24.01.2022 The Department of Defence celebrate NAIDOC Week annually in July to recognise and celebrate the history, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Stra...it Islander peoples. This year, the National NAIDOC Committee postponed the national celebrations in response to COVID-19 to 8-15 November. The NAIDOC Week theme for 2020 is 'Always Was, Always Will Be'. This theme recognises that Indigenous Australians have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years, and continue to do so. The 2020 National NAIDOC Poster, Shape of Land, was designed by Tyrown Waigana, a proud Noongar and Saibai Islander, has previously been named as one of WA’s best new and emerging Indigenous artists. Tyrown’s artwork tells the story of how the Rainbow Serpent came out of the Dreamtime to create this land. It is represented by the snake and it forms the shape of Australia, which symbolises how it created our lands. The colour from the Rainbow Serpent is reflected on to the figure to display our connection to the Rainbow Serpent, thus our connection to country. The overlapping colours on the outside is the Dreamtime. The figure inside the shape of Australia is a representation of Indigenous Australians showing that this country - since the dawn of time - Always Was, Always Will Be Aboriginal Land. 19.01.2022 Royal Australian Navy Band musicians were major players at this year's ADF ARRTS program, along with colleagues from Australian Army Band and Air Force Band. ARRTS (Arts for Recovery, Resilience, Teamwork and Skills) is a four-week program held at the University of Canberra’s Inspire Centre that supports personnel affected by physical and/or mental injury. The healing power of music is widely known and participants were mentored and encouraged by the musicians in learning to ...play new instruments, as well as developing their vocal talents. This helped them rebuild their confidence and experience the exhilaration of performing in front of family and friends in a spectacular showcase concert on November 26, which was streamed to families over the Internet. The next ADF ARRTS program will be held in May 2021. Shown after the concert (L-R) are: Leading Seaman Sam Sheppard (keyboards), Private Liz Cherry (vocals), Able Seaman Chris Thompson (drums), Able Seaman Winston Weng (bass), and Corporal Lee Webb (guitar). #ServinginHarmony #NavyBand #RANBand #AusNavy #YourADF #ProudToServe #OurPeople #OurCommunity #PowerOfMusic #Capability Defence Force School of Music Defence Australia

18.01.2022 #MusicianMonday this week features the RAN Band Sydney Bandmaster, Chief Petty Officer Grant Metcalfe. In a career spanning over 20 years, CPO Metcalfe's contribution to the band has been considerable! This week, in his role as Drum Major, Chief Metcalfe will march out the band at HMAS Creswell Royal Australian Naval College in support of #NEOC63 pass out celebrations. "Since joining in 1999, I have experienced a fantastic career as a musician in the Royal Australian Navy. ...I am a saxophonist and woodwind player by trade and have an interest in jazz improvisation, performance and music arranging. A 21 year career has encompassed everything from performing at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, overseas, for the 60th Anniversary of the Battle of Greece and Crete in 2001, to operational deployments in Iraq. In 2004, I participated in the Anzac Exchange program - an exciting three month posting with The Royal New Zealand Navy Band. In 2007 I deployed on HMAS Sydney IV with an RAN Band contingent for her assignment to the west coast of the United States and Canada. 2009 presented the opportunity for me to lead a technical production team on Tour De Force Timor Leste 16. The RAN Band has given me incredible studio recording opportunities through the recording of CD’s for wind band, jazz ensembles and big bands. The band has also been featured live- to- air on a number of ABC broadcasts and recordings". To listen to CPO Metcalfe featuring as part of the #AOBB check out; https://bit.ly/AOBB-Compositions and https://bit.ly/AOBB-StraightAhead "Other memorable events include participation in the ADF Marching Band for The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2012 in Scotland and performing at the 2014 ANZAC Service in Turkey. The performance opportunities provided through being a Navy Musician is too long to list fully! From 2012 I was posted as an instructor to the Defence Force School of Music which provided an amazing opportunity to collaborate with and learn from expert civilian and Defence music educators from both Australia and overseas. The RAN has also provided opportunity for supported part time external study. In 2005 I enrolled as a student at the University of New England, AU and graduated with a Bachelor Music/ Bachelor of Teaching in February 2011. A posting and promotion was offered in 2018 and I moved to Adelaide, taking up the position of Bandmaster of the reserve RAN Band SA. Following an exciting 2 years I was offered the opportunity to return to Sydney as Bandmaster RAN Band Sydney, a position I currently hold". 17.01.2022 Its #MusicianMonday again and we are excited to feature our first RAN Band Queensland member, LSMUSN Gemma Tilly! I am Leading Seaman Musician Gemma Tilly from the Royal Australian Navy Band Queensland. I play trombone and sing across the various styles of jazz, swing, rock and pop. I heard about the Navy Band through a friend and duet singing partner. Her father was in the Navy so we started getting experience with the band whilst in high school. It was a great bunch of peo...ple and the exposure to a big band was fantastic so I joined as soon as I turned 17 and 9 months. I was lucky enough to get a transfer to RAN Band QLD when I moved to Brisbane for university. Since then the band has been a big part of my life I finished uni, pursued a career in human resources, lived in America, married, had two kids, and moved to the Gold coast. The reserves have been flexible enough to work around my hectic life and changes for the last 17 years! The job has taken me to all over Australia to some of the most picturesque places (Navy bases always offer waterfront views)! Ive also been lucky enough to to perform the Anzac Day Dawn Ceremony at ANZAC Cove in Gallipoli. Other highlights have been performing the Australian National Anthem at Suncorp Stadium, working with all my colleagues Australia wide for the International Fleet Review 2013, and performing at the The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Sydney. I am always amazed at the experiences that the Navy has given me. There have been many occasions where I pinch myself and wonder how I got to be at the most stunning, random, unique or life-changing gigs. There arent many people that get to swing on stage with a full big band! Since picking up a boarding house of 70 kids when I married my husband, having two kids myself and moving an hour away from base Ive found it more challenging to balance the balls. However, I am lucky to have a really adaptable multi-skilled colleagues who always manage to cover for me should I not be able to do a gig. A few years ago I was asked to speak as a Navy representative as a International Womens Day Breakfast. I told the room of young women - there are so many opportunities in the Navy, so many of them you wont even know about until join, youll never know where youll end up or where it will take you. That to me is the most exciting part. To keep up-to-date with RAN Band QLD, follow us on FB, and to find out more about the band, check out: www.navy.gov.au/about/organisation/navy-band/queensland #ServinginHarmony #NavyBand #AusNavy #ProudtoServe #YourADF #RANReserve #OurStory #OurPeople #MilitaryBand #MilitaryMusic #Ceremonial

16.01.2022 HMAS Cerberus is nicknamed ‘Cradle of the Navy’ and since its official opening 100 years ago, the establishment has provided basic training courses for Navy’s newest Sailors at the Royal Australian Navy Recruit School. Hundreds of RAN Band members have passed through the Cerberus gates to commence their Navy career at Recruit School, and our newest member ABMUSN Matthew Hurditch is no different. Ordinarily, Musician trainees then go on to complete the Musician Initial Entry ...Training (MIET) course at the Defence Force School of Music (DFSM), Simpson Barracks. However, AB Hurditch, along with other recent joiners, has attended the MIET course via distance learning whilst remaining in situ at HMAS Cerberus. Whilst on course trainees are instructed by DFSM staff and Navy Band mentors in specific military band training components such as marching band drill and techniques, military side drumming, ensemble performance, music theory and other unique tenants of military music life. The course forms the basis for learning that continues throughout a Navy Musician’s career. AB Hurditch said I enjoyed getting back to playing after Recruit School training and learning new skills, such as parade drumming. It has also been an opportunity to refresh some of the music theory knowledge from prior studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, The University of Sydney". "I am really looking forward to playing with a professional wind band again", AB Hurditch explained, (after not having done so for seven months). He brings a wealth of performance experience to the Navy Band, having worked with the Corrective Services NSW Band and the NSW Police Band. AB Hurditch joined RAN Band Sydney this week! The band wishes him a warm welcome, congratulations on completing the MIET course and all the very best with his first posting! #ServinginHarmony #NavyBand #AusNavy #MilitaryBand #MilitaryMusic #OurPeople #ProudtoServe #Euphonium #BrassSection #OurStory #Capability

12.01.2022 Its time for another #MusicianMonday and today we are featuring LSMUSN Julian Foord! My name is Julian Foord and I am a Leading Seaman Musician in the Royal Australian Navy Band. I am a pianist in the RAN Band Melbourne based at HMAS Cerberus. I have been in the band for eight years, the first two in Sydney and the rest here in Melbourne. After completing a Bachelors degree in music performance at Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), I worked as a piano tu...tor and freelance musician where I toured around Australia and overseas. I had very little knowledge of military bands until a friend joined and told me what they were all about. The appeal of a salary-based income and the opportunity to play a variety of music styles was enough to convince me to join. Fortunately a position soon became available and I successfully auditioned. As a jazz specialist, I am most at home in our big band and smaller jazz ensemble, but I also play in our wind and rock bands. On parade I am a member of the drum corps or sometimes play the bell lyre. Ive relished the challenge of learning new instruments and having various ensembles on hand to write and arrange for, as performing my original compositions was not something I thought Id be able to do in this band. After being promoted to Leading Seaman, I became the Work Health & Safety (WHS) Representative for our unit. As part of our bands safety team, I am one of the people responsible for ensuring our work practices are safe and compliant with all regulations and legislation. I am a member of the Navy Football Association. By football I mean the true football which you may know as Soccer. We run training camps and participate in various civilian and Inter-Service competitions. Last year I spent some time at sea onboard HMAS Choules as part of Extended Regional Engagement-South West Pacific (ERE-SWP). Our mission was to improve relations with our Southwest-Pacific neighbours and the band was a key part of this, performing in various ports and functions onboard the ship. It was difficult being away from my family for an extended period of time, but it was an invaluable learning experience and opportunity to directly see how my role fits in with the broader Navy. (Check out LS Foord performing in Samoa as part of ERE-SWP here: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=880601555653300) As well as touring all over Australia, I have also been fortunate enough to perform internationally in China and at the Villers-Bretonneux Anzac Day service in France. I enjoy the camaraderie, tradition and non-standard working hours that this job offers. The high calibre of musicians that I get to work with and variety of performance opportunities inspire me to be the best musician I can be! #ServinginHarmony #NavyBand #AUSNavy #YouADF #ProudtoServe #MilitaryBand #MilitaryMusic #OurPeople #TYFYS #Piano #Pianist #Jazz Royal Australian Navy

10.01.2022 #MusicianMonday week four features a stalwart member of the RAN Band and 2019 Kirsty Jones Award recipient ABMUSN Chris Thompson! My name is Christopher Thompson. Im a percussionist/drummer in the Royal Australian Navy Band Sydney and Ive been in the Navy for 15 years. My main roles are military side drummer on parade, percussionist in the wind band and drummer in the rock band - Sea State Seven. I first joined the Navy Band way back in 1988 after seeing the band perform... in my home town of Cowra, New South Wales, Australia. After talking to a number of the musicians after the performance, I was convinced it would be a great way of life. The following year I auditioned and was accepted. After my recruit training I spent 12 months at the Defence Force School of Music, then 3 years in RAN Band Melbourne at HMAS Cerberus, followed by 2 years posted to RAN Band Sydney. After my initial 6 year contract I decided to leave the Navy and pursue my musical aspirations outside which I did for 12 years. For 10 of those years I was a member of Enormous Horns - one of Australias hardest working show bands. It was an invaluable experience as a musician/drummer playing 5 to 7 nights a week and touring Australia and the world. One of the best parts about playing in the Navy Band and the Navy in general are the friendships you make. Even though it had been 12 years, I still had regular contact with friends I made in the band. One of those friends mentioned that the Navy Band was looking for a drummer mainly for the Rock Band. After much consideration I left the Enormous Horns, re-joining the Navy Band in 2005, and havent looked back since. Ive been involved in 3 major sea deployments which have taken me all over the world. While very challenging at times for a musician, it was extremely rewarding playing to people of all walks of life. Music really is the universal language. Ive had a long career as a military musician and Im extremely proud to wear the uniform and extremely proud of what we accomplish as military musicians. #ServinginHarmony #NavyBand #AusNavy #ProudtoServe #YourADF #OurPeople #Drummer #Drums #Percussion #PercussionSection #MilitarySideDrum #Capability #MilitaryBand #MilitaryMusic

05.01.2022 #FlashbackFriday!! This morning we are flashing back all the way to yesterday afternoon! The RAN Band congratulates Sub-Lieutenant Claire Ham on her commission and successful transfer to Training Systems Officer! Claire is the second band member in as many months to navigate such a career change!... Claire joined the Royal Australian Navy as part of GE138 in February 1997. She posted to RAN Band Sydney, where she remained for the duration of her full time career, performing on flute, piccolo and vocals. Highlights include supporting HMAS Torrens for her final operational deployment, and performing at the Sydney Olympic and Paralympic Games. Claire discharged in 2001 and spent the next 14 years teaching and performing, as well as selling flutes and raising children. Claire returned to Recruit School in 2015 and re-qualified as a Reserve Musician. While based in Hobart, she worked with the Navy Community Engagement Cell and eventually became the regional coordinator for Tasmania. Concurrently she served as a Careers Coach at Defence Force Recruiting, and continued her Musician role with RAN Band Tasmania. Upon her husbands posting to Sydney, Claire continued to work as a Careers Coach at Defence Force Recruiting Sydney. It was while working here that she was motivated to apply for the role of Training Systems Officer, successfully passing her Officer Selection Board in May 2019. During the first half of 2020, Claire transitioned to full-time member and completed sponsored university study in order to qualify for the Training Systems role. Claire has always maintained that being part of the Navy Band has been "the best job in the world". While she sad to be leaving the organisation, she has no regrets, and is excited to be focusing her efforts on developing Navys capability. Now commissioned, Claire will commence the New Entry Officers Course - #neoc63 at HMAS Creswell Royal Australian Naval College. 02.01.2022 This week #MusicianMonday features the first member from Royal Australian Navy Band Western Australia - LSMUSN Tiana Horlock! The reserve band in Perth are a fantastic and committed team who, directed by only two full-time Musicians, support HMAS Stirling, Fleet Base West, Royal Australian Air Force Base Pearce and the wider state, in addition to their civilian jobs! My name is Tiana Horlock. I am a Leading Seaman Musician with the RAN Band WA. I learned about the RAN Band t...hrough my time with the Australian Navy Cadets. I spent my entire adolescence as a cadet and had many great experiences through the organisation. Part of that was doing work experience with the band as a side drummer. We performed many ceremonial sunsets and marching displays and the experience had me hooked. In 2010, when the time was right for me, I joined the Navy Band as a Reservist. When I joined I was primarily a side-drummer, but I also played the piano. I spent the early years of my service developing my skills in the different styles the band played with the support of mentors with many years experience. This experience served me well when a series of retirements led to me being the sole pianist for the band. It was at this time that we also had a reduction in vocalists so I was given the opportunity to perform as a backing vocalist. I love playing and singing at the same time so, while it was challenging, I really enjoyed it! It also led me to become part of a smaller ensemble within the RAN Band WA, which focused on contemporary music. With new members now joining the band, and my recent promotion to Leading Seaman, my position in the band has taken on a new direction. I now have the opportunity to mentor junior members of the band in both keyboard and side drum, whilst also drawing from their musical experience. I chose to be a Reserve Musician as it offered balance between my civilian life and music. When I joined I was working full time in administration and playing music was a hobby. The band offered me a place to play music while allowing me to continue my other chosen work. In time, the members of the band became my family and social group and they continue to be my support network of friends. Now I am married with two small children, and I am still able to offer my service to the band. I still get to enjoy playing music and watching and being a part of the changes that time brings. At this moment in my life, the best part by far is watching my children embrace the music and sense of pride that my being in the RAN Band WA has brought into our home.
