23.01.2022 Hi friends, My name's Mickayla, I'm a naturopath by trade. I work here in my business and with Wholelife Pharmacy & Health Foods Newmarket. I love eating good food and using nutrition with clients to make them feel supported too ... I also love my herbs and how individualised they can be, especially because every human is different. On my days off you can find me at the markets, cooking, relaxing or just filling my cup

20.01.2022 GREEN TEA Green tea is so we'll known for its antioxidant properties, but did you know it can promote fat loss through increasing body temperature? Green tea has thermogenic properties and promotes fat oxidation beyond that explained by its caffeine content per se. It's high antioxidant components counterbalance the oxidative stress naturally caused by fat metabolism. (Which is really cool).... So if you're on a health journey and have already cleaned up your diet and begun an exercise routine - consider adding green tea to your morning. You can even swap your coffee for green tea if you're feeling super motivated! 1-3 cups per day, over time, will promote weight management. Pro-tip - use loose leaf organic to avoid plastic teabags and sprays. #greentea #weightloss #thermogenics

16.01.2022 "There is growing evidence that dietary effects, which can alter the expression and control of genes, might even have been a driving force for human evolution..." Did you know that evidence has shown your diet determines your health more so than the genetics you were born with? Obviously there are some cases where genetics cannot be changed, but those that can be switched on or off respond to nutrition and stress. ... In the case of obesity, while one's genes can make you more susceptible - your diet is the on or off switch. Your DIET determines your destiny here. Several studies have shown that in obese patients, it's more often the environmental diet that is passed down that leads to the obesity. Nature vs nurture? Definitely nurture. How cool is that? You have all the power on your fork. Whole plant based diets have proven again and again to virtually take away the risk of heart disease, diabetes T2, and obesity.

16.01.2022 The simple meal building tool that gives you the benefits without the hastle. This can apply to everyone, not just diagnosed diabetics.

13.01.2022 Herbal teas Herbal teas are a valuable way to delivery a therapeutic herb dose when taste or age is an issue. It's also super handy for increasing water intake! Just make sure you cover your brewing teas to keep the essential oils in! Very important with herbs like chamomile or peppermint. Consider teas as an alternative for: kids, dysphagia, colds & flus, and old age. ... Who doesn't love a cuppa?

13.01.2022 In case you're curious as to how your gut bugs change as we grow up This was super interesting for me to research, the topic of human microbiomes is enormous!

13.01.2022 I'm glad your picking the banana over processed biscuits but I still need you to be aware - it's still metabolised into sugar chains. It's still spiking your insulin and blood sugar. To slow it down you need to consume these quick energy foods with protein and/or fibre! Berries are one of the fruits that contain sufficient fibre to not be too much of an issue. Have some psyllium husks quickly, or add seeds to your meal, or flax meal, or eat the brown rice over the white. Th...ese are high fibre foods. Did you know you need to aim for 30-40 grams of #fibre every single day? 1 tbsp of flaxmeal (7g) has 2g of fibre. To put it in perspective: 100g brown rice has 1.8g fibre 100g white #rice has 0.4g fibre. THAT'S 1.4G DIFFERENCE! #nutritionmatters #nutrition

12.01.2022 How can you help yourself heal quickly after surgery? (Specifically, oral surgery - when it's hard to eat)

12.01.2022 IRON FROM PLANTS Plant-based iron, or non-heme iron is available in lots of leafy greens and legumes, among others. However, it is not as bioavailable as heme (from animals) iron. Which basically means you do not absorb as much as you would from an animal source; they have already done the hard yards of absorbing non-heme iron. The bioavailability of iron is approximately 14% to 18% from mixed diets that include substantial amounts of meat, seafood, and vitamin C and 5% ...to 12% from vegetarian diets. That's a pretty significant amount considering the RDI for menstruating women is 18mg and 8mg for men. So, if you're big on plant food but not so into being iron deficient - here's your heads up. Combining iron rich plant foods with vitamin C and avoiding foods that bind to iron around meals is essential to ensure better bioavailability (= better absorption). See the next image for some of the foods or components that bind to iron. Iron is important for delivering oxygen around the body, supporting neurotransmitter production (anxiety is a symptom of anaemia), and DNA synthesis. So it's really important. Always get your bloods checked if your feeling bodily and mentally fatigued. Check those iron stores as well as serum iron. See more

12.01.2022 Sensitivities to certain foods can create an immune response in the gut. It's just enough to create a small set of non-irritating symptoms, maybe some brain fog or changing bowels habits. However, constantly consuming foods that alert the immune system and weaken the barrier between your intestines and your insides (we are a donut, after all) can create so much brain fog that you think you're loosing your mind rather than eating too much dairy/gluten/nightshades. If you do...n't feel like you're operating at optimal levels, it's time to assess whether you're ready for change. Book an appointment. Get ready for some adjustments. Create an environment and lifestyle that suits your individual health better. Feel better I'm available at Newmarket Wholelife on Wednesdays, or Saturday - Monday Online.

10.01.2022 Postpartum depression - how to help, what therapies are available?

09.01.2022 Creating magic . Don't forget to book your appointments! Saturday 10th only has three spots left for online or in person consults

08.01.2022 Liquorice A nourishing adrenal tonic, supporting a healthy stress response from the top down. This herb is beautiful for recovery, both mentally and from acute illness. It's also indicated where there are significant sugar cravings as it supports blood sugar regulation (a common symptom in the chronically stressed). It's also a great anti-inflammatory for coating mucous membranes (think airways, throat, intestines) so can be added in mixes for kids with colds or ulcers - bonus is that it tastes good! The catch for some is that it doesn't mix well with high blood pressure. This is because of its suppression of the reninaldosterone system which controls blood pressure.

06.01.2022 Having a bomb server makes choosing meals super easy Also sorry for spilling water everywhere

05.01.2022 Teas are available! Limited quantity for this coming launch. Please message for purchase. Postage is a flat $5 for QLD.

04.01.2022 Reminder that if you're feeling stressed or noticing yourself becoming easily irritated/sad, a quick 20 minutes sitting outside just staring at some green stuff has beneficial physiological (chemical) effects. Crazy right? This is at the Mt Cootha botanic gardens where this friend kept coming back to visit me #foresttherapy #greenisgood #nature

04.01.2022 If 95% of serotonin is produced in the gut, there should really be a saying like "happy gut, happy mood" or "happy gut, happy life"... Which one do you like best?

03.01.2022 Rehmannia glutinosa A traditionally Chinese herb, studies show that Rehmannia glutinosa and its active principles possess wide actions, such as antipyretic, adaptogen, anti-inflammatory, antihaemorrhagic (aids clotting mechanism) and an adrenal tonic. This means naturopaths may use Rehmannia in chronically depleted patients, tired and wired patients, menopause, osteoarthritis, some immune conditions, some kidney conditions - perhaps in a cardiovascular mix. Research into R...ehmannia is still ongoing, but the evidence of it's actions has gone on for centuries. See anything that's you on the list? Feel free to email me if you have questions :) *not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding.*

02.01.2022 Even if you take nothing from my consults or decide against a treatment plan, you're still better off I know that because we'll have talked about things you may never have thought of, and made connections between choices and reactions you may have not connected before. Some clients come in never having noticed their poop changes before! Blindly going day-to-day without being aware of yourself doesn't allow you to live a full and present life. It's also about #mindfull...ness and becoming more empowered with your health. I know you'll be more conscious, more aware of your health and in the end that means more than any treatment plan

01.01.2022 Sources of calcium Not only is calcium intake important for bone health, it's important in cellular contraction and carrying messages around the body There are many sources of calcium, google can tell you that, but in order to make informed decisions you should know what else you're choosing/ avoiding when you choose a calcium source. ... This is just an example of two possible sources. This doesn't mean you can't eat both, but if you asked me to compare which is better, I will tell you it's kale. There was a bit of a rumour that the phosphorus in milk also prevented complete absorption of calcium, but this is only if you're diet is too high in phosphate. Plus kale is cruciferous vegetable which supports the liver as well as making delicious chips Kale also has plenty of phyto-nutrients which give it that deep green colour - these are anti-inflammatory and antioxidant components. To support good calcium levels and bone health: Vitamin D increases storage of calcium, along with vitamin K #foodforthewin #plantbased
