but rare bacterial infection that mostly affects infants and young children, can be deadly within hours if not recognised and treated in time. What is Meningococcal? Meningococcal disease is an acute bacterial infection caused by the meningococcus bacteria. Symptoms of meningococcal disease may include sudden onset of fever, cold hands and feet, limb/joint pain, nausea and vomiting, headache, neck stiffness, dislike of bright lights and a pin-prick rash changing to large red-purple blotches that dont disappear with gentle pressure on the skin. A rash does not always appear or it may occur late in the disease. Babies and very young children may also experience irritability, have difficulty waking, rapid or laboured breathing, diarrhoea, a high-pitched cry or refuse to eat. Vaccination is the only effective way to prevent meningococcal There are six main strains that most commonly cause meningococcal disease (A, B, C, W, X & Y). In Australia, strains B, W and Y currently cause the majority of meningococcal cases. Vaccines are available in Australia to help protect against the main disease-causing strains.
