25.01.2022 Being diagnosed with cancer can be a very isolating experience. Quite suddenly it feels like you have been removed from the normal ‘healthy’ section of society ...and set adrift into a complex, confusing world of appointments, scans and scary scenarios. In this strange new world, it can often feel like there is no hope and due to the trauma of the situation, it can be hard to connect with other patients in waiting rooms. Do they want to talk? Would they rather be left alone? Often it is better to stay silent. Well, not any more! For those that do want to talk and connect with other cancer patients there is now a weekly online cancer forum that aims to unite, empower and educate its participants. 25.01.2022 For the past 17 years i have made a living from helping clients with musculoskeletal pain, disfunction and range of motion restrictions. In my latter career I ...became a trainer and assessor and taught anatomy and physiology for two years in registered training organisations (RTO) sharing my industry experience and A&P knowledge as a educator/trainer and clinical assessor. No matter your experience or where you are at on your Massage & Myotherapy journey in healing arts I think it’s always good to refresh your learning and never forget any of your essential education in musculoskeletal anatomy. A chart at home in my opinion is always a good idea to have on hand for reference and continued education

22.01.2022 After what happened to George Floyd this week and the riots that are happening right now across the US, I've been wondering what to say and do with my outrage a...nd heartbreak. After reflecting on my thoughts, I always try to end these posts with some ways we can get involved - please feel free to do so ~ These cases also happen closer to home in Australia with indigenous people. One example is David Dungay Jnr, who died while being pinned down by five police officers in December 2015. In CCTV footage, Mr Dungay also said "I can’t breathe" multiple times. While it didn't make headlines across the world, the cases are similar and so is the dark underbelly of institutional racism. While I can't speak of others' rage and grief, I can only share mine. The heart of this feels like a profound crisis of empathy. The image of his killer having his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck for 8 minutes and 48 seconds, almost 3 minutes after Mr. Floyd had lost consciousness, is a harrowing portrait of racism and murder. I keep wanting to close my eyes when I imagine that picture but I can't look away from this. The fact that only one of his killers have been charged with third degree murder shows that the Intent of the killer's actions is being questioned. The other men have not been charged. The subtext here is: he didn't intend it. They didn't mean it. The subtext here is: let's devalue police brutality and murder. The subtext here is: let's normalise racism. Floyd told his killers he couldn't breathe 12 times. They kept going. That is intent. He said I’m about to die they’re gonna kill me, and called out for his mother. They kept going. That is intent. Witnesses asked his killer to check his pulse 16 times because they feared he was dying. There's video footage where his killer kept his knee and blocked George's airway until George stopped breathing. He kept going for 9 minutes to make sure that George really, truly died. That is intent. None of the four men attempted CPR, took George's pulse or tried to save his life. That is intent. Every action and choice intentionally caused and led to Mr. Floyd's death. Still, the Minneapolis police department is asking: did he intend it? Did the others? Yes. Repeatedly. Repeatedly. This level of indifference towards police murder is wrong at best, and criminal at worst. The story being told repeatedly is that in the wake of an obviously violent police murder, millions of people need to express despair for there to be minimal consequences. This dishonours the basic ethos of the rule of law. It is, as I mentioned before, also a profound crisis of empathy. And then, the world was told that US military would shoot US citizens on US soil to deal with protestors.... YOU GUYS. Do not be distracted by this message of provocation. This will not lead to justice for George Floyd, or anyone else for that matter. It's the go-ahead for people to continue the cycle of violence. Journalists are being teargassed at point blank range. Certain states have shut down testing for coronavirus due to the riots. This provocation distracts from the failed leadership in responding to the global pandemic where 40 million people are left unemployed and over 100,000 people are reported dead. Today's image is more like a torn page of a dystopian novel than a humane way to act in the 21st Century. Just an urgent reminder to my American friends while I'm here: VOTE. Institutional racism is as shameful as it is unacceptable. It is a dark chokehold on our progress as human beings. It is time to ask ourselves: WHO ARE WE REALLY? If there's ever a time to ask this question, it's now. Knee deep in 2020, looking ahead into the future of our species. We need an inner overhaul of the thinking and beliefs that has led to the ingrained, systemic racism that George and so many others experienced. More than ever before we need to do our own work to become loving, empathetic individuals and lead our lives in a way that encourages others to do the same. WHAT CAN WE DO? PS. Not everyone will be comfortable taking specific types of action. Ask if and how you want to help. 1. SPEAK UP. George lost his life as he lost his voice. We still have ours. If it's sharing a post, writing your own, signing petitions - in the way that feels right for you, use your voice :) 2. DONATE. Those looking to financially contribute to improving services to the community can donate funds or supplies to Reclaim the Block. https://www.reclaimtheblock.org/. In Australia, you can advocate for indigenous lives. Donate to the Healing Foundation here: https://healingfoundation.org.au/donate/ and the Kinchela Boys Home here: https://kinchelaboyshome.org.au/ 3. ADVOCATE. There are people who fight for justice in the legal system every day who need help. Volunteer for local organisations who manage these cases or mobilise support for them. Ask the ACLU and NAACP how you can help. You can also consider supporting your local Black Lives Matter community. Closer to home in Australia, you can reach out to ALS or ANTAR. 4. VOTE. Yep. 5. HEAL, LOVE and SERVE. Keep learning more on this. Keep checking your own biases. Heal your wounds. Do your inner and outer work. Serve and love those who need you. I myself will continue work with leaders to catalyse change. I'll reach out to my network, have conversations with thinkers who are working in this area, blazing trails in the #blacklivesmatter movement and also with indigenous elders to LISTEN more about what the victims, communities and protestors want moving forward. Rest in power and rest in peace, George. May we honour your life by dedicating our own to love and justice. Until our last breath. <3 xxx

20.01.2022 A SILENT TRAGEDY There is a silent tragedy that is unfolding today in our homes, and concerns our most precious jewels: our children. Our children are in a deva...stating emotional state! In the last 15 years, researchers have given us increasingly alarming statistics on a sharp and steady increase in childhood mental illness that is now reaching epidemic proportions: Statistics do not lie: 1 in 5 children have mental health problems A 43% increase in ADHD has been noted A 37% increase in adolescent depression has been noted There has been a 200% increase in the suicide rate in children aged 10 to 14 What is happening and what are we doing wrong? Today's children are being over-stimulated and over-gifted with material objects, but they are deprived of the fundamentals of a healthy childhood, such as: Emotionally available parents Clearly defined limits Responsibilities Balanced nutrition and adequate sleep Movement in general but especially OUTDOORS Creative play, social interaction, unstructured game opportunities and boredom spaces Instead, in recent years, children have been filled with: Digitally distracted parents Indulgent and permissive parents who let children "rule the world" and whoever sets the rules A sense of right, of deserving everything without earning it or being responsible for obtaining it Inadequate sleep and unbalanced nutrition A sedentary lifestyle Endless stimulation, technological nannies, instant gratification and absence of boring moments What to do? If we want our children to be happy and healthy individuals, we have to wake up and get back to basics. It is still possible! Many families see immediate improvements after weeks of implementing the following recommendations: Set limits and remember that you are the captain of the ship. Your children will feel more confident knowing that you have control of the helm. Offer children a balanced lifestyle full of what children NEED, not just what they WANT. Don't be afraid to say "no" to your children if what they want is not what they need. Provide nutritious food and limit junk food. Spend at least one hour a day outdoors doing activities such as: cycling, walking, fishing, bird / insect watching Enjoy a daily family dinner without smartphones or distracting technology. Play board games as a family or if children are very small for board games, get carried away by their interests and allow them to rule in the game Involve your children in some homework or household chores according to their age (folding clothes, ordering toys, hanging clothes, unpacking food, setting the table, feeding the dog etc.) Implement a consistent sleep routine to ensure your child gets enough sleep. The schedules will be even more important for school-age children. Teach responsibility and independence. Do not overprotect them against all frustration or mistakes. Misunderstanding will help them build resilience and learn to overcome life's challenges, Do not carry your children's backpack, do not carry their backpacks, do not carry the homework they forgot, do not peel bananas or peel oranges if they can do it on their own (4-5 years). Instead of giving them the fish, teach them to fish. Teach them to wait and delay gratification. Provide opportunities for "boredom", since boredom is the moment when creativity awakens. Do not feel responsible for always keeping children entertained. Do not use technology as a cure for boredom, nor offer it at the first second of inactivity. Avoid using technology during meals, in cars, restaurants, shopping centers. Use these moments as opportunities to socialize by training the brains to know how to work when they are in mode: "boredom" Help them create a "bottle of boredom" with activity ideas for when they are bored. Be emotionally available to connect with children and teach them self-regulation and social skills: Turn off the phones at night when children have to go to bed to avoid digital distraction. Become a regulator or emotional trainer for your children. Teach them to recognize and manage their own frustrations and anger. Teach them to greet, to take turns, to share without running out of anything, to say thank you and please, to acknowledge the error and apologize (do not force them), be a model of all those values you instill. Connect emotionally - smile, hug, kiss, tickle, read, dance, jump, play or crawl with them. Article written by Victoria Prooday https://yourot.com//2017/5/24/what-are-we-doing-to-our-chi

03.01.2022 Hands up if you were taught this growing up? This is one of the biggest misconceptions I find amongst my clients when it comes to nutrition, along wit...h the notion that 'carbs make you fat'. However...this image actually isn't completely incorrect, it just needs little teaking. Did you know that your brain and body can ONLY use carbohydrates as an energy source, making them essential for optimal daily function. The trick is choosing the 'best' sources of carbos. 50-60% of you total daily food intake should come from complex, low GI carbohydrates. Furthermore, 80% of that should come from vegies! To learn more about food and nutrition and how to increase your energy and performance, and best support your body, training and overall health, come along to my upcoming Health Mastery Introduction. One whole day of nutrition, exercise and mindset transformation. Saturday 31st July. Check out the link below for more info. https://fb.me/e/6fT2TrHQx?ti=cl In the mean time check out my best choices for low GI, complex carbs to fuel your mind and body. All vegies, and yes even potatoes. Fibrous fruits, with the skin on. Whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, barley, buckwheat, amaranth and oats. Raw nuts and seeds. Beans, pulses and legumes. Rice and edamame pasta. Whole grain, seed breads.
