Just $53 could buy antibiotics for a sick dog/cat this week to help them on the road to recovery or $200 will keep an Inspector on the road for a day, so they can continue fighting animal cruelty. 21.01.2022 New Year’s Eve might be an exciting time for us humans (seriously, who isn’t looking forward to leaving 2020 behind?!) But the celebrations can be scary for pets With fireworks set to go off in many places around the country tonight, keep these tips in mind and follow the link below for even more information: Keep your pets inside where possible with windows and blinds closed to reduce the noise. If pets really cannot come inside, ensure your yard is very secure. A f...rightened animal may jump the fence or dig their way out. Don’t leave your animal tethered they can choke themselves if excited or spooked. Stay calm and have games and toys on hand as a distraction. Feed your pet and give them plenty of exercise beforehand so they’re tired and content before any celebrations begin. Make sure your pet is easily identifiable through ID tags and updated contact details on their microchip. 20.01.2022 Organised Crime Squad detectives, together with RSPCA NSW Inspectors, have dismantled an illegal cockfighting syndicate and seized 71 fighting cockerels, follo...wing a joint investigation into animal cruelty offences. Earlier this year, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Organised Crime Squad, together with the NSW Crime Commission and RSPCA NSW, commenced inquiries following reports of animal cruelty offences in Sydney’s south-west. Following extensive investigations, detectives executed a search warrant at a property at Camden Valley Way at Catherine Field, from 11am yesterday (Sunday 13 December 2020). Detectives were assisted throughout the operation by RSPCA NSW Inspectors, Bass Hill Region Enforcement Squad (RES), South West Metropolitan Operations Support Group (OSG), the Dog Unit and PolAir. During a search of the property, officers uncovered a designated cockfighting area and several large sheds used to house 71 fighting cockerels, as well as metal spikes, spurs and other cockfighting paraphernalia. Officers also seized $107,170 cash and several electronic devices from the premises, which will undergo further examination. The animals were seized by RSPCA NSW Inspectors, several of which were taken into veterinary care for serious injuries. Thirty-five men were detained at the property and spoken to by police. Investigations by Organised Crime Squad detectives are continuing and charges relating to animal cruelty offences and proceeds of crime are expected to be laid. A 35-year-old Heckenberg man was charged with contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO (domestic). He was refused bail to appear at Picton Local Court today (Monday 14 December 2020). A 28-year-old Cabramatta man was charged with possess prohibited drug and knowingly produce false/misleading document. He is due to appear at Picton Local Court tomorrow (Tuesday 15 December 2020). Investigators are working with the Department of Home Affairs regarding the visa status of a 56-year-old man. Inquiries continue. Anyone with information about animal cruelty offences is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.
17.01.2022 It may seem obvious that whips hurt horses but this research, which shows that humans and horses have a similar capacity to feel pain, is such an important step in ending the use of the whip in Australia.
17.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS: A world-first study published today shows that if whips hurt us, they hurt horses. The evidence is building to end the use of the whip in horse racing. We’ve just learned that whips don’t affect the conduct of a race, don’t make races safer and don’t make horses faster. Now we know that the whip is also unacceptable. Read more: bit.ly/IfWhipsHurtUs

06.01.2022 With the Australian summer in full swing, so are our slithery scaley native creatures! Here are some tips to keep your pets safe from encounters with snakes this summer: KEEP THINGS TIDY Snakes are attracted to possible food and water sources (e.g. your pets bowls) as well as safe, quiet places to hide. To reduce the risk of snakes finding your backyard or property attractive, keep the grass low, clean up any rubbish piles and clear away objects where snakes may be able t...o hide. WATCH OUT FOR LONG GRASS Is there anything better than having a lovely walk with your furry best friend? It’s good to be cautious about walking in bushland, especially areas where it’s hard to see the ground. Keep your dog on a lead in these areas to avoid them running off and coming in contact with a snake! ARE YOU SURE IT’S A SNAKE? It could also be our resident blue-tongued lizard. They are entirely harmless but can look like a snake. Just in case, it’s a good idea to keep your distance and make sure pets are kept away. Discarded masks are having a terrible impact on animals Although you might think you’re doing the right thing by responsibly disposing of used masks in the bin there's one more simple step you need to take to ensure your discarded mask doesn't injure or kill an animal cut the ear loops For more information on how the pandemic is affecting animal welfare, visit our RSPCA Knowledgebase and search 'COVID-19' kb.rspca.org.au/article-tags/covid
