25.01.2022 President's Message: June 2020 Hello Everyone, We are now in winter and the end of another Rotary year is at hand.... Well, what a year it has been. COVID -19 has dominated the news for much of 2020. Even the tragic bushfires in January seem so far away. COVID -19 has changed the world and Rotary. Our club has responded to the pandemic by launching on 22nd May "Connecting Manningham". This project will reach out to our community by bringing the people of Manningham together, promote local businesses and produce programs that will enrich the lives of everyone. We are partnering with Manningham Rotaract for this program. Well done to Vicki and Rod from the community committee for leading this project. I believe that Connecting Manningham will have a huge impact in our community and will extend well beyond the COVID -19 pandemic. Continue reading at: https://bit.ly/2YflxsA

25.01.2022 We're now in full swing with our regular meetings, with 23 participants last Wednesday. As usual, we started off with a toast to Rotary International and the People of Australia, and almost everyone came prepared with their favourite beverage! The rest of the evening went as per our normal agenda: A Toast to Rotary International and the People of Australia... President's Opening Remarks Health and Welfare Reports and Updates Golden Moments Heads and Tails It was great to see everyone in good spirits, and we even had our regular round of "Heads and Tails" at the end. Congrats to Brian Negus on winning the booby prize! If you would like to be our guest at one of our regular meetings, please request an invite from [email protected].

25.01.2022 Ah, the Good Ole Days! John Mudgeway shares his special collection of Rotary ties, just to remind us of the "good ole days": Once upon a time, men wore bits of rag around their necks.... They were called neckties. Or just ties. Nobody really knew what their function was. Some reckoned it was to wipe spilled food off your shirt. Rotary men wore ties too, with an annual model change (shades of General Motors under the guidance of Alfred P. Sloan, Jr.) For more images of John's Rotary tie collection, go to https://bit.ly/2HuYLIr

25.01.2022 The Rotary Club of Templestowe received a District Recognition again this year. Thats four years in a row!

25.01.2022 Presidents Message: April Before writing this April report, I was having a look at what was written in the March report and was amazed how much has changed in just one month due to the Corona virus. All the events which we were looking forward to last month have all been cancelled and the club meetings have also been suspended. ... Our 43rd Birthday celebrations were cancelled, as too was the District Conference, our Bunnings Sausage Sizzles + Shine on Awards. Business Excellence Awards was cancelled. Our Primary School Speech competitions have also been cancelled. We will though, continue with Pride of Workmanship Awards, but in a modified form. No one knows how long this situation is going to last, but once it is over, we intend to double up on our celebrations. However, we are still planning for the Manningham Family Festival which is on November 15th, 2020. To keep our club active, we have initiated a weekly meeting newsletter that is based on how our weekly meetings are run. Our first email meeting newsletter went out to members about a month ago. It started with a virtual toast to RI and the people of Australia, (hope that you all had your glasses filled for that) and then continued with health and welfare, reports, golden moments and announcements. It was a great read and is one of the ways members can stay in contact with one another. We have now graduated to video-based club meetings which has been a great way to stay in touch with one another. Our Board meetings are also now by by video-conferencing that was set up by Felix. During this Corona crisis, we also need to be aware of others and Rosina has put in an urgent request from Doncare to help supply some key staple food items: * Canned Tuna * Pasta * Pasta sauce * Long life milk * Cereal Tinned Tomatoes If you can help, please call Doncare on 9856 1500 or contact Rosina. So, to everyone, keep yourselves fit and healthy, take care of others with social distancing and be generous to those in need. Regards, Brian Tyedin

25.01.2022 We have had some great speakers at our meetings during March Helen Jurcevic (Manningham Womens Friendship group), Carmen Stenta (member talk) and Ken Fraser at our Footy Launch night. As well as that we had a club assembly. The Footy Launch was a fantastic night of nostalgia of what football was like in the 60s with stories from Ken Fraser about Ted Whitten, Ron Barassi and other football legends. 24.01.2022 President's Message: November 2020 Welcome to the November Report. Yes, it’s only about 6 weeks to go before we can say goodbye to 2020.... But behind the masks, more people are beginning to smile and look forward to better things in 2021. Big changes have taken place in November. In the USA, we have a new president and a new beginning. In Victoria, we are coming out of lockdown and restrictions are being eased. In the Rotary club of Templestowe, there is a new chair, as I will now represent our club for the next 4 months. 18.01.2022 My name is Tiffany Diamond and I attended the 2020 Year 12 National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) Program with Templestowe Rotary Club (I'm on the right of the group photo). The NYSF is a non-for-profit organisation which runs programs to encourage young people in their passion for science, technology, engineering and maths. I heard of the NYSF program through a friend in early 2019 and as I have a great interest in science, I decided to do more research into what it is. 15.01.2022 "Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other" So goes a quote from the speech that John F. Kennedy prepared for delivery in Dallas, on that fateful day in 1963. Learning is just one of the benefits of being a member of a Rotary club. We learn...to lead. ... Leading volunteers where you are a peer among equals can be some of the most challenging and rewarding experiences. This Wednesday evening, we will take a journey through the learning opportunities that we have through Rotary International we will focus on the Rotary Leadership Course which is run in our Rotary District. This meeting will be held through Zoom on Wednesday August 19th at 7.30pm, and guests are most welcomed to join in. If you would like an invite, please drop an email with your details to our Secretary at [email protected]. See you then! #rotary #peopleofaction #manningham #connectingmanningham

15.01.2022 "At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, We will remember them" Our local Remembrance Day service was held today at Templestowe Memorial Park (corner of Foote and High Street).... This memorial park is of special significance to our club. In 1990, we worked with the Council and the Templestowe Returned Services League to relocate the First World War Memorial from its original site in Anderson St to the current location. The Council had renamed the reserve "Services Memorial Park" to honour the men and women of the armed forces who fought in all wars since Federation, and also to honour members of local service organisations who have contributed to the quality of life in our city. Every year on ANZAC Day, we run the local Schools ANZAC Service to give local primary and secondary students an opportunity to be a part of the remembrance. Members of the public are welcomed to participate - you can find out more details at https://templestowerotary.org.au/anzac-service. #lestweforget2020 #manningham #connectingmanningham #Rotary #PeopleOfAction

14.01.2022 Presidents Message: July 2020 Hello to all our Rotary Colleagues and friends. Saturday 4 July saw a changing of guard for the Club, celebrating the leadership of President Brian Tyedin during 2019/20, and welcoming the Three Musketeers, Brian Negus, Brian Tyedin and Felix Wong as Co-Presidents for 2020/21. At the end of last year, we found ourselves in difficult circumstances, with a vacancy for President. So, this year we will have three Presidents, with one of us serving ...at a time, but all three of us engaged for the year. We as a club have had to adjust to a new normal, and this has presented challenges for all of us. Despite this we have kicked many goals during the year with the Club receiving a District Citation and a Rotary International Citation for our projects and, communication and promotion with our new website. 13.01.2022 On the eve of ANZAC Day, we are saddened that for the first time in almost 30 years, we are unable to conduct this remembrance service at the Templestowe Memorial Park. The Schools ANZAC Service has been run by the Rotary Club of Templestowe since 1990. About 800 children from a range of local Primary and Secondary schools normally participate in the event this year where wreaths are placed on the memorial. The program includes a prominent citizen giving an address, the p...laying of the last post, a military catafalque party and flag raising. This event is usually held a few days before ANZAC Day and has provided generations of local school children with a firsthand opportunity to commemorate all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. This service is a proud tradition with our club, and generations of school children have benefitted from attending. The venue is Templestowe Memorial Park at the corner of Foote Street and High Street. If you are passing by the Memorial on one of your evening walks this week, please take a moment to soak in the Memorial Park and remember those who have served and died for peace.

10.01.2022 Keeping a local ANZAC Day tradition going For the past 29 years, the Rotary Club of Templestowe has conducted a Schools Anzac Service involving up to 32 schools from within the Manningham City area. This has now grown to include up to 800 students and teachers. Due to Covid-19, the Schools Anzac Service scheduled to be held on Thursday 23rd April '20 was cancelled. The solitary figure in the photo is a student from East Doncaster Secondary College who placed a wreath at the ...Templestowe Memorial Park on behalf of the College. 09.01.2022 Transforming lives through life-saving surgeries Join us on August 12th (Wednesday evening) as we hear from PDG Harold Sharpe OAM about the amazing life-saving and dignity-restoring work that Rotary International does with children in the Pacific Region. Harold is currently Chairman of ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children) which brings children from the Pacific Region to Australia and New Zealand hospitals for surgeries that are not available to them in their home c...ountry. Harold joined Rotary in 1977 and is currently a member of the Rotary Club of Crows Nest in Sydney. Previously employed as the Director of Community Relations and Marketing at the Royal NSW Institute for Deaf and Blind Children, Harold organised the Tunnel Walk and Day of Celebration held in conjunction with the Opening of the Sydney Harbour Tunnel in 1992. This involved over 2000 Rotarians from Sydney who acted as Marshalls and Volunteers on the day an event which saw 350,000 people walk through the tunnel on that day, and raised over $750,000 for the Charity. Harold held the position of Club President of Crows Nest in 1996 and Governor for the district in 2002-03. He was awarded an OAM in June 2020 for Service to the Community and Charity Initiatives. This meeting will be held through Zoom on Wednesday August 5th at 7.30pm, and guests are most welcomed to join in. 09.01.2022 We did it! So proud to be a part of this decades-long battle against polio by Rotarians worldwide. On August 25th, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that transmission of the wild poliovirus has officially been stopped in all 47 countries of its African region.... Now that the African region is free of wild poliovirus, five of WHOs six regions, representing more than 90 percent of the worlds population, are now free of the disease. Polio caused by the wild virus is still endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is living proof that strong commitment, coordination, and perseverance amongst people of goodwill can rid the world of deadly and crippling viruses. There are lessons to be learned here! Interested in knowing more? Head over to www.endpolio.org where you can find out about what Rotarians are doing about this, and how you can contribute to eradicating polio forever. #endpolionow #Rotary #PeopleOfAction #manningham #connectingmanningham
