25.01.2022 Media Release 24 August 2020 Rotary Club inducts new members in person and via Zoom... The global pandemic has made it difficult for service clubs to operate as usual but the Rotary Club of Albury Hume has risen to the challenge. August is membership month for Rotary International and on Wednesday 26 August, 43 years to the day since it was chartered, the Albury-based club will induct 3 new members, 2 in person, one via Zoom. This will be the first actual meeting for 22 weeks because of COVID-19, recent meetings having been conducted via Zoom for those able to join. President of the Albury Hume Rotary Club, Margaret McDonald said, We are absolutely delighted to welcome three new members, affectionately known as the triple J’s as all their names begin with a J Julie, Jackie and Jane! The three wonderful ladies have all recently relocated or returned to the border and all have Rotary connections through family and are keen to become more involved in community service. Our club raises significant funds through bbq’s at major events and work at football gates but this year that’s all come to an abrupt halt so this Friday we’re running a Trivia night via Zoom and our members are hosting family and friends in their own homes. This fund-raising activity was actually the suggestion of one of the members we’re inducting on Wednesday so I’m looking forward to more of her ideas in the future! Mrs McDonald said that the Rotary theme for the year is Rotary Opens Opportunities and this has even greater relevance as the club adapts to social interaction and formal meetings online. Last week we had a guest speaker from Japan who we had hosted as an exchange student in 1979, Mrs McDonald said. We’re part of a great organisation and we’re so pleased to be introducing new people and finding new ways to serve our community. Ends Note: The Rotary Club of Albury Hume will meet at The Mantra, Smollett St at 1pm on 26 August. For further information contact Greg Aplin, mobile 0428 600 343.
25.01.2022 On the longest night of the year the Winter Solstice event is normally when our community comes together physically to be enlightened by speakers and entertaine...d by our performers. It is with the warmest of hearts that we extend our gratitude to everyone for coming on this exciting new virtual journey with us and giving us your support. This is the first time that we have organised our event this way so your support and patience is greatly appreciated when we go live later tonight. Don’t forget to set yourselves up early, cook your winter recipes beforehand and be watching our Facebook page live from 6pm. If you would like to see the programme, it can be found here: http://www.wintersolstice.org.au/programme-winter-solstice/ Let’s come together and shine a light on mental health and suicide.
24.01.2022 Media Release 6 July 2020 Rotary Club of Albury-Hume presents scholarship to UNSW Rural Clinical School student ... The Rotary Club of Albury-Hume will present their annual Dr John McDonald Medical Scholarship at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Rural Clinical School, Albury campus, on Tuesday 7 July. The scholarship is valued at $2,000 and is designed to assist in the purchase of essential textbooks and equipment. The first scholarships were awarded in 2013. The recipient of the scholarship this year is Kyle Green who was inspired to study medicine as a result of his mother’s ill health. His aim is to be part of a medical health team which reaches out to vulnerable people. The presentation of the Dr John McDonald Scholarship will take place on Tuesday 7 July at 11am at the UNSW Campus at the Albury Hospital. Head of Campus, Dr. Mark Norden, will be in attendance and Margaret McDonald, widow of Dr. John McDonald and newly inducted President of the Rotary Club of Albury-Hume, will present the cheque.
