19.01.2022 There are various Rotary Clubs & Rotarians across Australia partnering with ‘Days For Girls’ to support projects that create lasting change for girls & women ac...ross the globe. Here at ‘Rotary Passport Melbourne’ we are so pleased to have ‘Days For Girls Australia’ Victorian Coordinator & DfGs Australia Board member, Carolyn Walker, as a Charter member of RPM. RPM’s Charter President, Maria Hicks, is also the ‘Days For Girls International’ Cambodian Coordinator. At RPM’s Zoom Meetup on Sat, 6 January will be inducting Mary Connelly-Gale who is ‘DfGs Australia’ Executive Manager as a new member to our global club. Such wonderful news as we develop projects together in 2021 to make a difference to so many across the world. A focus for DFGs Australia this year will be delivering product to Timor Leste & the Pacific Nations & also developing on the ground teams of educators & hopefully slowly developing sustainable enterprises in these parts of the world. RPM will be developing a new project this year to help DfGs create a sustainable Enterprise in Battambang, Cambodia. The community need is definitely there as confirmed to us by the local people, including the RC of Sangke Battambang. Maybe your Club or individual Rotarians may be interested in helping RPM members establish this project to improve lives in rural villages in this part of the world or somewhere else. Please get in touch if this of interest to you or your Club. RC of North Balwyn, Jane Pennington, is also involved as we develop the DfGs partnership further, as D9800 DfGs Global Advisor. A resource for all Rotarians to refer to if wanting to find out more about how DfGs could partner with their International WASH or Education projects in a community / country of focus. Or perhaps you would like to join a DfGs team here in Victoria who are making sanitary kits to be sent to places around the world. Again Jane can help you connect. Yes, today Rotary International has a strong vision to develop partnerships & to create Resource Networks to see bigger, better, more impactful & sustainable projects soar. In 2021 we will ‘Open Opportunities’ to do just that. Our developing partnership with ‘Days For Girls’ is just one of those wonderful opportunities we have here in D9800. United we will create lasting change as we work together to change one life at a time, multiples times over when we collaborate together.

10.01.2022 "Don't be ashamed to cry, Let me see you through, 'cause I've seen the dark side too." Today is #RUOKDay, and what better day to launch Scrub Choir 2.0, with... over 400 RMH Staff members singing "I'll stand by you" by The Pretenders. Led by Music Therapy Director Dr Emma O'Brien OAM, the Scrub Choir has been an opportunity for staff at the RMH to take a moment out of their busy day, or after a shift on the COVID-19 wards to unwind and reflect. Many people who participated found it a therapeutic experience. Some highlights of this latest instalment include some of our RMH Doctors in a string quartet, Nurse Kathy who leads the song in AUSLAN, and many of our interpreters and nurses sharing their native language. We hope you enjoy our gift to you today. And please, look after yourself. Help and support is available. Please call Lifeline on 13 11 14 for immediate assistance. In an emergency call 000.

09.01.2022 Here's the highlights reel from our final outbounder Instagram takeover from 2020! Elisa Muscat, who is sponsored by Beaudesert Rotary Club, spent her year on e...xchange in Switzerland, hosted by the Rotary Club of Entlebuch. Elisa arrived home a couple of days ago, and is now quarantining in Brisbane, but before she left the snow-laden lands of Switzerland, she shared some of her exchange highlights with us in her takeover, including: - some amazing photos of the Swiss scenery - undoubtedly one of the most beautiful countries in the world. - sharing the challenge that all exchange students face when starting school in a new country - making new friends! Made extra challenging when you are learning a second language....and during a global pandemic when many social activities are cancelled. But finding out it's all worth the effort as exchange student friends are friends for life. - learning to speak German, and how important this was to her exchange experience. - experiencing her first ever white Christmas, including decorative biscuits and candles on the Christmas tree! - the importance of finding hobbies to help integrate into the community, find friends, and give purpose to her free time. Elisa joined the soccer and volleyball teams, started riding her bike every day, visited art museums and worked on a lot of her own art. We're blown away by how good Elisa's art is, and have included a couple of our favourites in the photos. - how hard it is to say goodbye at the end of exchange. Thank you Elisa for sharing your exchange with us, and we're so proud of the exchange student you've been, and how you've handled the challenges of regular exchange + pandemic exchange! We know the memories and friendships from your exchange year will last a lifetime. Thank you to Elisa's sponsor and host clubs, Rotary District 9640 and Rotary Youth Exchange Australia for making Elisa's exchange year possible As we sadly don't have any outbound students for 2021, we won't have any Instagram takeovers from current outbounders this year, but we'll be digging into the archives to bring you lots of highlights from our many 9640 rebounders.
09.01.2022 Members of the Bayside Covenant of Churches and Rotary Donations in Kind made a special delivery to our staff in the mental health unit last week. They dropped ...off 'gratitude bags' filled with self-care items, as a token of their appreciation for the work the mental health team do, and continue to do throughout the pandemic. Word spread in the Bayside community about the gratitude project, resulting in the creation of over 1800 bags for our staff and staff at other hospitals. A huge thank you to Rotary and their partnerships, for their ongoing kindness and support to our mental health unit and patients. See more

08.01.2022 ? For the very reasons noted in the attached article: Domestic violence reporting in Australia and ...the focus on the ‘good guy’. How you, the audience, can change it. https://ab.co/2Jej5yW Every Australian can help to change this story. Become a proactive bystander! Report any victim or possible victim of abuse to 000 or an appropriate support agency eg. 1800 RESPECT. Rotary SAFE Families is about PREVENTION of abuse. Report and find a referral agency. Talk about it, don’t just be an inactive bystander sitting on your hands, hoping the inevitable won’t happen! We have produced two films so far, plus a comprehensive referenced Manual and Toolkit. The films: Family Violence and its Impact on Children and Elder Abuse are readily available for you to use (see below). Rotary Australia is committed to make a difference to the horrific statistics that we read daily in our media. Do you remember the Traffic Accident Commission’s most famous slogan If You Drink, Then Drive, You're a Bloody Idiot, which was introduced in 1989? This slogan has become a catchphrase in Australia. The campaign has been highly successful in the quest to prevent drink driving accidents, albeit it has taken many years for us to respect the message about drink driving. When was the last time (if ever) you had a discussion about family abuse including elder abuse at your table? We need to talk about it. Yes, it will take time for the acceptance and respect that any form of abuse is Not the Norm! Rotary SAFE Families is about Stopping Abuse in Families Everywhere. SAFE Families is not about pushing the horrific stories of abuse; it is not a blame game but a change game and is focused on the ’: , Watch the films with their powerful messages around learning to recognise abuse, be informed and able to safely raise your concerns and then refer the victim or possible victim, to Police (if emergency) and/or an appropriate support agency in your neighbourhood. Or, talk to a support agency in your neighbourhood to ask their professional advice on locating support for a victim before she/he becomes a horrible statistic. Where to find these films, a contact person and detailed information? https://rotaryclubofmelbourne.org.au/rotarysafefamilies
08.01.2022 Happy World Kindness Day I love this story from Katharine Hepburn’s childhood. From the words of Katharine Hepburn ... Once when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was only one other family between us and the ticket counter. This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. The way they were dressed, you could tell they didn't have a lot of money, but their clothes were neat and clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly jabbering about the clowns, animals, and all the acts they would be seeing that night. By their excitement you could sense they had never been to the circus before. It would be a highlight of their lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband's hand, looking up at him as if to say, "You're my knight in shining armor." He was smiling and enjoying seeing his family happy. The ticket lady asked the man how many tickets he wanted? He proudly responded, "I'd like to buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets, so I can take my family to the circus." The ticket lady stated the price. The man's wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, the man's lip began to quiver. Then he leaned a little closer and asked, "How much did you say?" The ticket lady again stated the price. The man didn't have enough money. How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight kids that he didn't have enough money to take them to the circus? Seeing what was going on, my dad reached into his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill, and then dropped it on the ground. (We were not wealthy in any sense of the word!) My father bent down, picked up the $20 bill, tapped the man on the shoulder and said, "Excuse me, sir, this fell out of your pocket." The man understood what was going on. He wasn't begging for a handout but certainly appreciated the help in a desperate, heartbreaking and embarrassing situation. He looked straight into my dad's eyes, took my dad's hand in both of his, squeezed tightly onto the $20 bill, and with his lip quivering and a tear streaming down his cheek, he replied; "Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family." My father and I went back to our car and drove home. The $20 that my dad gave away is what we were going to buy our own tickets with. Although we didn't get to see the circus that night, we both felt a joy inside us that was far greater than seeing the circus could ever provide. That day I learnt the value to Give. The Giver is bigger than the Receiver. If you want to be large, larger than life, learn to Give. Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get - only with what you are expecting to give - which is everything. The importance of giving, blessing others can never be over emphasized because there's always joy in giving. Learn to make someone happy by acts of giving. ~ Katharine Hepburn Do something kind today for someone in our community Let’s make a kinder world.

04.01.2022 Rotary’s recently adopted diversity, equity and inclusion policy sends a strong message about embracing inclusivity. Rotary has clubs all over the world and rea...ches a broad range of people with our service projects. So, we are already diverse in a lot of ways, but a second ingredient, inclusion, is the key to unlocking and maintaining the full benefits of that diversity. How inclusive is your club? Verna Myers, founder of the Verna Myers Company and Vice President of Inclusion Strategy at Netflix, has explained the difference between the two concepts as: Diversity is being invited to the party, inclusion is being asked to dance. In the context of Rotary membership, this means it is not enough to invite people from diverse backgrounds to our meetings and events. We need to include them in club planning and decision making, and value their contributions. Katey Halliday, our Australian representative for Rotary International’s newly formed Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force and a member of both the Adelaide City Rotaract Club and Rotary Adelaide Light, offers some tips on making your club inclusive in the December/January edition of Rotary Down Under. Check out your copy in mailboxes and inboxes now!

02.01.2022 Rotary clubs in Australia and New Zealand have contributed to the largest-ever Rotary Foundation Grant to fund vital healthcare equipment on the world’s largest... purpose-built NGO hospital ship, operated by Mercy Ships. The ‘Global Mercy’ launches in 2021 and will double the NGO’s healthcare impact throughout West Africa by providing six surgical specialities, as well as training for local healthcare workers. Money donated by Craig Brodey, of Lane Cove Rotary, Rotary District 9685, together with contributions from New Zealand’s Rotary Club of Morrinsville - District 9930 Inc, Rotary District 9930 Central North Island New Zealand, forms part of the 2020 Rotary Foundation global grant of US$1.125 million, helping outfit six operating theatres, three infection isolation rooms, six wards, and an intensive care unit on board the Global Mercy. Worldwide, two out of three people could not access surgery when they need it pre-COVID-19. More than 18 million people were dying unnecessarily from conditions that could have been treated by surgery because they could not afford it, could not access it, or it was simply not available in their country at any time. In 2020 this need has escalated. During the 50-year lifespan of the ‘Global Mercy’, it is estimated more than 150,000 people will be transformed through free essential surgery. The addition of the new hospital ship will enable Mercy Ships to reach more people in need and train more local healthcare professionals, while leaving a sustainable, lasting healthcare legacy.
