18.01.2022 At our most recent meeting, local member for Mt Lawley Simon Millman MLA spoke about the different layers of Government and how each has been involved during the current pandemic. The executive, particularly from a Western Australian perspective In March, the Hon Fran Logan, Minister for Emergency Services, declared a State of Emergency due to the coronavirus. This allowed the Government to put guidelines in place to deal with the pandemic. Significant authority was delegated... to the Premier, The Commissioner of WA Police, Chief Medical Officer, Public Service Commissioner Sharyn ONeill, and Minister for Emergency Services. They were able to give clear instructions, with authority and promoted cooperation of the community The legislative response, relating to policies Due to quick action required to ensure the safety of everyone, around 17 acts needed to be updated very quickly. These included areas such as of Residential Tenancy, the Lotteries Commission and Treasurers Advance Authorisation. The acts needed to change quickly to ensure the state was acting in a proper and lawful way, so resources could be directed as needed. Simon observed the government and opposition collaborating effectively and expeditiously. Parliament as an entity. Simon advised that normally 59 members can be seated in the Legislative Assembly. However, due to social distancing, only 21 members were allowed in at one time. This meant that members had to sit in different positions to where they normally sat. Ministers were sitting in backbenches, Government members were sitting in opposition seats and so forth. Simon sensed that this developed a sense of collegiality. Standing orders, which have been used for around 130 years, were suspended. This was a monumental move. Thank you to Simon Millman for attending and providing us with these insights.

17.01.2022 This free program is being run on Sunday afternoon, starting on the 6th of September, is designed to offer children between the ages of 10-12 an opportunity to ...improve their mental health, make new friends & learn new skills. 17.01.2022 Let's normalise men seeking help for mental health issues. 72% of men do not seek help for mental disorders or mental health challenges. That's a VERY scary num...ber. Men's mental health is an area that is only recently getting the attention it needs and although the support programs for them have been in place for some time, there is still a bit of stigma attached to it. "She'll be right mate." doesn't work when it comes to mental health, for anyone, and making it ok to not be ok and to get help will go a long way to supporting men who are struggling. You can show your support by donating here - buff.ly/2w9iEPc #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthawareness #mensmentalhealth

15.01.2022 Time to bust another Rotary Myth. We are not JUST a community service organisation. We are SO SO SO much more!... Rotary gives members the chance to work on projects and have a real impact locally, nationally and internationally. Rotary has focus areas in Basic Education, Maternal & Infant Health, Peace & Conflict Resolution, Water Sanitation & Hygiene, Economic & Community Development, Disease Prevention and Supporting the Environment. So while we are proud to be built around local members in local clubs serving their communities with practical projects, Rotary is that and so much more. Thanks to Rotary Club of Morisset for the reminder :D

12.01.2022 Tonight we are having a meeting at 6.30 pm at the Mount Lawley Golf Club with District Governor Jon. The presentation is an interactive one and members are encouraged to bring along any necessary reading glasses and their mobile phones. We also look forward to the Caddy and Fluellen families joining us for a special presentation.

11.01.2022 Noel and Steve recently presented Asha from Specs Smart Optometrist in Gwelup with a certificate to say thank you for all the glasses they have donated to our glasses donation drive for Global Hand Charity. Global Hand Charitys mobile eye care camps have tested the eyesight of over 5 213 children and adults. The optometry team which included volunteers from private optometrists and staff and students from Melbourne University travelled across many villages in Laos and Sri ...Lanka. The charity has provided over 4000 free pairs of glasses to needy people in remote areas. The potential of this support is endless. The women can now weave their fabric, embroider their garments, and sort out the rice grains. The men can continue with their farming, fishing and perform tasks requiring adequate eyesight. Children can continue with their study and learning, without stumbling blocks and maximising their full potential in the community. A big thank you to all our club members who go around to the different optometrists to collect the glasses and of course another big thank you to the optometrists who donate glasses to the cause. If you would like to help with this project by teaming up with an optometrist in your area, please get in touch
