22.01.2022 More playground news - the Rotary Overseas Recycled Playground program continues. Since the start of our last lockdown period in July, the Rotary Club of Ivanhoe has held two sets of playground materials in temporary local storage, courtesy of City of Banyule. We had been unable to transfer these to the shipping container at the West Footscray warehouse due to the very tight restrictions on non-essential movement. These components came from two large playgrounds which were be...ing upgraded by Banyule Council in East Ivanhoe and Macleod. At last! Over two days, Friday and Saturday 13th and 14th November, we were able to use the van from the Rotary Donations In Kind warehouse to collect the two large loads of playground components, take them to the warehouse, and load them into the container for shipping this week to Sri Lanka, along with sets of materials from about 6 other playground locations around Melbourne. This was a great effort by a very committed team of Rotarians over the two days, and we are very happy to see these playgrounds head off to Sri Lanka for a whole new life in schools and other venues there. Sincere thanks are also due to the City of Banyule and its various contractors, who have continued to give generous support to the playground recycling program.

22.01.2022 For lovers of birds of prey - this is for you . Enjoy!

22.01.2022 The playground recycling challenge for Ivanhoe Rotary Club this month was at the Hakea Reserve in Watsonia, where the old playground was being removed, in preparation for replacement with a new playground. With a small but dedicated group of Rotarians, working with James Van Leeuwen from Aspace, the old unit was dismantled today, loaded into the Rotary DIK (Donations in Kind) van, and taken to the Rotary warehouse in Footscray where it was loaded into waiting shipping containers. Along with a number of other playgrounds already in the containers, it is intended to ship these for re-establishment in schools in Nepal in the near future.

20.01.2022 Hat Day and Sausage Sizzles supporting mental health research on World Mental Health Day, 10th October 2020 This year’s World Mental Health Day comes at a time when our daily lives have been disrupted considerably as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The past months have brought many challenges for our community, especially for health-care workers, for students and their parents, for workers whose livelihoods are threatened, for people caught in poverty or in fragile humanit...arian settings, and for people with mental health conditions, many of whom are experiencing even greater social isolation than before. Investment in mental health programmes at the national and international levels is now more important than it has ever been. Australian Rotary Health is one of the largest independent funders of mental health research in Australia, using the funds it raises since the year 2000 to provide mental health research grants, PhD scholarships, and post-doctoral fellowships to focus on mental health research across Australia. Hat Day on 10th October is a project of Rotary Clubs across Australia to focus on raising funds to support the essential work of Australian Rotary Health. The Rotary Club of Ivanhoe is supporting ARH through its virtual sausage sizzle, partnered by Bunnings Warehouse Fairfield store, with all funds raised going to the ARH mental health research programs. Even if you are missing your weekly Bunnings Sausage Sizzle in these COVID lockdown times, you can still donate to this important Please join us in lifting the lid on mental illness, and make a donation by clicking below. #ivanhoerotaryvirtualsausagesizzle #ivanhoerotary #virtualsausagesizzle https://sausage-sizzle-ivanhoe.raisley.com/ Bunnings Warehouse Fairfield has generously offered support for our virtual sausage sizzle by donating a Ryobi Drill Driver Kit, worth $269, which we will use as a prize for a lucky winner to be drawn from all donors at the end of the month. Let’s lift the lid on mental illness!

20.01.2022 At our Club meeting last week, it was so good to have a presentation on the Hope Springs community by John Rumble and Jiaying Jiang (JJ). Hope Springs is a mental health ministry of the Banyule group of Uniting Churches, providing both a service and a community for people in need in the Banyule area, currently with about 110 people on its books. The Ivanhoe Rotary Club has maintained an interest in Hope Springs for quite a few years, and for us, this presentation was a rea...lly good opportunity to gain a better understanding as to how the program is operating in these difficult times of COVID lockdowns and isolation. We were encouraged by the description of the processes of using electronic communications to keep many of their activities operating, although with some challenges to keep on touch with some people who don’t have such good access to technology. Hope Springs is launching an online art exhibition today, September 30th, with the theme boredom sparks creativity. Search Hope Springs Heidelberg on Facebook or via the web to find the details about the program and the art exhibition.

16.01.2022 Saturday, 24th October - World Polio Day We are so close to eradication of polio from the world. While the current COVID pandemic has been a major focus in our lives this year, the essential work towards eradication of polio has continued in the face of this year’s added difficulties and challenges. This work is still so important, and we can’t allow the valuable gains we have made in recent years to slip away. Our contributions to assist this work are still needed to support the essential immunizations and surveillance. Donations for this program can be made through Rotary via the website www.endpolio.org.

15.01.2022 This World Environment Day, 5th June 2021, is a very opportune time to look at the role of Rotary International, and individual Rotary Clubs, in the critical challenges for the future of our local and global environments. Earlier in 2021, Rotary International defined Supporting the Environment as one of its key Areas of Focus, to complement its six other key focus areas (Basic Education & Literacy; Water, Sanitation & Hygiene; Maternal &Child Health; Peace & Conflict Preven...tion / Resolution; Community & Economic Development; and Disease Prevention & Treatment). Many Rotary Clubs already have a good history of undertaking and supporting environmental projects. This focus at a Rotary International level now gives greater impetus to our environmental works, and will allow RI funding to start flowing to support local and wider environmental projects. The Rotary Club of Ivanhoe is enthusiastic about this increased attention by RI to support our environment, given the wide range of environmental challenges we all face at local, national and global levels. We are keen to develop actions for environmental support at our own local level. Initially, the club is working with Local Government and community groups to develop projects to benefit our local environment, especially in relation to restore some of our local ecosystems and native vegetation. In the longer term, we aim to look at our individual and community activities to see what we might be able to achieve, as a community, in reducing waste, improving our energy use efficiency, minimizing our carbon footprints, and improving the resilience of our native ecosystems, vegetation and wildlife. World Environment Day is an opportunity for us all to reflect on what we can do to support our environment.

15.01.2022 Martin was our Guest Speaker a few weeks ago. These are his brand new chicks from his Breedkng Program. If you would like to support this work and Sanctuary, Beverley can provide you with his bank details for financial support.

14.01.2022 A bright and sunny winter morning, and another playground dismantled for the Rotary Overseas Recycled Playgrounds program. Today, we had six members of the Ivanhoe Rotary Club working in partnership with City of Darebin and John Arena and his crew from Arena Gardens to dismantle a playground being replaced in Johnson Park, Northcote. This materials were taken for temporary storage prior to later despatch overseas, possibly to Nepal. It’s always good for us to work with John and his crew.

13.01.2022 Our Rotary Club enjoyed a visit from Martin and his Birds of prey last year. Martin has an amazing way with his birds he Rehabilitates.

12.01.2022 The Alphington Community Centre held its Christmas Makers Market on Saturday morning, with a good range of stalls, and many families and others of the local community attending. The Ivanhoe Rotary Club was pleased to be able to support this local community event, with several of our members volunteering to assist in running the sausage sizzle throughout the morning. For us, it was a great way to assist a local group and to talk about Rotary and the club with quite a number of people of the local community.

07.01.2022 Progress in playground renewal - Ivanhoe Park. As part of the replacement program of the City of Banyule, this playground was dismantled in early July by the Rotary Club of Ivanhoe, in partnership with Citywide, the Council’s contractors. The playground components have been placed in temporary storage awaiting relaxation of the COVID restrictions before transport to Sri Lanka. In the meantime, Banyule City has installed its new playground on the East Ivanhoe site, and it is n...ow in active use. These photos show the new playground now in use in Ivanhoe Park, as well as the dismantling of the original playground equipment, and the components in temporary storage awaiting moving to the container for transport to Sri Lanka. Hopefully, we will be able complete this story later in the new year with pictures of the playground after transport and installation at its final destination in Sri Lanka. See more
