10.01.2022 This is the West End - Rottnest Island’s most western point. Full of rugged beauty, this rocky headland is one of the best spots for spotting native animals and sea life. Our tip: head to the Cathedral Rocks viewing platform for a chance to see a pod of dolphins or our resident colony of native New Zealand Fur Seals. by @jessicablaise (IG)

02.01.2022 Did you know the traditional name for Rottnest Island in the Noongar language is Wadjemup, which means ‘place of spirits’? The traditional owners, the Whadjuk Noongar People, have an enduring cultural and spiritual connection with the island. Up until 6,500 years ago, they walked this land and once the island was cut off from the mainland by rising sea-levels, Wadjemup continued to feature in significant Nyitting (Dreaming) stories and in songlines that reach throughout the s...tate and into the Northern Territory. The island is also a place of great significance to Aboriginal communities across Western Australia as the resting place of approximately 400 of the 4,000 men and boys known to have been imprisoned on the Island during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. This week, in recognition of NAIDOC week, we encourage you to take time to learn more about the cultural significance of Wadjemup: Visit the West End. This area is closely associated with Koorinup, which is said to connect this world and the next. A section of the Wadjemup Bidi trail which leads down to Cathedral Rocks tells the Nyitting (Dreamtime) story of Koorinup, through interpretive artwork and audio yarns. Visit the yarn bombing installation by the Kookaburra Club, located outside the Visitor Centre, or the photographic exhibition at Lomas Cottage. Check out the online exhibition at alwayswadjemup.com As part of Rottnest Island Authority’s partnership with the WA Museum Boola Bardip, two films from the exhibition will also be played on the big screen Yagan Square in Perth.
